History of Greenbank

Greenbank Pool was a gift to the people of Street from Alice Clark in 1937. The town's prosperity came from the Clark family firm of shoemakers, and the present-day headquarters of Clarks is still based in Street, close to the Pool and the Clarks Factory Shopping Village. Much of the housing adjacent to the Pool was originally built for factory workers and before the Pool was built the local men and boys used to swim naked in the nearby River Brue. Alice Clark was a strong supporter of womens rights and left money in her will indicating that she wished a pool to be built so that the women and girls would have somewhere to swim.

The Pool is a registered charity (no 304645) held in trust and administered by a management committee. Like Britain's other remaining open air pools Greenbank runs at a loss. A grant from Street parish council is gratefully acknowledged, in recognition of which an extra discount is available to Street residents on early purchases of season tickets.

Recent changes:
2013 has seen more work 'behind the scenes' to replace the main pool pumps and to replace the control box for the spash area. A 'taster day' at the start of the season was great fun.

In 2011 the modern poolside windows and doors were replaced to reinstate the original look of the pool frontage. An extension to the chemical store much improved the manual handling of drums.

For 2010 the entrance turnstiles were replaced after a long search for a modern design that would be in sympathy with the Pool's heritage.

2008 saw the launch of the "Oasis" refreshment kiosk with its attractive new frontage in pastel colours.

2006 introduced a new entry system for season ticket holders based on a credit-card style swipe card. Disabled access was improved, a new Pool blanket is helping to conserve heat overnight, and the Pool hand-rails were replaced in stainless steel. Changes to the pipework bringing water into Greenbank made the supply more robust and eliminated contamination risks.

2005 saw the refurbishment of the changing areas completed, including new disabled facilities and hot showers.

In 2004 the changing room refurbishment started with the mens & disabled area. The Pool building was also listed for the first time (notes from the schedule are reproduced here)

2003 saw the installation of a splash area - an exciting new attraction that has been a big hit with children and enabled the Pool to cope with the extra numbers of visitors during very hot weather.

May bank holiday is 10am opening. Back to midday weekday opening from 8th May until half term week!! What a gorgeous weekend!! ☀️❤️🏊🏼‍♂️

User

One "short" note on parking before the Greenbank Heated Open Air Swimming Pool season begins. Summer rates in Greenbanks small car park start from 5th May and the cheapest ticket is £3 for two hours We would recommend any pool regular visitors that are uncomfortable with a 10 minute walk or cannot walk or cycle to the pool to purchase a Parking Permit from MDC (link and all terms here...http://www.mendip.gov.uk/…/4820/ Greenbank-Swimming-Pool-Car…). There are also, however, ov...er 1000 (cheaper) parking spaces in Street, one directly opposite the Pool and all within a flat 10 minute walk of the Pool. Please respect our neighbours and use the official Mendip DC car parks where possible. www.mendip.gov.uk/CHttpHandler.ashx?id=16 738&p=0 Finally, until mid May there is a little disruption to bus routes around Leigh Road and along the High Street. Again, please be patient and considerate if there is a temporary build up of traffic.

Millfield Swimming Pool kindly put together this video clip to celebrate a successful partnership and to thank Greenbank Pool for the early autumn hire. Some great aerial shots of the pool. Thank you Millfield! https://youtu.be/3390iECbsQk

Unfortunately (for us), Millfield Pool's works are almost complete, their pool is almost full and their staff will soon be heading backwards up the road to prepare for their reopening. It is very likely our 'members only' bonus swims will stop on October 10th, next Tuesday. Keep watching here and asking at the pool for confirmation. It's been a lovely end to our 80th season, we hope you have taken advantage and enjoyed the laned sessions. Let us know if you'd like to see more of this in future seasons or you prefer to enjoy the pool in a more relaxed manner!!

User

If you're a 2017 adult season ticket holder and haven't yet taken advantage of a late season swim (made possible by Millfield Swimming Pool's hire of Greenbank Pool) head on down and enjoy the mild weather! These 'Public' sessions are as follows until notified Mon; 1430-1530 Tue; 1430-1530 Wed; 1145-1245... Thu; 1430-1530 Fri; 1430-1530

Don't forget todays late season swim is a little earlier, 1145 to 1245. Back to 1430 tomorrow. Only available to current 2017 adult season ticket holders this time round but we're looking with interest at how popular it is.

User

Today's one hour public swim session is back at 1430. Apologies for yesterday's confusion but as of next week the Wednesday session will be a little earlier, from 1145 to 1245.

User

Following Millfield schools first swim session at Greenbank around 20 regular adult season ticket holders took advantage of the open pool and lane ropes for an 80th anniversary bonus swim. Good to see so many of you taking advantage. If you are interested, take your card down tomorrow and check it out (1430-1530). All the best, Greenbank Mgmt team. #millfieldswimmingpool

If you are a current 2017 adult season ticket there is a chance to keep using Greenbank for a few more weeks while Millfield are hiring it. Between 1415 and 1545 on weekdays there is a gap for our supporters to keep using the pool. Pool itself is open from 1430-1530 only with limited access to changing facilities either side. Turn up ready to swim at 1425 each day with your season ticket and id and be sure to be changed and dressed again by 1545. This should allow a full h...ours swimming if you want to. Thanks all for your continued support!! Oh, and to keep things interesting, lane ropes will be in place for this session!!

We are very pleased to announce we are supporting Millfield Schools swim programme while their own pool is undergoing major works to the roof and lining! The Millfield elite swim squad will train twice daily at Greenbank for approximately 7 weeks. We are even more pleased to announce that this means we can offer a very limited additional 'bonus' swim session to our current (2017) adult season ticket holders only. This session will be on weekdays from 2.30 to 3.30 pm between... the two Millfield squad swims. Please enquire in the pool office and read the poster on the social room or email secretary@greenbankpool.co.uk for more information or to express your interest/give feedback. Again, this is a trial of late season swimming and is only available to 2017 adult season ticket holders. We hope all our family members enjoy the last week of the 2017 season and we all look forward to seeing you in 2018!!

We are back to midday opening every day from Monday 4th September so please don't turn up too early in the back to school week!! Last day for the 2017 season is Sunday 10th and don't forget, following our end of season fun, we will close a little earlier at 6pm. Enjoy the last week and a bit!!

Our family had a fantastic day, lovely and clean pool and grass area, the prices in the oasis cafe were very reasonable and the staff were lovely. I would definitely recommend this place to all my friends/family.

A great place to take the kids.

User

Me and company have been here a few times this summer and really enjoy it and will definitely be back. The only thing that spoilt it for us was two young teens deliberately swimming in front of my daughter and friends so that they could not dive in and making rude comments at them. They were not accompanied by an adult so I guess they were local. We did tell staff and they were very helpful and kept a close eye on the situation.

User

Beautiful swimming pool with well trained staff who create a safe and fun environment for all ages.

User

Used to come here years ago loved it. However came here today. Ask lifeguards a question miserable as sin! Constantly blowing whistle for no reason. Look down nose at you. Daughter allowed on slide for 3 hours then told by lifeguard not allowed as 8 and it's under 8! Really. Would be lovely again if changed all lifeguards and shopworkers. Bring back happy/smily staff

User

Having been and loved it previously ! shame about the staff shocking need some training . A really disappointed son who was told to swim two lengths to be told he still wasn’t allowed to swim in the pool
