The Randolph Hotel

About The Randolph Hotel

The Macdonald Randolph Hotel is the leading 5-star hotel in Oxford and part of The Macdonald Hotels' Signature Collection, offering luxurious accommodation

The Randolph Hotel Description

The Randolph Hotel was built in 1864, the architect being William Wilkinson, who was responsible for the plans of many larger homes in North Oxford. At the same time there was much debate over the design of the building. Ruskin was in favour of Sir George Gilbert Smith’s gothic revival, e. g. the martyrs’ memorial. The city council advocated the classical design and did not want to see the neo-gothic style extended into Georgian Beaumont Street. Eventually, a compromise was reached and a simplified gothic design was accepted, described as “Scottish Early English”, following the example of the University Museum and the Union Debating Society.

We were welcomed by a most helpful concierge who not only parked our cars but carried all our luggage, carry cot etc. Check in was swift. Rooms great though a little warm. Room service, babysitting facility, dinner, spa treatments were all fantastic. Breakfast a little underwhelming but our overall stay was outstanding and will definitely stay again.

User

We have just come back from a wonderful stay at the Randolph (our 3rd stay at this hotel) and found the service and professionalism of the staff excellent. We had our dinner and breakfast in the restaurant and it was superb. Our stay last year was great but feel this year it has improved even more. Thankyou Randolph for making my husbands birthday pleasurable.

User

Such lovely staff!! Would throughly recommend the afternoon tea. And a must visit for any Morse fans out there.

User

Our first visit and it was amazing. Gorgeous suite, Easter Eggs on the bed, spotless and attentive service. We were made to feel so welcome and we can't wait to come back. Thank you for a wonderful stay and making the children so welcome too

User

Our 2nd visit didn't disappoint - on arrival the concierge served us sherry and parked our car, they also took our luggage to our room, we had a quick and easy check in with an efficient, smiling receptionist, our room was lovely, very clean and tidy, with some extra touches such as toiletries, robes, slippers, tea/coffee and water. In the evening we had delicious well served food and a wonderful time at the well organised New Year's Eve Ball - Thank you all!

User

My daughter and I went for afternoon tea, it was beautiful inside, staff was amazing and the food was amazing. The freshness of the tea was just incredible. We loved it!

User

Huge thank you to Manager William Thomson for sorting out an issue we had with our room with a speedy and splendid outcome. All the staff were faultless and can’t do enough for you. Looking forward to another stay there.

User

Had a beautiful stay at the Randolph, all staff were wonderful, nothing was too much trouble, concierge parked the car and took our luggage to the room then we had a beautiful day in Oxford came back to receive a quick and easy check in with a smiling receptionist who couldn't have done more for us, we went to our room which was excellent, perfectly clean with extra touches such as Toiletries, robes, slippers and water which we enjoyed. Dinner was also very good, service and food was excellent and when they found out we were celebrating a birthday they brought over a birthday treat with a candle, overall I couldn't fault anything we had a perfect stay and wouldn't recommend to anyone going to Oxford.

User

Excellent. Had a lovely night in one of the suites. Loved the roll top bath. Service warm and welcoming.

User

Excellent friendly service from staff, breakfast food was yumm, room perfect.

User

Whilst it’s a five star hotel the prices for alcohol are exceedingly high. £21.50 for two drinks !!

User

The staff at this hotel is outstanding, as are the public spaces and the food. Nice to have Nespresso makers and Elimis toiletries in the rooms, which are a tad worn. Bathrooms are lovely with excellent rainwater showers and big towels and robes. Location is perfect.

User

Went for a drink with my wife in the Morse bar and was a bit disappointed as the bar staff seemed to want to rush as they were going home then if you wanted a drink you had to go find someone to come serve you

User

Well having stayed at many 5 star Hotels I was quite disappointed with this one booked a Spa break! What spa? Jacuzzi left rather a let to be desired very in clean , on a positive note All Staff were very nice and helpful, they made up for what the hotel lacked. Also Fire alarm at 7.45 keep going off probably did not please everyone, full English breakfast was slow to arrive but worth the wait.

User

The hotel and room were absolutely lovely and the hotel is full of character. Breakfast was however a disappointment for a 5 star hotel. There is continental selection which was poor. 1 choice of ham and sliced cheese no salamies italian meats etc. Poor selection of dry pastries and very watery yoghurt. The cooked to order breakfast we sent back first morning as beans were cold and the only place a cold tomato has is in a salad. Asked for HP sauce and someone arrived and spooned onto plate it would have been nice to have been given a small pot such as is used for the jams. Dirty crockery wasn't cleaned away in timely fashion and I ended up moving dishes to another table close to us that had not been cleared down and had to ask following morning for dirty plates and bowls to be removed even though staff were milling around wiping down tables and going round filling up Orange juice. Decided to have a look at reviews after first morning to see that other people have had poor experiences and these have been acknowledged by management but obviously not satisfactorily addressed. Also found it incredible given cost of breakfast there was a surcharge for kippers and smoked salmon. I have been to 4 star hotels that have offered salmon in their buffet selection as standard.

User

Just got back from a 4 night stay at the Randolph can't believe how this hotel has gone down from last year paid over £700 for an executive room it was nice although such a trek from reception had a few drinks in the morse bar and as we couldn't sit near the fireplace we were freezing as the doors kept getting left open, slow check out this morning one concierge on and at least 6 people queuing so we left and found our own taxi definetly won't go back again

User

Nice setting, poor food. I did the Christmas dinner and disco. The bar was understaffed, the card machine didn't work and the wine was kept nowhere near it meaning queue time was 20 minutes. The food was very salty, undercooked veg, overcooked turkey, non-descript dessert. The disco was cheesy and good though. You'll get a better dinner in just about any Oxford college (and for much cheaper).

User

Absolutely underwhelming stay. Told room wasn't ready on arrival and would be at least another 30 mins without a sorry or let's see if we can sort something until asked - none of polite conversation you usually get whist at check-in, do you need parking, WiFi, have you been to Oxford before etc. Check out similar - nothing other than to wrongly charge us for item and then didn't even have grace to apologise. Concierge too busy sitting down to open door. Room service knocked 2 hrs early to come into clean room and then asked what time will you be leaving then. All in all poor customer engagement and certainly service some way short of competent. Room was not 5 star standard though clean it was lacking in extras that expect of a hotel of this standard. The staff in restaurant serving breakfast were attentive, professional and well managed though
