Visit The Princess Royal Class Locomotive Trust’s 'WEST SHED' - home of iconic steam locomotives and historic railway carriages. Learn about our collection through museum displays and films and see what's going on in our active engineering workshop.

The WEST SHED is located on the Swanwick Junction museum complex of the Midland Railway-Butterley – a working heritage railway. Visit for a day and explore the whole site including museums, narrow gauge railway, a Victorian railwayman's church, country park and more (individual opening times vary).

OPENING TIMES FOR THE WEST SHED (2017-2018):

The West Shed is open to the public daily 11. 00am - 4. 00pm between February and November.

We will be officially closed for the Winter period from 20th November 2017 until 17th February 2018. During this period the West Shed will still be physically open to visitors when staff and volunteers are working here, but the full museum & public facilities will not be available and there will be days when the building is closed. Winter opening hours are dependent on staff & volunteer availability and cannot be guaranteed in advance.

HOW TO GET TO THE WEST SHED:
The West Shed is located on the Swanwick Junction museum complex of the Midland Railway-Butterley. Normal access to the site is via a heritage train ride from Butterley Station (fare payable), alighting at Swanwick Station to walk up to the West Shed (approx. 430 metres walk including some uneven ground).

Access to Swanwick Junction is also possible via a walking route from Butterley Station. Please note: this is half a mile over uneven ground and unfortunately not suitable for visitors with limited mobility, wheelchairs or pushchairs. When trains are not running, please enquire about alternative access options.

Please note that The Princess Royal Class Locomotive Trust's West Shed is a separate organization from the Midland Railway-Butterley. Admission to the West Shed is FREE (donations welcome! ) but to travel by train from Butterley Station separate train fares apply, as charged by the Midland Railway Trust.
