451 City marks the end of its first year of tenure at NST City by inviting one of the most respected dub poets in the UK to perform at this showcase of local, national and international spoken word.
WHEN: Monday 26th November 7.45pm start (7.30pm doors) WHERE: NST City, 144 Above Bar St, Southampton, SO14 7DU PRICE: £5 / £3 open mic ... TICKETS: www.nstheatres.co.uk/whats-on/451--city Also available on the door. INFO: www.applesandsnakes.org
Featuring ROGER ROBINSON One of the most versatile and internationally respected dub poets, writing dub poetry that is a powerful mix of rhythm and socially conscious themes. He is a serious man with a great sense of humour whose lyrics are unlike most you find in modern dub poetry. Roger has performed worldwide, was chosen by Decibel as one of 50 writers to have influenced the black-British writing canon and has received commissions from The National Trust, London Open House, The National Portrait Gallery, The V&A, INIVA and Theatre Royal Stratford East. Roger Robinson is a dozen men. Or more.
JOY FRANCE Multi-award and slam winning poet, writer and all round creative who is proud to be a magnet for the gloriously weird and who engages audiences with a deft (and often daft!) use of words. Joy has gone from retirement to rap battling and has written and performed poetry for the Nationwide TV ad campaign. 'Witty and wise and with a natural talent for rhythm and rhyme, Joy France has that 'je ne sais quoi!' Tony Walsh
JAYNE EDE Jayne writes on a variety of topics from the mundane to the bizarre, taking inspiration from hip-hop artists and putting a strong emphasis on rhythm and wordplay. Expect chickens, dragonflies, sarcastic reflections and a healthy dose of putting the World to rights. She was a semi-finalist in the National 'Hammer and Tongue' poetry slam competition at the Royal Albert Hall in January 2018, and now co-hosts the local slam 'Hammer and Tongue: Solent'.
plus OPEN MIC. Limited places available for you to share your well-crafted words. Sign up at the box office from 7pm on the night.

451 City presents
DOOR-TO-DOOR POETRY by ROWAN McCABE
... When: Mon 15th October 7.45pm start Where: NST City Studio, 144 Above Bar St, Southampton, SO14 7DU Tickets: £5 / £3 open mic Info: www.nstheatres.co.uk // www.applesandsnakes.org
What do you think would happen if you knocked on a stranger's door and offered to write them a poem? Three years ago, Rowan McCabe became the world's first Door-to-Door Poet. Knocking on strangers' doors, he asks what is important to them; he then goes away and writes a poem about this, free of charge, before bringing it back and performing it on their doorstep. Through this bold and arguably stupid act, he hopes to prove that anyone in the world can enjoy poetry. Through a funny and thought-provoking mix of spoken word and theatre, Door-to-Door Poetry charts the full story of Rowan's adventures around the North East of England, including his visit to a mosque in Newcastle and his trip to Kingston Road in Stockton, the location for Channel 4's controversial documentary Benefits Street. Completely out of his comfort zone, Rowan stumbles into a series of unlikely events that question fixed notions about the world we live in. Discussing isolation and prejudice in today's society, this show asks a simple, yet vital question: Can we trust strangers?
Longlisted for 'Best Spoken Word Show' in 2018 Saboteur Awards
"A crusading optimist for humanity... highly talented with verse"- 5 stars, Broadway Baby
"A must-see"- Morning Star
Plus OPEN MIC – your chance to share your words. Sign up at NST box office from 7pm. Spaces limited.
Hosted by RICKY TART.

TO HELEN BACK
HELEN SEYMOUR presents a powerful and unique theatrical experience. Helen is a burglar. She likes breaking into hospitals. She admits you into a surreal hospital to be look-out as she sneaks around wards, x-ray rooms and cupboards to discover the bizarre, the bemusing – and the badger. Directed by HANNAH SILVA, To Helen Back analyses sickness, health and what it really means to recover. So let this one of a kind performer put a hospital around your head as you find out what’s really going on inside hers. Full of heart, dark and hope, this brave show is both funny and moving, honest and deceptive, authentic and surreal.
