Hdl Food & Culture Description

Hi there, I'm Hattie a 22 year old English Literature graduate and avid procrastinator from Southampton.

This is a place for me to go on small cultural adventures and explore some of my greatest passions in food, travel and experience. Cooking is what I love to do, but I try and devote any time I can to being creative and learning new things. My life right now is quite literally an open book and I am eager to scribble on every inch of every page - be it with recipes, opinion pieces or just telling a story. At the moment, my two life ambitions are to write stuff about food and have a bengal cat - but that all may change over the next few years!

Thanks for reading,
HDL x

I popped along to the pre-launch tasting menu at Southampton's hottest new restaurant, Dhaba59! 🌶
Read on to find out why you should make this the next place you dine out in Southampton.

Hey, it's me again!
If you'd noticed that it's been a while since I've graced your newsfeed (you definitely hadn't), then never fear - I'm back! And with a blog post so generic you'll forget it almost as soon as you've finished reading!
We may be more than a week into December already, but I thought I'd share with you what I'm aiming to achieve this month, and how I plan to do it!

It’s a simple one from me today - some homemade pickled red onion sprinkled atop some avocado toast. Made using the elusive perfectly ripe avocado, no less! 🥑

On a rainy day like this, what could be better than this supremely comforting Moroccan-inspired lamb dish? . Cumin-spiced lamb chops with a kale and chickpea stew, topped with Greek yoghurt, chopped mint and pomegranate seeds 🥘

Whoever came up with the idea of serving your entire breakfast on a tortilla is my hero. Also, Sunday brunch at 3pm is becoming an embarrassingly frequent occurrence... . Full English huevos rancheros - with Mexican spiced fried mushrooms, pico de gallo, halloumi and turkey bacon 🌶🥓🍳

Now the temperature has dropped a few degrees, it’s time for me to tell you about one of my favourite comfort foods - gallo pinto. Meaning ‘speckled rooster’ in Spanish, this vegetarian (and, depending on your accompaniments, often vegan) dish is a traditional staple meal in Nicaragua and Costa Rica. Low cost, filling and delicious, it’s no wonder it’s eaten for breakfast, lunch and dinner. . To be honest, my version pales in comparison to the authentic Nica dish prepared by Julia, the wonderful mama of @heliwp and @beckswebster, but I try my best! Today I am pairing it with avocado, fried plantain, pico de gallo, halloumi and creme fraiche, committing the heinous crime of not having a corn tortilla at the side of the plate.

Planning a trip to Barcelona? ✈️🏖🍻
Here are my tips for making the most of your time in the Catalonian capital!

Okay so I wildly underestimated how big these pizzas were gonna turn out but hey, more pizza is never really a bad thing - right? . It was a close call, but the mushroom, olive, caramelised onion and spinach one was my favourite. My boyfriend preferred the roasted red pepper, feta and artichoke (which means more pizza for me!) 💁🏼‍♀️🍕 @ Southampton

For a rainbow-coloured lunch, I’m having spicy peanut chicken salad with spiralized vegetables 🌶🥒🥕

User

Okay, I’m done with salad. . This lamb meatball bake is delicately spiced with cumin, chilli and mint, with Mediterranean vegetables and feta - low effort but delicious! 🥘

User

How obscured do the leaves have to be before it doesn’t count as a salad anymore? . Honey mustard chicken salad with strawberries, goat’s cheese, walnuts and avocado 🥗🍓🥑

User

It may be slightly too late for my rumoured holiday abs, but with three days until I fly out to gorge on Catalonian fare, I’m still trying! . This spicy chicken salad, with tomatoes, avocado and halloumi, will have to fulfil all my summer food cravings until I eat my way through the city of Barcelona 🥗

Happy birthday to the newest part of my body!
This time last year I was following starving instructions and washing my hair with some horrible pink shower gel. Today I'm wearing a tiny (!) 32DD sports bra and eating nutella on toast.

There are some that would call these eggs criminally overdone, but those people can go and enjoy their snotty eggs elsewhere.
Scrambled eggs are always better with a bit of cooked onion and tomato (and a large helping of hot sauce - not pictured). Hope you’re enjoying your Saturday morning breakfast, whatever it may be! 🍅🍳🌶

User

When the takeaway craving hits! 😩 . Can’t really vouch for the authenticity of this meal, but a homemade sweet and sour king prawn dish has really hit the spot! Next time I will add more chillies though 🍤🍛🌶

User

I went to London recently to do a lot of eating. You can read about it here.

Happy international houmous day! Today I’m celebrating with two homemade varieties - classic and sundried tomato. Perfect to be paired with minted lamb koftas, pitta and antipasti salad! 🥙

Sweet potato black bean taquitos with caramelised onion, feta and pico de gallo. Because what could be better to save you from that Sunday feeling than deep fried tortillas?
