At one time amalgam was the most commonly used material available for the placement of fillings. Composite (tooth colored) fillings were developed in the 1970s, however they were not a strong as amalgam & discolored quickly making for a short lifespan & requiring regular replacement. Development continued making composite fillings now stronger & more durable than ever. Unlike amalgam, composite does not contain mercury which over time can discolor the surrounding tooth. As composite comes in a range of different shades it is color matched to blend in with the patients teeth resulting in a natural, unrestored apperance.

This is a prime example of why it is important that dental radiographs are taken. Circled is decay which has developed beneath a filling that had been placed some time ago. Due to the site of the decay it is impossible to see this without a radiograph. If this patient had attended regular examinations this decay would have been picked up in the early stages, however she was not thus resulting in this tooth requiring root canal treatment & further restoration.
