A few weeks ago we welcomed the wonderful Emma into the team!
Emma is a registered veterinary nurse who qualified with a distinction this month (woop woop 🎉). She is mum to two cheeky chihuahuas, Google and Biscuit. Emma has a keen interest in in-patient care and laboratory. Make sure you say hello when you next see her in practice.

Environmental enrichment is about bringing new elements into your pets' life to make their environment more interesting and provide safe ways for them to display their natural behaviour. There is much you can do at home to enrich your cats' environment: 🐾 Provide resting and hiding spots such as shelves, cat trees and cardboard boxes for them to snuggle or escape if they feel the need to. 🐾 Provide vertical or horizontal scratching surfaces as well as a wide r...ange of toys. Rotating toys will help keep your cats interested in playing. 🐾 Another great idea is to hide their food/snacks around the house or use a feeding toy so your cat can explore and "hunt" his meal. 🐾 If you have more than one cat, make sure you have multiple resources (such as food and water bowls and litter trays), so all cats can have individual access to them. Even small steps towards environmental enrichment can have a significant impact on your cats' welfare, reducing and preventing stress and other health problems as well as unwanted behaviours such as marking, soiling and aggression.

Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) causes decreased immunity in cats. Even though it has similarities with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), FIV can only infect cats. Cats usually get infected through bites and fight wounds caused by other infected cats. Although infected queens can pass FIV on to their kittens, this is a condition more common among free-roaming male cats that are not neutered. To prevent the spread of the virus, it is recommended that FIV -infected ca...ts are kept indoors. The infection usually causes mild clinical signs in the beginning, and, in many cases, it can be followed by a period where the cat shows no signs of disease. However, as their immunity decreases, they may start having a poor coat, loss of appetite, recurrent infection of the eyes, respiratory tract, skin and bladder as well as persistent mouth inflammation. FIV affects every cat differently, and in most cases, cats can live long, happy lives with proper veterinary assistance!
