This is the magical moment one of our tiny emerald tree monitor lizards hatched and took a breath of air for the first time. 💚

Have you ever noticed that butterflies always fly in a jerky, erratic pattern? They do this because it makes it harder for their main predator, birds, to catch them! Scientists believe that a constant aerial threat makes their unpredictable flight necessary all the time.
Come and learn more about our beautiful butterflies in Butterfly Forest 🦋

Did you know that flamingos are filter feeders? They suck water in through their partly opened bill and out again using their tongue. They have a row of spines (called lamellae) along the edge of the bill to filter out their food, and can immerse their head for 20 seconds whilst doing this!

Happy #InternationalRedPandaDay!
We have two red pandas here at the Zoo - Lady Hilary and Chota. They are very skillful and acrobatic, spending most of their time in trees. See if you can spot them climbing around on your next visit!

🐔🐸❔ The Mountain Chicken is not a chicken at all. In fact, it is one of the largest frogs in the world. #MountainChickenDay
These 'giant ditch frogs' are on the brink of extinction and got their name from, well.... the fact they taste like chicken!
#ThursdayThrowback to when our most recent Mountain Chicken residents arrived at the Zoo earlier this year.

When you visit our gorillas, what is one of the first things you notice? Probably how big they are! Western Lowland gorillas are the largest living primates in the world. But did you know that we share 98% of the same DNA? #WednesdayWisdom

When you think of penguins, you probably imagine them surrounded by snow and ice. But our African penguins are a species that are found in warmer climates on the coasts of South Africa and Namibia. You can learn more about our colony at our penguin talk and feed at 3pm every day!

A campaign to stop the illegal trade in wildlife has been launched today by British and Irish zoos, aquariums, wildlife crime agencies and the government.
The illegal wildlife trade is part of an environmental crime which also includes illegal logging and is the fifth most lucrative organised crime in the world estimated to be worth up to £17billion a year.
The campaign is aimed at helping to stop the trade, has been announced by the British and Irish Association of Zoos and ...Aquariums (BIAZA).
Dr Kirsten Pullen, chief executive of BIAZA which represents 117 zoos and aquariums in Britain and Ireland, said: “Our members are uniquely placed to have a major impact in helping to put an end to this abhorrent business.
“Many are already carrying out their own initiatives that support the reporting of illegal wildlife trade activities, assisting officials in helping to identify trafficked species as well as raising awareness amongst more than 30 million visitors annually.
“As a conservation wildlife charity, we support our members in their work to protect the natural world through conservation programmes, scientific research and educating the public on actions they can take to help make a difference. This new pact will facilitate a more unified approach and enable us to have a greater impact in putting an end to the illegal wildlife trade.”
The BIAZA zoos and aquariums pact has been launched ahead of the forthcoming Illegal Wildlife Trade Conference, being hosted by the UK Government in London on 11 – 12 October 2018.
