About Finch Foundry - National Trust

Finch Foundry is the last working water-powered forge in England, we're located in Sticklepath, just off the A30 near Okehampton. Come and see and experience the sights, sounds and smells of a Victorian forge!

Finch Foundry - National Trust Description

Set amid beautiful Dartmoor countryside in the village of Sticklepath, this last remaining water-powered forge in England gives a unique insight into village life in the 19th century.
In its heyday the foundry made 400 tools a day, including sickles, scythes and shovels for West Country farmers and miners.

We are open today and tomorrow (1 and 2 December). Our demonstrations and talks will take place as normal and most of our site is indoors, so plenty to do on a wet day. Perhaps you would like to indulge in some retail therapy in our shop - we have 20% off ladies accessories at the moment. Or just drop in for coffee and cake in our tea-room. Open 11am - 3pm. Free parking.

This year Finch Foundry will be staying open at weekends throughout November and December up until Christmas. We'll be offering our usual talks and demonstrations and our blacksmith will be at work in the forge. There's a range of festive goods available in the shop as well as lots of ideas for Christmas gifts. The tea-room will be serving hot drinks and warming soup to keep out the cold, plus cream teas and a selection of tasty cakes. We're just off the A30 near Okehampton and easy to find. Free car park.

St Clement is the patron saint of blacksmiths. Join us on Saturday 24 November to celebrate with blacksmiths from far and wide that will be taking part in competitions and demonstrating their skills. In addition there will be a craft fair in the gallery, morris dancers, mulled apple juice and all sorts of big bangs and fun. Admission and parking is free. There will be the opportunity to try St Clement's Curd in our shop, which has a wide range of items suitable for Christmas gifts and the tea-room will be serving drinks, light meals, plus cream teas and cakes.

We are known for our forge, our large machinery and our waterwheels, but our garden is also lovely. Check out these vibrant autumn colours in the garden at the moment.

Our 'Women and Water Power' exhibition is available to see until the end of October. This reflects the contribution two Victorian women made to the Finch Foundry business when their husband's died and they had to take over running things.

If you have recently visited Finch Foundry you may have seen our reproduction tool catalogues on display, sadly two have gone missing. These catalogues were reproduced at our expense for the enjoyment of our visitors, they have no collector value so if you have these please return them.
