Following the election results last Thursday I would like to congratulate the new and returning councillors who were elected to the Borough Council and to our Town and Parish Councils.
I would like to thank all the people who are no longer members of the council for their hard work and dedication, often over many years service to the community, I wish them well for the future.
I would like to pay particular tribute to Julian McGhee Sumner, our previous leader who lost his sea...t by a narrow margin.
At the start of this new council year your Conservative councillors are committed to work hard for the benefit of the residents of the Borough, striving to deliver good quality and value for money in all our services as set out in our manifesto. We look forward to working constructively with councillors of all parties.
Pauline Jorgensen Deputy Leader (acting leader) Wokingham Borough Council

Building work has now started on the £12million Phoenix Avenue development site in Wokingham creating a new community of 68 homes. At the official sod-cutting ceremony, to mark the start of construction, a time capsule containing local photographs, residents’ written memories of the old Eustace Crescent flats, and newspaper clippings were buried by members of the Norreys Community Association (NCA) and pupils from All Saints CE Primary School. The Wokingham Borough Council pr...oject is being managed by its company Wokingham Housing Ltd (WHL), in partnership with award-winning developer Hill, chosen by competitive tender to build the homes. They will range from one bedroom apartments to four bed houses, each with their own communal or private garden, set within carefully designed landscaping for the whole development. Families are due to start moving in from early spring 2017. The new buildings replace former Eustace Crescent - now demolished and renamed in a public competition ready for its regeneration. Joining local residents at the ceremony were representatives from the borough council, WHL, Hill and WHL’s construction consultants Ridge. “We are very proud to be leading the re-development of the old Eustace Crescent flats in to the new community that will become Phoenix Avenue,” said Bill Flood WHL’s managing director. “It’s fantastic to be able to show what the council can do by using its own housing company to create a vibrant new community for both today and for future generations, where local people can live in warm, modern, affordable homes which we hope will help them achieve their true potential.” Cllr John Kaiser, executive member for planning and highways at Wokingham Borough Council, said: “The start of building work on site is always an exciting part of any project because you can see the plans physically start to take shape. “These are more than just homes for new families. Norreys community deserves this quality development.” Hill is a proven and award winning developer across London and the south east, with a lot of experience in public sector projects similar to Phoenix Avenue. It recently won eight categories in the 2015 WhatHouse awards, including the top accolade of WhatHouse? Housebuilder of the Year.

NEW COURTYARD AMONG IMPROVEMENTS AT WOODLEY LIBRARY A new enclosed 'courtyard' garden has been created at Woodley Library as part of a range of improvements. The new courtyard has been created in an area that had limited access and was in need of substantial maintenance. The space has now been cleared, a new patio area laid, and lighting and a water feature installed. Other improvements carried out through the summer include new modern lighting, which will make the library br...ighter and more welcoming and is more energy efficient. A new meeting room has also been created within the library, which will be available for hire to a wide range of users such as small local businesses and local community groups. In addition new doors from the library have been added to make the area more accessible. When summer comes the refurbished garden area will be used for a range of library events and will also be available for bookings. When the garden isn’t being used for events it will also be available for library customers to enjoy whilst they read a book. Executive member for residents’ services Cllr Pauline Jorgensen said "Our libraries across the borough are much loved by their many users and increasing in popularity. I am pleased we have been able to improve the facilities in Woodley further and hope that this will attract even more people to drop-in and see what their local library has to offer.” All the borough’s libraries are running events and activities this winter, including a reading scheme for children and young people.
