The Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) assures the safety, quality and efficacy of veterinary medicines to protect animal health, public health & the environment. The VMD is an executive agency of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs

Founded in 1989 The VMD is a government agency of Defra responsible for the Veterinary Medicines Regulations (VMR) which set out the UK legal controls on veterinary medicines, including their manufacture, advertising, marketing, supply and administration.

It is the responsibility of anyone engaged in these activities to comply with the VMR. This includes the buying and selling of veterinary medicines online.
