About West Sussex Local Offer

The LO brings together services, information and events for children & young people with additional needs & /or disabilities, their families, professionals

West Sussex Local Offer Description

The SEND Code of Practice became law in September 2014 and saw many changes within the world of Special Educational Needs and /or Disability (SEND) provision. One was the requirement for every Local Authority to have a Local Offer.

The West Sussex Parent Carer Forum
actively participated in every stage of the
development of our Local Offer by attending
workshops and providing individual and
group feedback to the various pilot sites.

A parent* representative is a member of the Local
Offer Steering Group (which meets every other
month) ensuring the parental voice continues to be
heard. This year we recruited over 20 parents to
act as Local Offer Ambassadors within the county.
Together we continue to promote and support the
growth /development of our Local Offer. These
parents represent a wide range of differing needs
and are based across our large County. Their input
is important in ensuring our Local Offer reflects
our SEND community and is truly inclusive.

A key issue for the Forum has always been to keep
our children safe. Whilst statutory services are
subject to rigorous checks this is not always the
case for those within the private sector. Please
do take the time to watch our video about ŌĆśUsing
the Local Offer SafelyŌĆÖ and read the guidance
notes. You can find this on the website homepage
using the ŌĆśHow to use our Local OfferŌĆÖ button.

I am sad to have to let you know that Charlotte is moving on from her role as Local Offer Officer. She is moving into a role within the County Council that will have links with the Local Offer and she will continue to support, promote and be passionate about it, and the families and those working with families who benefit from using it.
I think you will agree with me when I say that Charlotte has played a huge part in the success of our Local Offer, to the extent that it is ...recognised nationally as an example of good practice. She has worked closely with parent carers, voluntary groups and professionals to make sure the Local Offer is shaped and developed by all that use it.
CharlotteŌĆÖs last day with us will be Friday 4th January 2018. We may not be able to check or post on the Facebook page as regular in the interim so please email localoffer@westsussex.gov.uk instead. Charlotte is able to pre-schedule posts to the page and groups before she leaves. Therefore if you are a provider and wanting something promoted get in-touch before the 2nd of January so this can be scheduled. We will keep you updated.
Thank you, Heather McIntosh ŌĆō SENDIAS Team Manager

Hi all recieved this message from beat: fundraising to beat eating disorders
"Hello,
I am writing to tell you about a valuable new telephone coaching service available within Sussex for parent carers of someone with an eating disorder provided by Beat, the UKŌĆÖs eating disorder charity.
... What is Echo?
Echo is a Peer Coaching Support Service. It is a free telephone support service that matches skilled volunteer coaches with parent carers who are supporting someone with an eating disorder. Not having someone to talk to regularly about the challenges and frustrations of supporting someone can be lonely and isolating, particularly if you're not able to discuss and share with family and friends. A friendly, weekly, 30-minute chat on the phone can make all the difference; reducing the isolating effects of the illness, whilst empowering you to make a positive difference to your loved ones recovery.
Peer coaching is:
ŌĆó Trust-based ŌĆó Confidential ŌĆó Supportive
Through listening, reflection, and questioning Echo Coaches guide you to find your own solutions to the difficult situations you might face, building up your resilience and growing your skills base so you are able to support your loved one to overcome their eating disorder and achieve recovery.
What's great about Echo?
ŌĆó Free weekly calls from a peer coach ŌĆó The opportunity to talk to someone who understands your circumstances and gain emotional, social and practical skills. ŌĆó Our dedicated Peer Coaching team will match you with someone who has similar shared experience ŌĆó We protect the safety of all involved by automatically connecting you and your coaches phones anonymously, this means no personal telephone numbers need to be exchanged.
How to access Echo?
Anyone interested in receiving support will just need to complete a quick sign-up form ŌĆō please contact echo@beateatingdisorders.org.uk for more information. We would greatly appreciate it if you could circulate this information with your contacts and service users across Sussex, so that anyone who would benefit from this service can get involved. Please do let me know if you have any questions at all or if you would like me to forward on hard copies of the attached flyer.
Best Wishes,
Catherine"
