This Remembrance Sunday, 100 years on from November 11th 1918, we remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Rye Cricket Club has cause to remember a player who made the ultimate sacrifice, but one tinged with extraordinary sadness and irony.
On September 17th 1917 at Paschendale, Sergeant Bill Pepper, aged 42, of the Notts and Derbyshire, Sherwood Foresters Regiment, was killed by a shell. He was buried at La Clytte Military Cemetery. He had enlisted in 1914, and was... part of the first wave of troops to travel to France at the start of the First World War in 1914.
Charles Pepper’s connection to Rye Cricket Club was formed in 1895. At the age of 18, he was an outstanding young cricketer. The famous England Cricketer, Arthur Shrewsbury, provided a link to Rye Cricket Club’s President, Lord Sheffield, through their joint activities running celebrity cricket matches, which included W.G. Grace, and a tour to Australia which led to Australia’s premier cricket Tournament, The Sheffield Shield.
In the 1895 and 1896 seasons as Rye’s Professional, Charles Pepper made an immediate impact, taking 100 wickets with his leg spin and scoring 506 runs in 1896. At the end of season AGM, the Chairman Reginald Blomfield proposed the health of Charles Pepper, saying, “They could have not have had a better, for he was an excellent cricketer, and a first rate sportsman…..and he had been cheerful and hardworking.”
In the following seasons Charles Pepper played for Nottinghamshire CCC, Bedfordshire, and club sides in Brechin, Darlington, Kendall and Burton. He also played football for Notts County.
The story of Charles Pepper has great poignancy, because he lies in a grave near Ypres, the headstone of which, and the Cross of Sacrifice marking the cemetery, were both designed by Reginald Blomfield, the Rye Cricket Club Chairman, who 20 years earlier had praised Charles Pepper as a Rye cricketer.

What a wonderful place could have spent more than 2 nights but hubby has to work. Glennn with three ‘N’ s was a joy and Kitkat lovely they all try to go the extra mile to make your stay wonderful. We stayed in room 10 but saw no ghosts however we did get to view the secret passages and bolt holes plus the cellar. Will definitely try to go back in the future.

What a great place to stay! Warm, welcoming staff and good food and accommodation. Rye is a great place to visit abd The Mermaid Inn is where you should stay.

User

Very old and quirky and charming I love this place. This is our 3rd time here and had a lovely time. The staff all professional, the rooms fantastic and the food was great. The only criticism I have is that when making the booking I mentioned we had been here before and it was our anniversary but no comments where made to us. Please read your customer comments it would have made us feel you care.

User

This is the second time we have stayed here, the first time in room 25 with a lovely 4 poster bed but only one night, this time 2 nights in room 35. Lovely place with plenty of history. We had a meal in the restaurant both times and both times it was excellent food and well presented.

Haunted inn, maybe, our kettle turned itself on in the middle of the night the first stay, nothing the second stay. My husband does not believe, I would have loved to prove him wrong, he still thinks the kettle was fixed!!!

User

This is the second time my husband and myself have dined in the mermaid inn when we have visited Rye. We have also used the bar on other occasions. The atmosphere is fantastic and the history is literally written and painted on the walls! So much to look at while your wining and dining! The staff are pleasant and can't do enough for you. We were made very welcome and the service was excellent. The food has a twist to it making it more exciting and fun. Quality of the food is excellent to using locally sourced produce when available.

The only thing we havent done is stay. We promise that will be on the agenda in the near future.

User

The Mermaid is full of history and beautiful inside and out. I had The Fish Finger Sandwich with a side of Corriander Coleslaw couldn't fault any of it and the Staff were very friendly and nice. Will definitely be back when were in the area again.

User

Loved this place! The staff were welcoming and happy to take us on little tours to see the cellar and the priest holes! Spooky and magnificent! Room 16 is spectacular!

User

Literally just Walked the door from 4 days here. Absolutely loved the room and all the staff! Enough couldn't believe done for me in their eyes, making me feel at home throughout my stay. Stayed at a much bigger and far fancier place than this last year...this beats the mansion hands down. Rebooked for January, keep up the awesome work guys and thank you so much for such an awesome stay at your beautiful and historic inn!

User

Just spent two nights at this lovely quirky old hotel, the room was spacious and comfortable and surposingly haunted, what love to. On my way

What a lovely quirky old hotel we have just spent two nights here, the room was spacious and comfortable and we were told it was haunted, would love to come back again.

User

I booked to stay at the Mermaid for my birthday wth my family and I wasn’t disappointed. Check in was seamless, the staff were friendly, our rooms were quirky and comfortable and the hotel was a haven of history and information, just remember to duck through doorways if your reasonably tall!!!! We went out for dinner but used the bar during the afternoon sitting in the sunshine on the patio, service was good and the area very pleasant. A wonderful stay overall right down to breakfast and check out the next morning. We will definitely be back....thank you to all at The Mermaid for making my birthday special 👍

User

Great food, staff very friendly and accommodating, wife and I do don’t drink and the waiter serving us said he would make us a non alcoholic cocktail and asked my wife what type of flavours she liked. Really thoughtful. Decor is very historic and the warm fireplaces make it feel really cosy and welcoming.

User

Fascinating place with very helpful and friendly staff, good service and unique rooms with comfortable beds.

User

Fantastic stay in room 1. Elizabeth on reception was exceptionally helpful and friendly. All the other staff helped made our stay extra special including Glenn and his singing.

User

Fabulous day in Rye..We had an excellent lunch in the Mermaid Inn, Glen was a first class host and guide and he went over and above the call of duty to make our day one of the best .. thank you Glen .

User

Absolutely delightful stay, but sadly just the one night. Overflowing with stories, history and several ghosts. Even Shakespeare and his theatre troupe 'The Chamberlain's Men' put on a performance of 'A Midsummer Nights Dream' back in 1597. Lovely food, extremely helpful staff. I'll be back!

User

Absolute gem of a quaint, quirky, steeped in history hotel. Birthday treat for my fiancé and the fantastic staff kept it a secret for me even with the surprise guests all turned up at once. Food was amazing, room beautiful and spotless. Staff couldn’t have been more welcoming and friendly, especially Glenn and Sam. One of the best experiences in a hotel stay. Would highly recommend a stay here at the Mermaid Inn.

User

Lovely old hotel feels so relaxing like going back in time - We had very noisy people in the room above the hotel is very old and creaky as you would expect so it was a shame that they didn't consider the people below when stomping about and being loud until 2am then again at 3.30am. Please offer a Vegan breakfast we were disapointed as there wasnt one although we were told there would be and when we checked in that catering was aware. We felt quite excluded and disapointed if I am to give totally honest feedback which is the only real letdown in this otherwise perfect Hotel but obviously breakfast is a very big part of the experience when booking bed and breakfast.

User

Wonderful hotel, steeped in smuggler history. Lovely 4 poster room with creaky floorboards and diamond paned Windows. Dinner last night was perfection, sharing platter of steak, mushrooms, sauce, salad and rosemary fries with champagne. Very friendly and helpful staff, couldn’t recommend this place enough!

Come for the history, the quirks and quaintness. Town of Rye is lovely too.

User

Small single room low doors & only small bath with mixer tap. I am tall so not the ideal combination / stall polite & went out of their way to provide an early breakfast @ 7am which should be standard anyway. Will not stay again unless I can guarantee luxury 👍🏻
