Merida is Mexico's centre of cultural sophistication. You'll find lush green plazas and colonial architecture housing trendy bars and restaurants. "I spent two weeks in NICU and one week in Emergency. Work the World staff were always happy to help. They introduced me to my supervisor at the beginning of each placement and after each day they would ask me how it went, which I found very comforting particularly after a bad day. I learned a lot from my experience, and I can tell you that if you keep an open mind, embrace the culture, watch how they deliver care, and get involved, you'll have an amazing time." University of Brighton student midwife Amelia Hilsdon, and her friend Charlotte Hackett, managed to fundraise the entire cost of their two-week midwifery placement in Tanzania. And they aren’t the only ones, as we know many of our students and professionals take on the challenge to raise the cost of their trip themselves. Read how they did it here: http://ow.ly/Anb130jbbrQ

"My time in the hospital was one that totally changed how I viewed patients once I returned to the States. Healthcare was a privilege in Pokhara rather than a right. It wasn’t uncommon to see patients turned away due to their inability to pay. If they couldn’t afford treatment, they wouldn’t receive it regardless of the consequences." Andrew is a medical student at University of Queensland and recently travelled to Peru to complete his Medical Elective. "I chose to spend four weeks across two departments: OBG and Internal Medicine. Obstetrics was an amazing experience, and it was so special to be alongside mothers from labour to delivery. I can highly recommend internal medicine—I was paired up with a different specialist each day; cardiology, respiratory, gastrointestinal, mental health, and neurology. Some of these specialists spoke English well, and the variety of medicine I was exposed to was great." Read more about Andrew's clinical placement here: http://ow.ly/aU3v30kuA9I

"My hospital placement was an enlightening experience, and it opened my eyes to what people in low resource healthcare systems had to deal with. It made me appreciate how lucky we were to have the NHS in the UK. The whole placement put things into perspective, in that it made me see things in a different light. It changed the way I worked." "I saw admissions that I had never seen in the UK, like dengue fever, pesticide poisonings, and snake and spider bites. I was, at least at the beginning, shocked to see patients sharing beds, including children sharing with adults. I was also surprised by the fact that patients had nothing to eat if food was not brought in by relatives. Much of the bedside care was the patient’s family’s responsibility..." This week our students in Anuradhapura took part in a community visit to a school in a remote part of Sri Lanka. A school health programme was being held for the children alongside a renal screening programme for adults.
Our students got to see first-hand how this healthcare facility is provided to people living in such remote areas of the country. Whilst there they also donated some stationery and sports equipment to the school.

"When I first arrived at the hospital, there was a bit of a culture shock, but it made me appreciate my own healthcare system so much more. If you’re studying medicine, I can highly recommend Oncology in Peru. Cancer is prevalent there and some of the tumours I saw were shocking as they were typically quite advanced (there are no screening programmes in Peru)." "I witnessed two emergency craniotomies (cutting open the skull to expose the brain) while in the operating theatre. One was a suspected alcohol-overdose, and the other was, sadly, a 13 month-old child. The procedures were fascinating, but confronting. It was an honour to watch the skilled surgeons work." "The hospital lacked ‘standard’ equipment like MRI machines and CT scanners, which made us realise just how much we took them for granted back home. Doctors here had to rely on their knowledge and use the core skills of history and examination to formulate diagnoses. Watching these doctors work despite feeling overwhelmed at times was a truly humbling experience." Read more about Niamh's medical experience in the Philippines here: http://ow.ly/ECYc30jbmo3

"The moment we arrived in Ghana, mum and I knew we had chosen the right place for a unique cultural experience that was totally different to anything we had experienced back at home... The lack of pain relief was something that really struck a chord, reminding us just how blessed we were to have Australia’s healthcare system." The most amazing experience! I am in my final year of my mental health nurse training. Myself and 3 others on my course spent 4weeks in Pokhara, Nepal.

The house was clean, homely and the staff there were amazing! The placement (GMC hospital) was certainly an eye-opener and I learned a lot about the differences in healthcare compared to the UK, though this was all observational from a student mental health nurse perspective.

The language barrier in the hospital was at times difficult, especially with many of the nurses, though the medics and medical students had better English and I was lucky enough to spend my time with another from my course.

The village experience was great and though the health post was quiet and the cases simple, the emersion into the culture is brilliant!!

Overall, I really recommend Pokhara! Lakeside is beautiful with lots of fun activities outside of placement time and some great bars and restaurants to visit.

My 4 week placement in Sri Lanka Anuradhapura was absolutely amazing, couldn't have picked a more beautiful country. Work the World are worth every penny and the support I received before and during my placement was fantastic. Would strongly recommend anyone thinking about doing a health care elective abroad to 100% go for it and to go with work the world. What a life changing experience :)

User

If you are thinking of doing a placement with Work the World then definitely, definitely do it!! I am a 3rd year physio student and did my final under grad placement in Lusaka, Zambia and it was incredible! It was a difficult experience in some ways and I've seen things I could never have imagined, but it was also amazing to work in such a different healthcare system, meet all the wonderful people and staff and to experience a completely different culture!

The house was beautiful and the staff at the house were fab and became a second family, I felt so at home there which was super important when you're in a place so far from home.

I could not fault work the world for our placement, it was worth every penny and I'd do it again in a heart beat!

Also, Zambia is a beautiful country and the people are lovely... the safari and Vic Falls were insane and I'd absolutely recommend Lusaka as a destination!

User

I've had such an incredible 4 weeks in the Philippines (Iloilo, Nursing elective)! Words cannot express how amazing everything has been from talking to Leah on the phone to the staff at the house to the actual placement/village experience! It's such a privilege to be able to see how many hospitals run in LIC, and made me appreciate the NHS so much more! It also taught me that we don't need to be so reliant on technology. More importantly it taught me the importance of family, how a smile and a simple 'maayong aga' can change someones day, it taught me to cherish the moments, the local people you will meet are the happiest people ever and they all have exceptional stories and struggles that they have had to overcome. Never did I think I would end up making new life long filipino friends, or end up on a local filipino magazine or that my friends would end up performing on stage! Can't wait to go back :) Feel free to send me a message if you're in two minds or want more convincing ;)

I travelled to Ghana for eight weeks during my final year of medical school and would recommend it in an instant to any healthcare students. Easy to fly to from London Heathrow or through Amsterdam and an incredibly welcoming country that was very very different to anything I could have ever experienced in the UK! My placements included time on Paediatrics, O&G and finally the ED; the highlight of the elective!

User

I travelled to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania to complete my alternative practice for my SCPHN (Health visiting) course. The Work the World staff were so friendly and helpful from start to finish. They arranged my placements so I got to see different specialities that were of interest to me. When I was at the hospital, staff were welcoming and engaging, and I got to experience so much. The Work the World house was so great, and although I went alone, I met some incredible students from around the world. I would definitely recommend doing your placement with Work the World - I really did have a once in a lifetime trip, and have come back with some amazing stories to tell family and friends.

User

I spent four weeks in Sri Lanka on placement for pharmacy. My placement was a complete success I was able to shadow at renal pharmacy, compounding reconstitution unit, medical ward, mental health, surgical store, inventory and met the chief pharmacist there.

Every weekday I was in a different section of the hospital. I got to interact with patients, staff and assist them in many cases. I really liked learning about Dengue fever and snake venom antiserum. I got to visit a local children's school and antenatal clinic, really awesome experience!!

The staff at the house were wonderful and really made my trip pain free. They gave tours, advise, walked students to placement, translated and available to students 24/7 via phone if there were any concerns or problems. It was really interesting to have fraternity of students at the house to share placement experiences with and go on weekday/weekend excursions with. I went on this trip alone, but never felt lonely or bored because of all the amazing students there to share the experience with.

Sri Lanka is rich with culture and religion. I saw many Buddhist monasteries and temples. The country is saturated with beaches, I really enjoyed visiting the turtle hatchery and doing water sports. The food is very spicy, but thankfully the staff at the house rotated between Sri Lankan and western fare every day. BBQ nights were amazing and very festive.

My third week I went to the village to shadow at an Ayurvedic clinic which practices traditional medicine. I saw the local doctor consult patients, apply herbal medicines and learned more about the local herbs he uses. Also, every day there was a different afternoon excursion arranged. This really gave me a different perspective on how Sri Lankan people view traditional medicine compared to western healthcare.

I did soo much during my four weeks in Sri Lanka and Work the World really exceeded my expectations throughout the entire trip. My experience was a once in a lifetime opportunity and I definitely plan to visit another destination with this organization in the future!!!

User

I spent a month in Lusaka, Zambia completing my final Physiotherapy placement before I graduate.

It was such a worthwhile experience and I learnt so much that I wouldn’t have done in the U.K.! I got to experience a wide variety of areas of Physiotherapy and see the differences first hand between the hospital and the NHS.

I would definitely recommend doing it!

User

I solo traveled to Pokhara, Nepal from Chicago for a month long placement in medicine. Honestly, one of the best experiences of my life. I keep finding myself wishing I could go back. Utilizing the resources of Work the World made doing an international rotation super simple. I just told them what I was looking for and they did all the work. I spent my time in the GMC ICU where I saw medical cases that we don't have in the states. The charts are written in and the medical staff communicated to me in English. Patients often spoke Nepali but the language coach in the house made learning the language so easy that I still remember it 7 months later. The staff is supportive and make navigating in a new country so simple that I would walk to placement, to downtown Pokhara (Lakeside) and home (Damside) all on my own. Beyond the medicine, the adventures are something out of fairy tales whether you paraglide, climb for views of the mountains, or take a trip down to Chitwan where you can see elephants and possibly tigers. If you are looking for an international rotation, travel through Work the World and travel solo as it makes your trip more unique and you will meet so many new people.

I have had an incredible 4 weeks in Pokhara! I am a medical student who has done 4 weeks in ED in GMC and have loved every minute. The range of cases I have seen has been brilliant and I have been able to get involved in practical skills and examining patients. I have met Nepali students and been to their teaching sessions and ran some teaching sessions for them myself. The house has been fantastic. The staff there have really made my experience so much better. The food was out of this world and the cooking lesson so much fun! Our language lessons with Prem have been hilarious and a lot more useful than I had expected! I have learnt so much more than I thought I would and have been able to understand the staff at the hospital and used iNepali myself. There has always been someone to help you arrange trips, activities and transport. It has definitely meant I have ventured further than I would have if I had been on my own! Highly recommend work the world and Pokhara!!

User

I had the best month in Iloilo in the Philippines. The Work the World team were amazing and made us feel so welcome and comfortable. They were all so friendly and could not do enough for us. The hospital experience was great and I had the privilege of working alongside some fantastic healthcare professionals. I made friends for life and explored some of the most beautiful islands the Philippines has to offer. If you are undecided about where you would like to do your insight placement, I would highly recommend Iloilo in the Philippines.

I had an amazing experience as a student nurse on elective in Kandy, Sri Lanka. The work the world team, were friendly and really helpful before departure and during my stay in Kandy. I enjoyed my placements in Kandy hospital where I went to general medicine and obs and gynae. It was interesting to observe what the health care was like and how conditions are treated to the UK.

Sri Lanka was a beautiful country and would definitely recommend going here as a student nurse! Thank you to everyone at Work the World!

I completed a 3 week pharmacy placement in Kathmandu and really loved it! The placement itself was very informative, well organised and very relevant to my degree. The house was wonderful and the staff were just brilliant—they genuinely cared about your well-being and your time in-country. Nepal was an experience I'm unlikely to forget, in the best way! Even with maximising my time in the hospital, I was able to visit Pokhara, go paragliding and bungee jumping! I was also able to squeeze in a week for the village experience which also was a great experience.

Overall, I had such a wonderful time in Nepal and would definitely recommend Work the World!

Had a very positive experience doing a graduate nurse placement in Anuradhapura Sri Lanka. The hospital placement gave me great exposure to assist in the care of patients with conditions both similar and different to what I've had the opportunity to see in Australia. Would definitely recommend Anuradhapura as it's a quiet town with cultural significance and serves as a great base for sightseeing throughout Sri Lanka. The on ground staff are so kind and helpful with everything. We made great friends from all over the world. I would recommend Work the World for any nursing student or new graduate.

Debating doing an elective healthcare experience with Work The World?? Just do it! I did my second year adult nursing placement in Iloilo, Philippines in March 2018 for 4 weeks. The Work The World staff are super friendly and extremely helpful, they are always happy to answer and questions via phone or e-mail any time. They really helped make the whole process run very smoothly. Words cannot describe how life changing the whole experience was, the hospital conditions are so limited compared to the UK and it really puts it into perspective quite how lucky we are. I completed a week in the village and I cannot recommend it enough. Not only do you get clinical experience, you also get a lot of cultural experience living with the native tribe! I could write for days about my experiences but If anyone has any questions about anything don't hesitate to contact me! :D

User

Completed my elective with Work the World in Kathmandu, Nepal. Amazing experience. Your stay is very well planned out each step of the way. All facilities at the home are top notch and super friendly and caring team. An eye opening experience to involve yourself with a healthcare system so different to those in western countries. Plenty of activities and weekend trips to make. Sean the programme coordinator was really helpful in arranging this too. Food is amazing and BBQ nights were a big hit !

A big thanks to the WTW team for making this experience a memorable one !

I completed a week in the village and I cannot recommend it enough. Not only do you get clinical experience, you also get a lot of cultural experience living with the native tribe! I could write for days about my experiences but If anyone has any questions about anything don't hesitate to contact me! :D
