About Fareham Sailing And Motor Boat Club

A friendly and social club in Portsmouth Harbour with access to the Solent. We sail and motor anything that floats and have fun on the water and ashore.

Fareham Sailing And Motor Boat Club Description

Yachts. We have a large number of cruising yachts and motor boats in the club who enjoy a full racing programme. We also run social weekends away as well as day trips such as the 'Rush to Ryde'. There is an active cross channel group for the more adventurous.

Dinghy sailing and luggers. No visit to Fareham Creek is complete until you have enjoyed the 'red sails in the sunset' on a summer evening. The club's very own class, the Fareham Lugger, sail year round. Members can borrow club luggers and other dinghies.

Social. When going afloat is either undesirable or impossible we have an all year social programme, centred around the all important bar and clubhouse.

A glorious morning on Easter Sunday saw the second set of races for the Kipps Cup. Again only 6 luggers were out, though not the same six - Robin Yates and Bob Close couldn't make it, but Chris Hare and John Neal were out instead. Like last time, the wind was very light, coming from the NE on arrival, but just before the start, the sea breeze kicked in from the S/SE and a quick rethink of the course was required, for a beating start down the creek. Some excellently timed star...ts, with John Herbert just pulling ahead into the lead, determined to build on his three firsts from the previous races, with Paul Limburn hot on his heels. Chris Hare, John Neal, Kev Abbott and Phil Walden not far behind. The placings remained the same until John was slowed by some fishing lines on the far shore and Paul, who stayed mid channel, sneaked ahead. John caught him again on the last mark and it was a tussle between them right to the line, when Paul just got an extra puff of wind and won by a nose! By the second race, the wind had strengthened a bit, so a slightly longer course was set. John Neal decided he had sailed enough, so did not compete. Chris Hare made a cracking start, with John Herbert close behind. By the first mark, Paul had pulled into the lead, with John close behind and Kev, Phil and Chris in a bunch together. John managed to overhaul Paul but those two were well ahead of the other three, finishing John, Paul, Phil, Kev and Chris. For the last race, Dick Kipps (the cup's originator) decided to mix it up a bit and announced this would be a pursuit race, starting from the pontoon. Phil would set off first, then Chris 17secs behind, followed by Kev 52secs behind and Paul and John 3:02 and 3:09 minutes behind respectively - a slightly different perspective, playing catch up for a change! Chris Hare won (a bottle of scotch) with Phil, John, Paul and Kev following him home. John Herbert won the Kipps Cup, with an impressive 4 firsts and a second, Paul Limburn second (1 x 1st, 4 x 2nd) and Phil was third (2x3rd, 1x4th, 1x5th) (possibly tied with Robin Yates?). All entrants received an Easter Egg!

Sunday 7th April saw the first three races for the Kipps Cup (there are another 3 races on Easter Sunday). Earlier there had been a moderate, spiky, NE wind blowing, but as the sun started to break through the cloud, the wind died and then by the start of the race was filling in as a light Southerly and there was a strong spring tide still flooding. Six luggers took to the water and initially were struggling to tack against the tide. Good tacking technique was essential in th...e light airs and John Herbert took the lead, making it look easy with Paul Limburn and Robin Yates (Sail 44) keeping up the pressure just behind and Phil Walden, Bob Close and Kevin Abbott a few boat lengths away. The wind gradually increased during the race and so did John's lead! He took line honours with Paul, Robin, Phil and Kevin following - Bob Close retired.
With more wind and less tide for the second race, a slightly longer course was set. Paul took advantage of this and made a cracking start in mid channel, instead of keeping to the far shore, but a slight mistake running down towards an incorrect second mark meant John was able to sneak through into the lead again. Although Paul quicly corrected his course, he couldn't quite catch John again and the rest of the fleet were also in close contention throughout. Another first for John, with Paul, Phil, Robin, Kevin and Bob following on.
The wind had gone round to more SE for the third race and the tide was beginning to ebb, but the same course was kept, although there was less tacking required. Kevin made a much better start and was in the lead for a little while, but John and Paul were close on his heels and finally overtook him on the run from the first to second mark, with Robin close behind. The wind was dying away, so the course was shortened to just one lap. John and Paul were a close first and second again, with Robin, Kevin and Phil not far behind. Bob struggled with the light wind and decided to retire. Again some good close racing, though it would have been nice to see a few more boats out.

The lugger racing over the weekend 23rd/24th March was for the prestigious Roughay Bowl, consisting of 6 races with two discards. In spite of the grey, overcast conditions on Saturday, there were still 11 boats out, which was great. The wind was generally light, Force 2-3, mainly from the N to NE. (See photos for course). There were some good close beating starts, with the keenest sailors jockeying for position and clear air on the line - it made it fun to watch and see who ...
