Focussing on the plant nursery for a moment. I am so proud of our small nursery team! Myself (Emma), Paul and Kate. We also have our brilliant volunteer Anne aka ‘Thursday Wonder’ plus Abbi our weekend helper, we all play our parts in the immense amount of work that takes place here.
We tend to the borders, mow the lawn, get the plants out for sale, create the shop displays and serve all of our lovely customers plus we produce 85% ish (!) of the plants we sell on site from w...ithin our own four walls, propagated by division or cuttings from stock plants and borders. We also sow a huge amount of seed spending most of April pricking out seedlings.
We use peat free Sylvagrow compost mixed with different components depending on what we’re potting. We only use biological control against pests. We pinch out, feed, water and really care for these plants and it shows.
I have been so lucky to have great teachers over the years. Fergus Garrett when I started at Great Dixter, Lexi Datta and Jacqui Ruthven at Sissinghurst Castle and Elizabeth Strangman who has transformed the way we grow. I have listened, watched and am always learning. The beauty of horticulture is there’s always more to learn and I will always be grateful for their generosity, patience, knowledge and support.
May is a crazy month for all in the trade, it’s hard to catch your breath but I’ve never been so proud of our nursery as I am this year and I’m making sure I notice this and say it aloud! Thank you to my wonderful team and support network....best Spring yet!!! Emma X

The nursery is looking beautiful, the much needed rain has given everything a boost. Our glasshouses are full of bedding and our annuals are now a good size. We are going to plant our own annuals for cutting next week. Remember folks, once they’re gone, they’re gone! We have 7 varieties of Cosmos, 2 of Ammi, 6 different Zinnias, 5 different Nicotianas (not quite ready yet) Cobea, Poppies, Linum the list goes on.

This explains why we had to close this morning. https://www.kentonline.co.uk/…/school-c losed-after-cash-ma…/

We were frustrated at having to close today but the police have now opened the lane and all is well for being open as usual tomorrow! We have masses of very healthy plants with lots of flowers opening every day. We are open all over the bank holiday weekend.

User

Sorry we have to close today. There’s been a police incident in water lane, nothing to do with us but the lane will be closed for most of today.

A beautiful evening for a stroll through the nursery. Our plants are looking so healthy, we’ve had many compliments this year, well done team, a brilliant job!

Today, our two day course begins on how to design a border from scratch. Our own borders are looking great right now, the Alliums are about to burst open to join the tulips, the dark bronze foliage of Berberis and Physocarpus Diablo strikes a contrast against Euphorbia characias Wulfenii, Geum Marmalade is in full flow with Geum Totally Tangerine waiting in the wings to take over. There’s plenty of inspiration for our course attendees in the nursery giving us much needed breaks from the theory and a chance to get fresh air and file away what we’ve learnt into our busy brains!

Each year at Easter we raise money for Admiral Nurses who provide specialist support for families living with dementia. All of the sale price of these exquisite hand painted eggs goes directly to Admiral Nurses. Aren’t they beautiful? So detailed, Brenda who paints them is a very patient and talented lady.
