As the First Emperors terriroty grew many people devised plans to assasinate him. One famous attempt was in 227BC when the scholar-swordsman Jing Ke brought the head of an enemy to the Emperor.
He gained an audience with the emperor and hid a dagger in a scroll. Unfortunately, the emperor's royal guards were not allowed to enter the chamber and Emperor Zheng was unable to draw his sword which was very long. In the scuffle, Jing hurled the dagger missing the emperor missing him and hitting a bronze pillar.
This stone relic shows Jing Ke's assassination attempt.

Some Wednesday wisdom.🤔

Did you know... the terracotta warriors were originally painted. After firing they were all painted in bright colours signifying their rank.
Some of the excavated warriors still have traces of the paint on them.

Before Emperor Qin Shi Huang conquered all of the states of China he became king of the Qin state at just 13 years of age. Even his early life came with controversy. Claims that he was an illegitimate child affected his reputation. Allegations that his mother was a concubine to ex-merchant and minister Lu Buwei, who gave the concubine to father of the Emperor after she was already pregnant.
While these claims have been widely believed throughout Chinese history modern scholars have reason to doubt this account.

A standing bronze figure of a court official from the early Ch'ing dynasty.
The Ch'ing dynasty was a period of great artistic triumph. Emporer Ch'ien Lung was a great patron of the arts.

Chinese wisdom for your Thursday Motivation.

The First Emperor's anxiety of the afterlife caused him to spend a lot of resources to the construction of his mausoleum. 700,000 labourers were used in its construction at Mount Li. That's twice the number used to build the Great Wall. No wonder it has become one of the great wonders of the world.
This picture gives you an insight into just one of the chambers holding the Terracotta Warriors, at its site at Mount Li.

The crossbow from the period of the first emperor was very strong and could inflict a fatal blow. Arrows used from these devices could easily pierce through the armour used at the time and are believed to be twice as powerful as a modern-day assault rifle. The front line of defence in the emperor's tomb as the kneeling crossbowman.

The first Emperor was "a man of great intellect and force of character, but he was exceedingly superstitious and in constant dread of death."
His anxiety about the after-life caused him to focus a lot of resources to the construction of his tomb which was planned as early as 246BC.

The amazing terracotta warriors are known as the eighth wonder of the ancient world. Gaze in awe at the unique life-size museum replicas specially made from China, costumes, armour and cinematic displays.

Love this museum it really gives you a good impression of what went on in China all those years ago

User

The displays are very good, but be warned that, like the other museums in Dorchester (the dinosaur/mummy/Tutankhamen/teddybears), it is a very small museum. I recommend getting the multi-ticket and see all in a day.

User

I agree with many other reviews. In itself very small but well worth the gold ticket to access all the other small museum's.
