About The Navigation, Thrupp Wharf

Overlooking the Grand Union Canal The Navigation is our modern interpretation of an original public house serving food daily from 8am.

The Navigation, Thrupp Wharf Description

The Navigation is aptly named, as we sit right on the Grand Union Canal, which points the way to London from the Midlands.

Things have changed a bit since 1876, when we were surrounded by a wharf yard, corn warehouses, a coach house and numerous other buildings – but there’s still plenty of space for travellers in our large car park and the welcome is just as warm as it was back then.

Our garden is a lovely spot to enjoy a few drinks, as you admire our huge old willow tree. Or why not indulge in some alfresco dining on our deck, which overlooks the canal and surrounding countryside? Our carefully considered food menu is as fresh, characterful and well-sourced as we can possibly make it – and we really care about presentation, too.

On Sunday, we headed to Allianz Park to cheer on the Mini's and Junior's from Towcestrians RFC, who we sponsor, at the Oakman Cup. The Oakman Cup is Oakman Inns independent rugby festival, which is held each year for all the partner rugby clubs. The sun shone and it was a great day of rugby from the teams from Towcestrians.

With this in mind, we spoke to both parents and children, and asked them what they would like to see on our new Kids' Menu; we invited some of our younger customers, aged two to 12, to join us for a tasting day, to get their feedback on some of the new dishes.

Worst thing I can say about this visit was that the gloriously bright sun shone in my eyes!

Moved to a different table in the shade under the pagoda and sat back and had a wonderfully peaceful chilled evening in good company amongst a throng of people just enjoying a wonderful evening.

I stay in Milton Keynes regularly with work and only after a quiet word from hotel management did I get the quiet recommendation for this hidden gem just 5 miles into the peaceful countryside.

Will I be going back, heck yeah :-)

Highlights of tonight were the lovely (plenty of care taken to prepare) soft boiled scotch egg with runny yoke.

Delish Steak with Diane sauce accompanied with a side order of broccoli and the apple and berry crumble to finish.

A decent non alcoholic beer meant I could get back to the hotel safely without having to drink fizzy drinks all evening.

When next I bring family to this area we will happily visit here to experience the evening here. Such a lovely find on a week away on work business.

User

Visited here for the first time today and can not fault any aspect of the service, atmosphere, decor and more importantly the food! Possibly the best roast dinner I’ve had at any restaurant, fantastic varied menu and lovely position! Will definitely be back!

User

Great food with lots of choice. Great staff who actually care and they certainly know what they are doing. Best to book though we were lucky we were driving past at lunchtime and got a table without any problem but within 20 minutes it was very busy.

User

Fantastic meal at the Nav today, although we had a big party with kids who were at times a little disruptive and the restaurant was busy. Food was fantastic and service was prompt and kind and friendly from all staff without exception. Our Waitress was ‘Maar’ who was brilliant and very friendly. Look forward to visiting again soon.

User

Excellent place to visit! Food is delicious, great selection of drinks and the service was fantastic. It was for a birthday meal and felt we were looked after very well. Great location with garden seating, patio and raised decking area with views over the fields and canal. Indoor seating as well with an open fire and a well presented bar.

User

Wonderful location. We were very well looked after considering how busy they were.we had the function room which was perfect for the small children we had with us who were quite noisy. The food was pretty good, the only problem was the very tough broccoli, but there was enough on the plate without it.We have been there before and will be back.

User

Was there the other week and the pork belly was so tasty beautiful location... with polite staff all round, would like to give extra credit to joe as he was very assertive and helpful with amazing service skills with my Nans dietary requirements, thanks a lot joe really made my Nans day out special! Overall a must go to place!

User

Location is fab, can't fault that. Food is good, portions fairly good size but still a bit overpriced in my opinion. Would still go back though saying that. Only fault really is that they should have a 'family area' as with 2 impressionable children and the man sitting at the table behind us constantly swearing ruined the evening for us and we had to make a swift exit.....

User

Beautiful location set on the canal but dissapointed with the staff who came across as being stand offish and a little arrogant, not very welcoming.

The haloumi fries were delicious but the gambas pil pil left much to be desired. There was no or little pil pil in this dish. The chef needs to research the recipie. It was prawns in what seemed tinned tomatoes with a hint of garlic, no spice, very bland.

Must say the desserts we had were delicious, apple and berry crumble and passion fruit meringue.

Lovely warm sunny day and company made up for the lack of friendliness from staff who definately need training in customer service.

User

I was very disappointed in your staff and there disinterested manner to there customers. Think some extra customer service training is needed. Food was ok. Used to be a very welcoming place sadly this visit wasn't the best. Wrong drink brought over, ordered roast beef when I asked for cracklin I was told in a very abrupt manner that I would have to pay extra. Not great when I think your prices are on the high side. Won't rush back sadly.

User

Was turned away as I wanted to add my daughter to booking. I know it’s Father’s Day and it’s busy but I said I d sit anywhere or we would nt mind all squeezing round the table and they said no - lost deposit no Father’s Day dinner - shame

User

Second visit since it became a chain. Main pasta dish was so spicy i couldnt eat it but it didnt state that it was on the menu. Asked for some sour cream but they didnt have any. They brought tzatziki and tartare sauce instead!!!!

I suggested creme fraiche might be better, which they had. Rude disinterested waiting staff, wont be back to eat.

User

Lovely place with great views.

Nice food but the the egg cup size portion of chips was a joke for the price of the meal paid. Make sure you eat before!

User

Have always loved the location and the food here but the last few times it's been chaotic and rushed. The last time wasn't great and I've emailed in to say why and no one has got back to me!

User

First time there today and won't be going back, the guy behind the bar wasnt very welcoming and quite rude, then nice as pie to the next man in the queue, very disappointed

User

Disappointed with meal size, wife had pork belly which was 60% fat and couldn’t be eaten. Don’t mention anything negative to staff because you will be given the cold shoulder. Will not eat there again, total waste of £40:00. Location was nice by the canal, ok for a drink but that is all.

User

Worst experience. Disappointing for a surprise birthday meal, we expected it to be great! Service was sooo slow for a quiet week day. Was left with empty plates on our table for over 25 mins. Ordered steak, was over cooked. Then was replaced with a different steak as they had run out... which was fine. Then was charged the difference. Spoke to the manager and was laughed at. Emailed and sent the survey, not even had the decency to reply. Seriously shocking service from what used to be a nice place.

User

Visited about a year ago and the food was amazing! Well that has certainly changed! A group of us went for a birthday meal and we left very disappointed. The service was appalling and the food not much better. One meal sent back, the rest only half eaten. No drinks orders taken, no apology for food complaints, the waiter really could not have cared less. The worst dinner was taken off the bill and a discount given but only because we complained. Will not be returning which is a shame because it’s a beautiful setting.

User

Sadly, this place seems to get worse with each visit. Great location but awful food and slow service. Seems like the chefs can't be bothered and don't care. Mediocre pizza, very dry and tasteless mushrooms and cheap dry muffins. The poached eggs were overcooked so my dish was sent back. The table next door sent one of their dishes back too (wrong order delivered I think). This place needs a good shake up and probably only survives because of it's good location overlooking the Grand Union canal. Shame!
