This week’s ‘Focal Friday’ we are looking at a very interesting lens from Samyang (@samyanglensglobal) the ‘Samyang XP 50mm F1.2’ and the ‘Samyang 50mm T1.3 AS UNC CS lens’. We’ve been interested in potentially investing into a new 50mm lens for a while, but we’re unsure if to invest into the cine glass side or stills glass. Here are a few advantages and disadvantages of both lens. Both these lens are very low T and F stop, so each are extremely good for both motion capture a...nd stills in lowlight and fast moving environments. The cine lens is specifically aimed more at smaller film cameras using APS-C sensors, where by even though the XP lens is primarily aimed at photographers, it still supports video cameras right up to 8K sensor size which means RED (@reddigitalcinema) cameras are on the table then. The disadvantage to this lens though, is that unlike the Cine 50mm, the stills XP lens isn’t de-clicked, meaning T-stop adjustments would be noisy, and a lot less smooth/fluid in adjustments also. If you are concerned about weight distribution, the cine lens wins hands down, weighing in at a maximum of 400g! Compared to the XP lens which weighs triple that! at 1200g. So run and gun film rigs could get very heavy very quick if using the XP lens. We could go on and on but what’s your thoughts on these lens? Which would you go for? ‘Focal Friday’ is starting off this year a bit late, but nevertheless the first lens to grace the stage for 2018, is one we saw at BSC Expo 2018 the other week, the new Tokina 18mm Vista Prime lens (@tokinacinemausa), one of the new Vista T1.5 Prime series. These new lenses feature a huge 46.7mm image circle, making them compatible with nearly every motion picture camera, including VistaVision. The new Vista series are all the exact same size and gear position for easy set up... and workflow, with an ultra sharp image with nearly zero image breathing during focus pulling. This 18mm on display was currently the only one in the UK!
