Incredibly exciting developments in the treatment of equine arrhyhtmias from Professor van Loon and the team at the University of Ghent in Belgium. They have succesfully ablated the ectopic focus within a horse's heart, restoring normal rhythm. This procedure is routine in humans with atrial fibrillation but has not been possible in horses due to their large size, until now.... This will revolutionise the treatment of equine heart disease, in particular atrial fibrillation.

Shocking Stuff! For horses with atrial fibrillation, an abnormal heart rhythm, treatment can involved transvenous electrocardioversion, TVEC. The heart is shocked back to normal rhythm using small wires placed into the heart. This is done under general anaesthesia and has fewer side effects than the traditional medical treatment of this condition with quinidine sulphate. TVEC can be undertaken with our team of equine medicine and cardiology specialists at Langford.

Do you own a teenage/ older horse or pony? If so, make sure you're up to speed with the signs of Equine Cushing's Disease (Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction).
This great new website shows you how to recognise the signs, explains how we would diagnose the condition and how it is treated.
