About Grain Barge

Climb on board and discover one of the city’s best-loved gems. Soak up unique views of the harbour, enjoy delicious food, sample our extensive range of drinks or hire our event space in the Hold Bar for your private party.

Grain Barge Description

Grain Barge started life as an engineless transport barge that carried barley and wheat from Bristol to Cardiff, across the Severn Estuary. Built in 1936 by the Charles Hill shipyard, the barge is now moored in Hotwells, opposite its original berth and near to Brunel’s ss Great Britain.

The boat was bought and refitted in 2007. The new interior uses reclaimed and recycled materials that reflect the boat’s industrial heritage.

Today, Grain Barge is a relaxed and friendly bar /restaurant with spectacular views across Bristol harbour and the iconic ss Great Britain. Serving fresh, locally-sourced dishes and a range of craft beers, ciders, wines and coffees, this unique venue also hosts a programme of live music and comedy from its intimate Hold Bar. Relax below deck and enjoy panoramic views of the river from the light, bright restaurant /bar or sit up-top and watch river life glide past.

Closing our outdoor stage for Harbour Festival at Grain Barge is The Man and The Lake with their wild, poetic, uproarious and anthemic gypsy folk. What a way to end what's sure to be a glorious weekend!

The Rumble-O's / SATURDAY 8pm : Taking their cues from Tarantino’s surf selections, Joe Meek’s New World, Budd and Bizet, The Rumble-O’s project their intergalactic instro’s into the heart of ‘62 and return aboard Dick Dale’s reverb tank. They blend high energy, authentic sixties sounds with a contemporary edge.

Shōun Shōun play unflinching, atmospheric, minimal post-punk channeling the spirit of Marlene Dietrich and Siouxie Sioux with a certain velvet elegance. And guess what!? - they are one of the many acts playing our stage for Harbour Festival at Grain Barge

News just in... well, actually it's been on the cards for some time... finally we can announce that our old chum DJ Cactus County will be joining us again for Harbour Festival at Grain Barge.
However, in this heat, it's no wonder that he's looking a little parched. Hopefully he'll have rehydrated in time for his (legendary) MC and DJ action throughout the whole weekend here at Grain Barge. Get ready for his skillful linkage between the acts with oddball musical selections and even odder (we think brilliant) vocal thoughts on the day's progress.

We visit the Barge whenever in Bristol. Excellent location, service, choice of beer and food. Highly recommended.

User

Views over the river and SS Great Britain with a nice pint of Bristol Beer Factory. Enough said

User

Superb steak, just the best chips ever, excellent service, real nice place, Tip jar was tacky, should of made it Corbin not Trump! It was pretty empty!!!

User

Proper food all made and cooked on site. Great views and very versatile with three decks. Ideal for a glass of wine on a rainy Sunday or a party/wedding below decks. Nice people too.

User

Our 2nd visit to this venue for a gig/party in the lower deck has confirmed that the staff are lovely, the space is well designed/laid out, and the steak I had was perfectly cooked!

Multi functional- great venue!

User

Loved the music a real buzzy place staff helpful. A lovely location to have a drink and watch the world go by on the waterway. 45s playing fantastic band would recommend . Balloon festival near by so balloons flying overhead magical

User

Love the beer and food too. View from main deck at night is wonderful

User

It's situated in one of the city's most auspicious spots on the harbour opposite the SS Great Britain!

User

I loved the chicken and chorizo pie and I also loved the steak, the cider was quite nice too. I hope you love the sound from the speakers I just repaired for you. Enjoy!

User

I could literally live here. The boat is awesome and such warm and friendly place to be. I loved the hot chocolate it was one of the best ive ever had and i had the caramel waffle with ice cream and that was to die for. Next time im in bristol im definitely going back.

User

User

Great food friendly staff nice to sit and watch the boats go by or relax on a settee in the sun love the'herb' deck upstairsbeen going here for years and never disappointed!!

User

Customer service par excellence. After a double-booking error involving the downstairs bar last night, the management and the entire team pulled out all the stops to make sure our night wasn't ruined. Thoroughly recommend. They turned around what could have been disastrous. Go and enjoy wonderful food and views, and the most lovely staff in Bristol.

User

Brilliant for a great view, lovely bar food and friendly and attentive staff. Had a cracking fish finger sarnie and hubbys steak was great. Lovely place

User

It was a good lunch with good food and service! But, I am Coeliac and our dear friend took the time out of her busy schedule to check if the gravy would be gluten free for me when she made the booking. Sadly it was not on the day:(. Chef did make a leek jus for me but it was not what I had expected. My friend was very disappointed as was I!

User

I've always loved the Grain Barge, the food, the drink, the views. Have been going for years. Tad disappointed to be told I'd have to pay £1 for extra gravy on my roast when I had an inadequate amount to start with! It's the small things that keep customers happy...

We stopped in for lunch yesterday after a hot walk round the harbour. We sat downstairs (upstairs on deck/outside was packed out) and were grateful for the air conditioning. I had the fish finger sandwich; the bread was actually a very chunky - but tasty - crunchy roll, so maybe call it ‘fish finger bun’? There was no way to eat it as a sandwich! My husband had the burger which he enjoyed.

I think we’ve had a wider choice of menu to choose from here in the past. We’d call by again but the experience didn’t leave me feeling that we’d specifically head that way.

I don’t suppose the loos will ever be great as they are in the bowels (pardon the pun!) of the boat but they are very claustrophobic and brighter lighting might help; they seemed clean enough.

User

I found the food only to an ok standard for the price I paid and the lemonade was a bit flat, however the staff were very courteous and helpful and the place was clean in a great location.

User

Was very disappointed mainly with the attitudes of staff very stand offish and abrupt food lovely but anything we asked for seemed to be to much bother great location just not great people skills
