delicious food really bright and healthy and pretty on the plate. Great staff lovely warm atmosphere and was like sitting in a snow globe stunning view of the river yesterday

User

We arrived early for our booking which i had made online. We were shown to our table by a very helpful chap. The setting and the Trout itself was lovely. We had a bit of a wait for the waiter to take our order but on a busy Friday night it's to be expected. Our orders were taken and we could not fault the food or the waiting staff. The whole table enjoyed their food. I have no hesitation in recommending this pub. It is definitely somewhere we would come back to on our next visit to Oxford from Yorkshire.

User

The Trout is one of our favorite places in Oxford, and we've been taking travelers there for over 15 years. The food is delicious, and the walk to get their superb.

User

Stopped by for lunch today, much busier than usual. Staff definitely deserve medals for some of the grief they had to endure from "uptight patrons". Lovely place, excellent customer service. Fantastic food.

User

So difficult to choose from the menu as there was such a lovely choice. All the food was amazing, and service was great too, very accommodating and with good humour. Thank you for a lovely lunch!

User

On a lovely Summers day , this place can’t be beaten . Food was outstanding !!

User

If it is a beautiful summer’s day and you can get there early, then there’s nothing nicer than a table by the river. The food is good enough, but it’s the atmosphere on days like that which make it special.

User

I visited this pub yesterday from West Yorkshire (4 hour drive each way) as I was treating a customer to lunch who said this pub was well known. I have to say it was worth the long car drive as the food was excellent and very reasonably priced. The staff were all very friendly and couldn’t do enough for you. I had a lovely welcome from Mikey and was served by a young lady (South African I think) who did a great job of looking after us - service with a smile! I would definitely recommend this pub for the great service & food not to mention the lovely setting. Big thumbs up to The Trout 👍🏻

User

I have many years of fond memories at The Trout. The perfect place to just relax and have a drink and a bite to eat.

User

Group of 10 including 2 children arrived early and shown table straight away high chair in situ as requested. Food Order taken after all seated, no delay in service, no matter what was ordered was excellent no complaints from anyone.Table service team / bar staff were great. Top quality food and venue and we will ENDEAVOUR to return in a few months..

User

Food, tasty and varied as always. Staff friendly and obliging. We meet friends here twice a year - love the location and ambience. Introduced many other people here too.

User

Even on a dull wet day, we loved the view of the river. Took lots of photos between showers, then had the combi sharer for lunch. Plenty there for the 3 of us & very tasty.

User

As on other visits the Trout never fails to live up to expextasions, friends up from Sussex joined us for a very enjoyable evening with good food good excellent wine and our waitress looked after all our needs

User

Absolutely amazing! Food was so lovely and flavoursome for all parties! One person couldn't finish theirs but loved it so much they wanted to take it home!

The Australian waitress (with the Star Wars tattoo) we had was out of this world! She was sooooo funny, soooo friendly and sooooo helpful!

Definitely need more people like her everywhere and just in general day to day life!

Wonderful experience overall!

User

Pint of cider and some fries, fries weren’t up to much to be honest and alioli tasted a bit funny but lovely pint of Waddle Duck Cider. Funny smell of off fish as well ???

User

Had a lovely lunch with my sister today, I am coeliac so needed gluten free - although the menu didn’t show gf options, when I asked a waiter he gave me the allergens folder and there were quite a few choices which was good , great setting, need to book in advance although as we got there before 12.00 midday, we managed to grab a nice table on the riverside which is on a first come first served basis.

User

Had a drink outside but not allowed to eat outside this was a little disappointing

Our meals were excellent and they catered for my son as he not long had surgery with smaller portions

Service was excellent but this was Thursday around 2pm.

User

Friendly, dog-friendly, good food, especially the squid yum!

User

Beautiful location and lovely food. We went for a bar meal in the afternoon - it was busy in the ‘bar area’ but not the restaurant - apparently - and we were moved about three times as it wasn’t clear what tables were bar and which were restaurant - staff were polite but left us to it until we were sat in the wrong spot....Would eat there again though.

User

Wasn't overly impressed with the food. Wasn't very warm when it arrived. Presentation wasn't good either. Creme brulee in a small tea cup with a dessert spoon. Waitress was polite but a bit rude. She dressed one ofour guest as "you in the grey t shirt" when taking our order. When he repeated what she said. Her reply was " I don't know your names" do I. Not sure how I kept quiet but didn't want to spoil our evening with friends hadn't seen in years.

User

Nice venue, starter plates not taken away before main meal arrives, starter was just 4 scallops with a bit of greenery for £10.50. Chicken burger OK , fish main OK but I've been spoilt with Finnish service and sea food. Beer battered cod would probably have been better.

User

5 star setting and building. But on arrival no bar snacks were available. Service was very average dragging score down.

User

Service slow, food runner looked miserable and unfriendly, we where sat on garden furniture, indoors, which wasn’t pleasant as our plates slipped around on the glass table top, and for a pub it was a little pricey!

User

Really disappointing service as everything else was beautiful. Bar staff need to learn how to work a bar as people waiting 2 minutes we’re getting served before people who were waiting 20 minutes. Basic stuff! Otherwise impressive venue

User

If your gluten free it's a definite no no.

No mention of gluten free dishes on the menu just vegitarian.

Didn't have a clue.

Tried to charge us £145 for a set menu with a bottle of wine @ £22 each. Should be charged £88 plus 2 beers!!!!

Very slow service even though it wasn't busy!

Superb setting ruined by a very poor meal.

Not forgetting the rat running under the tables!!!!

Don't think we wil be going there again any time soon.

User

I was taken to this pub by an enthusiastic English friend. As an Aussie I was looking forward to a quintessentially English experience. it looked beautiful. Sat outside at 12 midday and waited and waited. Menu provided. Not many people there. Maybe 15. At 1.45pm we went to bar to be told that owing to the previous day being Father’s Day and busy they as yet didn’t know what food they could offer and were still in the process of looking in the kitchen to find out. The idea that at 12.45 they still didn’t know what food they had was ludicrous and shocking. I was under the impression that provisions for the next day are always assessed at the end of the previous day? BTW the menu we had been given was now irrelevant and another would be provided as soon as they knew what was in their kitchen. We left and went to another quaint charming more modest pub very close by which was trouble free friendly and really delicious ‘English’ food.

User

Beautiful and sunny Saturday and we enjoyed a number of drinks on the lovely terrace with plans to have food later. What a disappointment when we were then told that no food was being served outside despite the fact that there is a large sign indoors signposting to the DINING TERRACE!. A massive disappointment.

User

What a shame. A glorious evening spoilt by the terrible service here. Probably 200 pieces of dirty crockery stashed behind the flowerbeds and piled high on at least seven large tables. People having to clear their own tables of previous occupants dishes. Our food orders were incorrect. No cutlery. A complete disaster and I won’t be going back. Sort it for the sake of others.

User

We were looking forward to a pleasant, romantic end to an couple of days in oxford.

We actually had a miserable experience in all - it seemed to be a total surprise to the trout that they may be busy on a hot, summers evening.

The system of seating and ordering is “original” to say the least, it was so jolly waiting for 20 minutes at the understaffed, understocked bar as our food was served. Apparently there is an international napkin and cutlery shortage which has slowed service down.

It was great fun watching a couple of gentlemen stare vaguely at tables trying to work out where food may eventually be going, the table numbers are secreted in the dried out potted stalks which may have been plants at some point previously.

Although there isn’t waiter service outside it appears that if you’re young, female, blonde, and with ample cleavage, you can squeakily ask one of the busy waiters to bring your order, take your drinks order, take your money, and bring your change back - it would’ve been nice if the same waiter could’ve cleared the previous diners plates from our tables, however, I’m Neither blonde nor female.

On the plus side, waiting so long at the bar allows for a certain degree of camaraderie, I believe I may have made friends with a number of other people who were suitably unimpressed, and of course you get to hear the fascinating story from the barman who will be leaving next week to go to Uni, so apparently doesn’t give a toss(I wish him well for his career away from hospitality).

Perhaps next time the trout could warn you that they’d much rather swipe your credit card and take money, without the actual burden of offering decent food and service.

User

We have been going to this establishment for many years and have noticed the decline in the service! Than tonight a very rude man called Mark Richardson had the audacity to call my partner a liar! He was very rude and confrontational and completely unapologetic for a mistake made on your end!

User

Very poor customer service. No response to online booking and difficult to find a phone number to call. The automated service when you call is frustrating and no option to try and book a table for more than 12 people (despite the site instructing you to call to book a table for 12+ people!). When I was eventually offered the option to be put through to a real person the phone rang and rang (restaurant was open). Seems like I ended up dodging a bullet by not being able to book here for my big 30th birthday lunch (with myself and others travelling for 1 1/2 hours each from Bristol, London and Birmingham). Looks and sounds like a lovely place on the website but reading through other reviews, along with my own experience of trying to book a table, it sounds like this place seriously needs to step up.

User

The service was appalling. After being asked to wait an hour and a half to be seated, eating a small sharing platter and having a beer on one of those knee high tables, we were forgotten about. After finally being seated, 15 minutes later the waiter comes to take the order only to return 5seconds later to tell us that 3 of the 5 mains we ordered ran out. The only thing we could do was to get up and leave.

User

Restaurant that sells beer, beautiful building set out to serve food. Couldn't get to the bar for a drink as they'd set small tables and chairs in front of it to get more people in. Always wanted to go there but won't be visiting again anytime soon

User

Pre-booked but were told when we arrived that they had tried to contact me to say we were cancelled because the food was spoiled overnight due to a power failure. No messages on my phone though. However, when I checked my emails I found that they had emailed when we were actually in the pub (we stayed for a drink) to inform us of our cancellation - but had sent another, 8 minutes previously, reminding us of our booking! We stayed for a drink, only to be told there was no bitter! No bitter - in a pub! Read some of the Trip Advisor reviews before visiting here. I wish I had!

User

I've posted on trip advisor in detail. If you are organising a group visit to Oxford please think twice before booking here. Some reviews seem very positive but our experience was awful. Maybe they had an off day, but that doesn't excuse the really terrible attitude of the assistant manager, shoddy service and mediocre fare.

User

I have waited for a call back from your manager regarding the online feedback I gave and it’s been nearly a week.

I came for dinner in Saturday 14th July at 9:30. We were shown to our table and the orders were taken along with some requirements. When the appetisers arrived (bread) it was so stale I couldn’t even bite it so we had to wait for the servers to come and ask for new bread, this took over 10 minutes to arrive and he said ‘sorry this is the only bread we’ve got’. There was also still clingfilm wrapped around the butter.

Out starters arrived about 2 minutes after the bread so we didn’t even have time to eat it in the end. When they arrived we asked for no hummus and it had it on the plate, at this point we were hungry so just ate round it but that’s the point of asking for things to be left off the plate.

When the main courses arrived we were served by a gentlemen with a pair of shorts and a hoody and to be honest he didn’t even look like he worked there and looked extremely unprofessional. They gave us the side of veg which we ordered and they were cold. The pork belly never had crackling it was just soft fat and the pie pasty was so hard I could hardly cut it with a knife and fork. At no point whilst we were sat down at the table were we asked if we would like a drink I had to go and ask one of the waitresses what our table number was so I could go to the bar and order our drinks. It wouldn’t have been so bad if everyone else around was being treated the same however it just seemed to be us that didn’t get any service. We finished our dinner and waited around 40 minutes and our plates still hadn’t been collected. It was only when I made a comment ‘I think they have forgotten about is’ that one of the waiters heard they came and collected the plates.

I was so disappointed as I was really looking forward to eating here as the reviews I’ve heard from friends and family have all been great.

Left feeling very let down

User

I am completely disappointed by the people attending at The Trout - it is much better for them and for customers also to have them at their home without employment. They ruined my last evening in England. They were incredibly rude, indiferent and it was a dunce experience. I am very happy with my decision to larve that place and I had excellent food and service in another location, same city. In their place, I would be abshasged at such reviews as I am not the only person pinning down the slingers.

User

Having visited the Trout for well over 35 years, visited in May and were appalled by the service (non existent), rude waiting staff and 45 minutes to get starter. We left and were not given an apology, offer of a piece of bread or anything while we were waiting.

So sad, have loved the Trout my whole life, will not be returning. The good news is that there a lots of wonderful pubs offering good service, lovely food and friendly atmosphere.

User

Food is pretty boring, staff is untrained, service takes too long and if you complain you might meet the rude owner who just wants you to leave.

User

delicious food really bright and healthy and pretty on the plate.

I have waited for a call back from your manager regarding the online feedback I gave and it’s been nearly a week.

I came for dinner in Saturday 14th July at 9:30. We were shown to our table and the orders were taken along with some requirements.
