Bideford & District Community Archive Description

Bideford and District Community Archive is a charitable organisation run by volunteers.

We have an Index of birth, death and marriage announcements contained in the Bideford Gazette, and a Maritime Index - references to captains, ships etc. Indexes to most censuses for Bideford Appledore and Northam Devon census returns for 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901. Index to Bideford, Appledore and Northam Trade Directories. Photographic survey. Oral history archive. I. G. I.

We have bound originals of Bideford Gazette from 1856 to 1978 and microfilms of this paper from 1856 to 1990 from which we have indexed both local people and local news /events up to the 1920s. This is ongoing.

The churchyards and cemeteries of Bideford, Northam and Appledore are also listed with plans showing graves and the Monumental Inscriptions.

Many more documents and information held at the Archives include World War 1 and WW2 details, old detailed maps, taped recordings of local peoples' memories of past events /people and many thousands of photographs and copies of Parish Birth, Marriage and Burial Registers prior to 1837 for Appledore, Bideford and Northam, which also included Westward Ho! .

Our opening hours are Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, from 09. 30am until noon.
