About Cornwall'S Regimental Museum

Bodmin Keep, is an original army keep and has buzzed with military activity for generations. Now a museum, it inspires and connects young and old visitors with stories of ordinary soldiers doing extraordinary things.

Cornwall'S Regimental Museum Description

CornwallŌĆÖs Regimental Museum is a friendly and fun museum in Bodmin, Cornwall. We hold all kinds of events and activities on selected dates all year round, and welcome all visitors, including groups, children, and even well behaved dogs!

We are recognised as probably the finest Military Museum in the South West of England. As well as seeing our collections, come and explore our home, Bodmin Keep, which is a Grade II listed building, constructed at the time of the Napoleonic threats. Bodmin Keep was the home of Cornwall's Military life for over 150 years, and still has original features such as the great stone staircases and original fireplaces. You can even experience our Cold-War era military police cell!

Covering a period between 1702 until 2007, the museum's displays tell the stories of the Cornwall Volunteers and Volunteer Militia, the Duke of CornwallŌĆÖs Light Infantry (DCLI), and we are extremely proud and honoured to be home to the National Collection of the Light Infantry (LI).

A fine collection of medals, weapons, uniforms, paintings and artefacts (as well as a few surprises in the collection! ) are clearly displayed and will appeal to all age groups, enhancing and bringing to life much of the countryŌĆÖs history covered in the National Curriculum. The museum has an extensive library and archive and a team of research volunteers who are proud to help over 300 families per year discover their military family history.

Bodmin Keep is located on Lostwithiel Road, 100 yds from the Bodmin and Wenford Railway which was built to service the Barracks. Visitors to the steam railway receive up to 40% off museum entry with a valid ticket. For other admission rates and concessions please see our website.

We are a dog friendly museum!

We visited yesterday as I had always wanted to as I have been told that we have family medals on there and it was so much more than I had expected it was outstanding. I took my whole family including my mum, my 12 year old and my 6 year old and they all loved it and talked all night about it. We will definitely be using our annual passes again. What amazing value for money, thank you.

User

We took our 9 year old daughter and had an excellent visit. This museum is very well laid out. The staff are friendly and informative. Very educational and there is plenty to occupy children and adults alike. Well worth a visit.

User

This museum is stunning and so well run,They have so many exhibits from The medals of Harry Patch to a big chunk of the Berlin Wall. There is a reading room, research facilities and best of all its dog friendly. A great museum and a credit to our county of Cornwall.

User

Thank you Cornwall's Regimental Museum, we visited this morning and loved it. So interesting! My favourite was the 1914 standard issue Army biscuit! My son loved the tommy gun. Also amazing to get to touch a piece of the Berlin Wall.

Staff were very friendly and free entry was amazing! Would recommend to anyone.

User

Spent a lovely afternoon here with my daughter. Staff were very friendly and helpful.

User

Small and compact but packed with loads of excellent exhibits. Not a dusty boring museum!

Friendly and helpful staff and a good selection of ice creams.

Well worth a visit. Eleven out of ten.

User

Really interesting little museum that's packed with fascinating treasures that highlight the history of the DCLI rgts. It has a very personal feel and includes a lovely tribute to Harry Patch. Very moving last room upstairs underpins the tragic futility of wars.

Lest we forget - but when will we ever learn!

Definitely recommend a visit!

User

People should be more aware this is here. A lovely look at the military history of Cornwall. The staff were lovely and my children loved playing the bugal. Dog friendly too which helps loads :) thank you for a lovely day. Indoors too (for those who need somewhere to go if the rain in out)

User

I visited with my 4 and 5 year olds, we had a brilliant time! They loved making medals, playing the bugles, looking at the exhibits, shooting the wooden guns, dressing up and doing the quiz. Very friendly staff and a warm welcome. Would recommended it!

User

Had a great time with the boys here this afternoon. The quiz and the bugles kept them occupied :-)

Some of it I remember from when my grandma Greenstreet used to take us when we were small

Worth a visit.

User

Great place to visit, took my 6 year old army mad nephew for the afternoon and he loved it, especially the gun handling. The staff were all very nice and took time to explain everything. The highlight for my nephew was being able to hold the guns and the man was really good explaining them to him. Lots to see and do and we will definitely come back with the years pass as we are fairly local.

User

Great place to visit for all ages, the staff are lovely and welcoming and it's a dog friendly place ’┐Į

User

Fantastic evening entertainment put on by the museum last night for families. We were put on a secret mission which took us around the museum, looking for clues and breaking some Russian code. Very well orchestrated. My children loved it! Thank you. Will definitely be returning as there was much to see & do.

User

Excellent museum with great displays in a fine old military barracks.

We've past a few times over the years and my eldest son was the one who said can we go in so we did and we were most impressed.

If your in Bodmin or Cornwall in general and the weather isnt playing ball then it's well worth popping along to and the Bodmin Steam Railway is right beside it so there is 2 things to do in one day ’┐Į’┐Į

User

Decided to visit to see if any information was available to help my son with his sixth form project on his great grandfather who served in WW1. It was a long drive from Somerset but the welcome was amazing! It was great to meet people with such a passion for history and gathered some great background info for my son's project. Many thanks to Hugo and the rest of the staff for their time. We will be back another day when we are in the area.

User

Brilliant place lots to see. It's one of those hidden gems. Not expensive great value. Includes an annual pass. Drive past it every day, really glad I took the time to go in with my 10 year old. Thank you.

User

This is a great little museum and we were delighted to spend time in it on a rainy day in Bodmin. The Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry served all over the world between 1702-1959. We loved the section on their role at the Siege of Lucknow, as we are frequent travellers to India. Presentation is very good and we are definitely coming back! All exhibits are in excellent condition.

User

It was a surprise birthday visit, which we thoroughly enjoyed.it ,Oliver 7 my grandson suggested to Lyra his mum and Anne his gran that they take me there as he knew I lived through the war years and is always asking me about it after his visit to your museum with his school ,my great granddaughter Eleanor was also with us .so we had a very interesting time.Thankyou. My dad served in both world wars and was a prisoner of war in the last one.

User

A fascinating building housing a great collection with some fascinating individual stories of soldiers in the Regiments represented and some interesting artefacts on display. Particularily liked all the Regimental silver and the Lucknow siege stories. Well worth a visit.
