What is massage?
Massage is defined as the manipulation of superficial and deep muscles, using various techniques, to promote the body's own ability to heal.
How massage may help your horse
-Improve appearance of coat
-Increase circulation to skin, improving skin tone and suppleness
-Improve lymphatic drainage
-Increase flexibility of muscles
-Improve conformation and gait
-Help with venous blood return
-Improve range of movement to the limbs
-An improved performance during riding
Why stretches are important
Performing stretches on your horse helps to lengthen muscle fibres to reduce tension on joints and tendons. This improves the horse's range of motion to aid muscle balance, improves posture and movement quality.
What happens during a massage?
Veterinary permission should be sought before any massage is carried out. I will then perform a static and dynamic evaluation to assess gait and conformation. Tack may also be checked if indicated. A full massage and stretch routine will be carried out tailored to suit your horse's needs.
Factors that may affect gait
-Pain or injury within a limb or associated structure will cause the horse to alter its movement to reduce stress and pain in a particular area. By doing this the horse is likely to put strain on other areas, most commonly the back.
-Its important to have your horses saddle checked to ensure it is suitable for your horses use and body shape. If the saddle tree is too narrow it can cause pinching of the nerves along the back, poor limb rotation and muscular pain. If the tree width is too wide, while the horse is being ridden, the entire saddle may rock from side to side, or the back half of the saddle may twist to one side or the other.
-A rider that sits to one side of the saddle, rides with uneven stirrup lengths, or rides with a twisted pelvis will cause the horse to alter its position to stay balanced. Over time this can cause conformation problems and tightness within muscles.
