Colston Hall Description

Colston Hall is Bristol’s largest concert hall, presenting concerts and entertainment by major names in rock, pop, jazz, folk, world and classical music, stand up comedy and light entertainment, as well as local choirs, orchestras and schools.

Our audiences have been enjoying music here since 1867 and the building remains at the heart of cultural life in the city.

---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- ----

We have 3 performance spaces at Colston Hall, the Main Hall, The Lantern and the Foyer.

Our main hall was completed in 1951, the Royal Festival auditorium undergone a number of transformations over the years. Some of the world’s biggest music and comedy stars have performed on this stage, including The Beatles, David Bowie, Elton John, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong Motorhead and Bob Dylan. The perfect acoustics in the space have also attracted the world’s leading orchestras and classical soloists. The hall houses our magnificent Harrison and Harrison Pipe organ and has a maximum capacity of 2075.

The Lantern
Situated in the oldest part of the building, The Lantern was built in 1873 and offers a programme of world, folk, jazz, acoustic and new classical music in a quirky and intimate space. In former times the venue was a theatre, and staged performances by Bristol Old Vic Theatre School alumni including Patrick Stewart and Daniel Day Lewis. The maximum capacity for this venue is 350 standing and 250 seated.

Foyer Performance Space
The new foyer is a light and airy space, perfect for our Friday and Saturday evening free performances. The foyer was built in 2009 and offers meeting and conference spaces available to hire.

Our imposing and iconic foyer has made Colston Hall an architecturally significant and striking addition to Bristol’s skyline and befits the many fantastic performers who play here. With a café bar, roof terrace, conferencing and education facilities, plus disabled access to all floors we offer a top quality experience to all our visitors.

---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- ----

Colston Hall is run by Bristol Music Trust, an independent organisation and registered charity (no. 1140898) created to develop the Hall’s artistic programme and promote music and music making in Bristol.

Launched in May 2011 Bristol Music Trust is an exciting independent venture with two distinct aims:

• The first is to manage the operations of Colston Hall; developing a diverse musical programme, leading a major capital refurbishment programme and securing its commercial success. The Hall presents a wonderful opportunity to build a diverse Music and Arts Centre for the region.
• The second aim is to drive forward music across Bristol; working in partnership with city wide organisations; leading on musical education, commissioning new works, supporting local musicians, and promoting music across all communities to build on the vibrant talent already in the city. We want the Bristol music scene to stand out with its own unique culture and internationally renowned reputation.

London producer and songwriter Jamie Isaac has been named “an unlikely heir to Sade” (The Guardian). His music melds “luscious, mood-lit R&B” (Q), electronics, soul, jazz, ambient choral melodies and hip hop to “spellbinding” effect (Dummy). Over at Crofter’s Rights, Jamie will be performing groove-laden tracks from his latest, acclaimed album and his cult-classic debut, Couch Baby – “the greatest album of its kind we’ve heard this year” (Noisey).

Chicago hip-hop brass outfit Hypnotic Brass Ensemble return to Bristol for an explosive live show. The 8 horn-playing brothers – all sons of pioneering jazz trumpeter Kelan Phil Cohran (Sun Ra’s Arkestra) – have worked with the likes of Prince, Mos Def and Gorrilaz. Raucous and red-hot, the HBE sound summons the spirit of New Orleans big-band jazz, shot through with rap, funk and hip-hop, and moments of “fervent and prayerful beauty” (All About Jazz).

Mancunian duo Virginia Wing stand at the intersection between “avant-garde synth pop” (Pitchfork) and conceptual art. Poly-rhythms and cocooning, dreamy synths combine in “equal parts spikiness and warmth” (The Line Of Best Fit). Meanwhile, Alice Merida Richards’ voice is “compelling, expressive and candid” (The Quietus) and “deployed with serious pop smarts” (The Guardian). The duo will perform fan favourites plus tracks from their latest album Ecstatic Arrow – “one of the y...ear’s most original and exciting records” (Loud and Quiet).

Some very talented musicians in the foyer last evening The Andy Christie Quartet... brilliant!!

User

Really good experience. Would definitely come back. Our 11am show got cancelled but they said we could come back in the afternoon to the 2pm show of Dick and Dom which was great. Seemed well thought out and organised. The greeters were super and wearing fun brightly coloured clothes which the kids loved. The girl with the blue glasses and guy with yellow jacket were particularly fab. So many activities for the kids to do. Well done to the organisers and those who worked on the day. Super!

User

It was our first visit and my daughter's first concert. The queue moved quickly, there were free cups of water, which was fab as it was so hot, the ticket guy explained where to go, the security were using metal detectors on everyone, which was reassuring after the Manchester attack, the usher showed us all the way to our seats and the merchandise stall and bar moved really quickly as there were loads of staff.

It was brilliant, it went so smoothly.

Great customer service at Colston Hall yesterday at the Bastille concert. Thank you to the ladies on the front desk and Connor who took great care of me. You enabled me to attend and enjoy the concert even though I am recovering from knee surgury and using crutches .

Came here to see Seal 18th Feb 2018

Fabulous !!!!!!!

Loved this venue !!!!!

Easy access to everything

Sounding was superb

Will definately be checking to see who's playing & come back !!!!!

Visited to attend Michael McIntyre work in progress last night. Although the show was brilliant as expected the seating is extremely cramped. Now yes, I am a bigger lady but not hugely, and my friend and I were very squashed between the other people. Not only that, everybody was boiling and there didn't seem to be any air con? I'd of course return but these things are an issue

User

Lovely venue and could see the stage well even when our seats were near the back. Two comments I would make were, I didn't feel the security was as high as previous comments after say the Manchester incident, a couple of weeks on, I felt the bag search inadequate as I opened my handbag and he peered in, but would have had no idea what I had in there if I was carrying anything I shouldn't. I feel it needed more like an airport, maybe a better search of people coming in. Also it was so hot in there, it needs air conditioning. It had been one of the hottest days and everyone was shouting about the heat. Apart from that I would return for a future show.

User

I have been to Colston Hall many times and i honestly love the venue and Bristol, i attended the paramore gig, was very hot but that was to be expected with a sold out gig on the hottest day of the year. My main concern is the lack of security checks when accessing the hall, no bag checks, a fast skim over with a hand held metal dector does not seam to put my mind at ease with recant events! Especially when the o2 have a full airport style scanner and bag checks. I know it causes things to move a bit slower but its best to be safe

User

We went to watch Russel Brand on Tuesday night and the gig was very good but the queue at the bar was massive during the interval (maybe an order beforehand option would be good) The heat was uncomfortable, sweat dripping off. I know it's been hot but no air con and being right at the back it was awful. You need to invest in air con! Oh and more updated toilets & more of them would be good.

User

Old and tired relic of a music venue, only seems to host the least controversial and dullest artists. Last time I saw a great gig was The Strokes back in the early noughties. My advice is to give your cash to the O2 Academy and leave this relic of a venue named after a prominent slave trader to decay and collapse.

User

It was ok; 'extravaganza' is a bit of an overstatement. Music great of course, but lights and lasers fairly tame. And far too much smoke! By the end the orchestra was almost invisible - somewhat marred the show for me. BSO are fab and Victor Aviat an entertaining and intelligent conductor.

User

I attended the 'Paramore' gig with my daughter on 21/06. The gig itself was great, stewards and staff very helpful, and venue easy to find. But I have to question the lack of 'air conditioning' at the venue!! We were sat up in the gods, on what turns out, to be the hottest day of the year, along with others sweating buckets and watching people's futile attempts to cool down while 'fanning' their ticket stubs! This is a great venue...good sound etc....but please invest in some 'air con'! I suspect I wont be the only one to complain about this.....

Has no-one commented on the disgusting behaviour of James Acaster last Friday? Ed Gamble and Abandoman were excellent, Gary Delaney did what he does, mostly stuff he's done on Mock the Week, but, as first on, he probably wasn't paid enough to write some new material. And then Acaster. Turned up very late from a previous gig on the same day, spent 20 minutes telling us how bad that gig was, in an unfunny way, appeared to be totally uninterested, and not to have any idea of what his set should be, and, when he had so obviously lost the room, fell back on the Frankie Boyle technique of isolating a single punter and abusing them and encouraging the crowd to join in. The last 15 minutes were just an embarrassment. Very bad "performance" - you should seriously consider refunding 25% of the ticket price for that. If the boy isn't able to do two 40 minute sets in a day, then he (or his agent) shouldn't be so greedy as to book two sets in a day. I am quite happy for you to post this on your review page.

User

Great to most of your security watching the G3 show last night apart from the two at the front who watched the crowd throughout and during change over only 2 in the main hall who again were the two at the front ,

Been three times this year - Henning Wehn, Kraftwerk and David Sedalris, with Stewart Lee coming up next month.

On the plus side it's a lovely venue with courteous staff and quick bar service. On the down side the seats are incredibly uncomfortable and cramped; and although seated for Kraftwerk in the summer it was like a sauna in there!

User

This was my second and probably last time at this venue. I did like it becausse of it 's great quality of sound, I knew this from my previous gig there. Attended the Kraftwerk gig, saturday 17.06 with friends of mine . The heat was unbearable, have you never heared of airco, Colston Hall??

We were all packed like sardines on small hard seats in this too hot place. Whilst trying to enjoy the gig, which I luckily did, I was thinking at only one thing: OUT, Fresh air!!

Don't know if I make the travel again to see a gig at this venue!

User

Hey Colston Hall! Your ticket protection company is an absolute joke! I will NEVER be using it again! And I'll be advising everyone I know its more hassle than it's worth! A friend of mine can't make a gig tomorrow coz she's ill and the refund process is almost impossible! They require a signed doctors note and proof nothing has changed in the two months prior to the event!! Completely ridiculous!!! Seperate company or not they are representing your venue!

User

Came here last night for the first time in several years, as was unfortunately put off by having to leave a Katie Melua gig early because of the unbearable heat in the venue (people standing in fire exits/corridors to cope; it was Sep/Oct) - management back then advised air con wasn't in that year's refurb phase. Well nothing's changed, it was unbearably hot in there at Suzanne Vega gig which detracted from the enjoyment of the music. The staff are great, bar efficient, great amount of ladies loos (no queue!), fab view from seats but I just don't get how a venue can advertise itself as a major international venue with no air con!

REF: Tickets for jools Holland-Sat 9th DEC

Absolutely ripped off. Jools holland Colston Hall Bristol. Viagogo the First site I was directed to and only 4 tickets left. I assumed this to be the venue's official site. I would have thought that Colston Hall would have the facility to automatically pop up first. As a 70yr old newcomer to this sort of booking I assumed everything legit and promptly bagged 2 tickets quickly so as not to be disappointed. At the payment stage the tickets were almost double the price stated and a warning of no guaranty of a complete refund for cancellation.Does this sound familiar to anyone. My wife would have been so disappointed not to go so I completed the transaction. But wait, it gets worse. On arrival at my seats they have been double booked. we had EXACTLY the same Colston Hall Ticket type as the people seated. They just got there first. After a bit of a wait and the show already started we were offered 2 other seats right at the rear of the balcony. HOT SWEATY and APPALLING sound. Hard to breath with no air-con.Disappointed frustrated and angry. No apology or offer of redress or compensation.

incidentally we were told that Viagogo had gone bust. Are Colston Hall on top of this sort of behaviour.

I will send a copy of this review to Colston Hall and wait for a response.
