About The Red Lion Stodmarsh

Contemporary country dining pub

The Red Lion Stodmarsh Description

Owned since late 2015 by four friends, The Red Lion is one for the bird-watchers, although as we've probably all watched birds in our time, that means everyone. It happens to be close to Stodmarsh National Nature Reserve, the largest in the south east, whose reed-beds are home to bitterns, marsh harriers, ducks and waders. So, if nearby Canterbury's medieval streets, lovely as they are, get too busy, this could be where to head. From the front it looks like two gable-ended buildings, one weatherboarded, the other tile hung, joined in the middle by the entrance. This configuration may be explained by the fact that, while originally 15th century, it was rebuilt in 1801 following a fire. The low-ceilinged, boarded and stone-floored interior, with library book wallpaper, could remind one of home, albeit a home with a fair sprinkling of old scales, copper pots, jugs, baskets, horseshoes and tea-lights. To all this add log fires in winter, a secluded, flowery garden for other times and a bar that dispenses changing real ales, such as Gadds' from Ramsgate or Old Dairy from Tenterden. Pave the way for a meal with a taster of tempura vegetables or share a charcuterie board, then choose a typical starter of sizzling king prawns in garlic and chilli oil; or woodland mushroom bruschetta, followed by a Kentish lamb with carrot and caraway purée, dauphinoise potatoes, seasonal greens and lamb jus; gilt-head sea bream with crushed new potatoes, courgette linguine and sauce vièrge; or, for two, whisky-cured pork ribs with home-made barbecue sauce, onion rings, corn on the cob and salad. For something sweet to finish, there's treacle tart with lemon sorbet; or apple and pear crumble with crème anglaise.

Everyone at the Red Lion Inn at Stodmarsh looks forward to welcoming you to this prized spot in the Garden of England. There's really no-where else quite like it!

Had hock terrine and a delicious chicken dish with warm buttery mash and tender vegetables. Full of flavour. My husband also enjoyed tender beef and a rich warm gravy. He had smoked salmon with warm beetroot as a starter.

Thoroughly enjoyable. Would have liked more

toast to go with the terrine though.

Staff polite and attentive.

Would happily go back

Been going to The Red Lion on and off for over 15 years and various Landlords have come and gone but in that time we have always had great food, and service in a welcoming country inn atmosphere. Sadly my recent visit for a drink and meal under fairly new ownership left me very disappointed and unfortunately I do not feel it is anywhere I would want to return to. The previous character of the pub has been stripped away and it felt bare, cold and lifeless. The radiators (nearly into December) were stone cold and choosing a table by the log fire to avoid a nasty draft, had to be abandoned as smoke was belching over us and into the room. My ordered meal of Shin of Beef took ages to arrive and was covered in a dark, gluey and bitter tasting Bisto type gravy that had formed a skin. The potato was cold and vegetables uninspiring. My husband's meal of Game Pie didn't taste any better, in fact it tasted the same as mine. I was not prepared to waste any more money on a dessert and on leaving overhead some fellow diners complaining that their risottos were undercooked. The only good thing about this pub was the charming young waitress who served this awful meal with a smile. For goodness sake Red Lion, get a new chef and put some soul back into your pub before you turn everyone away and lose a little treasure of a country pub.
