WET PLASTERING / FLOAT AND SKIM Skimming:
Skimming is the application of a finish coat to a wall or ceiling. It is usually applied in 2 coats to (approx 3-4mm in total) but in one setting and is then troweled smooth and ready for sealing and painting.
Skim coats can be applied to most surfaces where a good finish is required and the back ground is sound.
OVERBOARDING:
This process would be used for example when an artexed of old lathe and plaster ceiling can not be skimmed on due to being un-sound. Plasterboard sheets are fixed through the existing ceiling in to the ceiling joists which then provides a fresh plasterboard surface to skim.
FLOAST AND SET:
This is the application of 2-coat plaster work (wet plastering) there are many different base coat products including: bonding coat, hardwall, sand and cement and many more that can be used depending on the situation. This would normally be used on block work or brick walls and is applied approx 10-15mm thick for the first coat and 3-4mm skim on top.
The backing or base coat is ruled off with a straight edge, allowed to dry and then finished with a skim coat that can be painted. In some cases the base coat will need to be left over night to dry before applying the skim coat.
DOT AND DAB:
Dot and dab is an alternative to float and set and involves adhering sheets of plasterboard to a wall and then skimming smooth. It can be a much quicker process to float and set sometimes as it can be skimmed sooner and drying times are shorter.
