About Alton Abbey
The Anglican, Benedictine Community of Our Lady & St John
Alton Abbey Description
This is the Facebook place page of Alton Abbey. Here you will find an informal history of the community in the timeline. We also use it as our principal internet photo gallery.
We have a second *personal* page on Facebook. We use that principally to publicise updates to our website and to post more light-hearted content.
At the moment the community does not access either Facebook account, with all administration left in the hands of our webmaster, who is an oblate, under the direction of the Abbot. Therefore, if you want to contact the community directly then please use the email directory on the contacts page of our website. As a courtesy, the webmaster will still forward any FB messages on your behalf.
Thanks, and enjoy. . .

Beautiful day at the Abbey, 23 degrees in the sun and so much cooler in the shade... Picture taken from the pensioners lawn looking into the woods...
Beautiful spring day or is summer already?! Getting gardens ready for next weekends open days.
Blue sky, little bit of wind on the hill, but nice and warm other than that.
The Altar of Repose on Holy Thursday: "Can you come and watch with me one hour?"
Beautiful weekend, with amazing weather... Although weather could change next week... Enjoy the weekend...
Think it's safe to say spring is here... First cut of the grass, flowers coming up and Hector appearing too!!
Did lose a tree over the pond in the last month's winds...
Usually, the Ashing Mass at the Abbey is attended by the Community, any resident guests, and about four of the regular congregation. This year, that would have been around twelve present. However, a neighbouring parish is not having a Eucharist till the evening, so a dozen people joined us who are unable to drive at night.
This garden always looks amazing even in the Spring/winter...
Two Monks, a Religious, an Oblate, a Companion, six others: Sunday Mass with hymns, and with snow on the ground outside. Job's a good un, and we met Christ in one another.
Yesterday, Abbot Giles travelled to St Mary's Church, East Grinstead in order to attend the funeral of Father Michael Shields CMP SSC, who died on 16 December 2018 at the age of 88. This good and holy priest once tested his vocation at Quarr Abbey, and later was admitted as an Oblate of Alton Abbey just a few days after Abbot Giles arrived here as a Postulant in 1966. Well done, good and faithful servant: enter into the joy of your Master.
Beautiful summers day at the Abbey
