Victoria Cottage Description

A delightful, light and airy terraced cottage, formerly half of 'The Sovereign' public house, in pretty Victoria Street, situated in the heart of the Conservation area of Whitstable and only 2 minutes from the unique shops and tempting restaurants of Harbour Street, and an easy 5 minute stroll from the beach.

'The Sovereign' pub was originally a Georgian dwelling house with stables, outhouses and small orchard at the rear. It became a beer-house in 1835, when William Appleton obtained a licence to sell beer from his home. He called the property 'The Sovereign' after the currency unit of the time and in keeping with his uncle's inn, known as the 'Guinea Tavern' at The Wall, Whitstable. Eventually William owned three taverns in the town. 'The Sovereign' was the last to be converted back to private use and it became two cottages in 2003. It was the last tavern in Kent to bear the name 'The Sovereign'.
