Rev. Peter Laws, a Baptist minister with a passion for the macabre, set out on a quest to understand why so many people love things that are spooky, morbid and downright repellent. He met vampires, hunted werewolves in Hull and was chased by a chainsaw-wielding maniac through a farmhouse full of hanging bodies. Staring into the darkness of a Transylvanian night, he asked: What is it that makes millions of people seek to be disgusted and freaked out? And, in a world that worsh...ips rationality and points an accusing finger at violent video games and gruesome films, can an interest in horror culture actually give us safe ways to confront our mortality? Might it even have power to re-enchant our jaded world?
This is a free event - no tickets are needed. Just grab your crucifixes, pack the garlic, and join us on Thursday 1st November from 6.30pm as our very own Sinister Minister tells us all about his romp into our morbid curiosities! It'll be spooktacular...

Our café manager says "Cressida Connolly's 'After The Party', a dark tale set in the late 1930s/early 1940s, shows that going down the wrong path can be all too easy. A gripping read!" #teamcafew #waterstones #cressidaconolly #penguinbooks #bookofthemonth What are YOU reading this weekend?

Celebrate the release of 'Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald - The Original Screenplay' with us on 16th November as we return to the wizarding world.
We're hosting a drop-in celebration here at WaterstonesMK in intu Milton Keynes to celebrate the publication of this new screenplay (and mark the release of the film). Come any time from 4pm onwards and try our worksheets, quiz sheets and activities. Join a wand workshop at 5pm, a dragon egg identification class at 6pm... or a divination class at 7pm - or stay for all if you wish!
We look forward to seeing you in costumes suitable for the Wizarding World* (either from Newt Scamander's 1920's era or from Harry Potter's time) - but please park your broomsticks responsibly, and remember that The Point's proximity can make landing a little tricky!

As the crisp autumnal leaves begin to fall, a foodie’s thoughts turn to harvesting the fruits of the season. Apples, pears and raspberries seem to have survived the searing summer in surprising quantities, and the blackberries in Buckinghamshire have made up in number for being a little smaller than usual. But what do you do with nature’s bounty?
Authors like Lillie O’ Brien and Pam Corbin have the answer. There’s something deliciously satisfying about creating your own jams and preserves... and if a bookseller can follow the instructions and pot up a luscious purple preserve, then it’s easier than you’d think...

When it comes to books, we pride ourselves on being able to spot the ones that will be special... We would like to introduce you to ‘I Am The Seed’, a landmark publication from Nosy Crow and the National Trust, in store now (RRP £25.00). Featuring a nature poem for every day of the year, this is a book to share, inspire, love and treasure. It is undoubtedly a book for all ages.
Forgive a booklover for waxing lyrically but give yourself some time to spend with this gorgeous book – take a moment to enjoy it, pause to embrace the glorious illustrations and lose yourself in the deftly crafted poetry. Look up the poem for your birthday, or the poem for today. It is an absolute joy...❤️📘

We were here for Simon Sebag Montefiore's book signing of The Romanovs. Well done by the host who kept us amused because of delays due to storm Doris. It was worth the wait. The talk was inspiring and interesting, can't wait to get started on the book. Lovely man!

There is nothing like it after a hard shopping trip with the family, after a bad day at work or even just because you need a lift. The staff are enthusiastic, friendly and helpful. So enthusiastic that Julie got both my boys reading "diary" style kids books (diary of a wimpy kid and dennis the menace) and now they both want to WRITE their own diaries! A miracle on its own! They make you feel at home and go over and beyond duty to make you want to read. My favourite place to be :)

My 4 week old baby woke up hungry in MK Waterstones so out of politeness I ask one of the staff if they'd mind be sitting and breastfeeding him. Her reply was "Of course! And if anyone else has a problem with it they will have to deal with me first!" She then proceeded to proclaim the benefits of breastfeeding and tell me stories of when she was feeding her little ones! Big up Waterstones, I was made to feel so welcome and comfortable!

Just back from a shopping trip with my 8 year old book loving daughter, to spend her latest £10 gift card. She was over the moon to discover the book she wanted was half price at £7.49, so I told her she had £2.51 left and she started looking at the bits and bobs by the till. She chose something she wanted (a little bag of gems)....we couldn't see a price so I said let's ask the lady. Having obviously overheard our conversation, the lovely lady behind the counter said 'ooh I think they're £2.99 but it looks like the bag's been opened so I'll take a bit of money off, they're now £2.51'

My daughters eyes lit up that she could afford them and I was so impressed at what a lovely gesture that was, fantastic customer service! Thanks so much!

User

I had been to the store yesterday and today with my daughter and her friend. The staffs were so friendly and interactive with the children, they also patiently explained about the upcoming events with us. They were so informative about the competitions held and suggested ideas and also appreciated my daughter's work. Was a pleasant time at the store. Many thanks.
