About Herne Bay Pet Shop

Owned and managed by husband and wife team Rob and Sarah, Herne Bay Pet Shop supplies Herne Bay and the local area with good quality pet food, toys & accessories
We hold a wide range of products for dogs, cats, cage birds, fish, small animals & wild birds

Herne Bay Pet Shop Description

We are a family run business managed by husband and wife team Rob and Sarah (with the "help" of our 9yr old son Ed). We are also assisted during the week by our team - Amy, Sara and Jasmin.

Since taking over the business in early 2017 we have worked hard to develop the business' offering to ensure we continue to be a one-stop shop for most pets' needs.
We run a free local door-to-door delivery service covering Herne Bay and the surrounding areas from Reculver to Whitstable and everywhere in-between!

In stock there is always a wide range of products catering for all sorts of pets. Whether you have dogs, cats, cage birds, fish or small "furries" such as rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, ferrets or chinchillas we have something for you. In addition one section of the shop is dedicated to wildbird, ducks and hedgehogs with many varieties of food on offer.

We're a friendly team who are passionate about providing a great service at good value to all of our customers and their pets. Please do drop by to say hello, pick up anything you need or just have a browse to see what we can offer.

Some days it’s all about the puppy cuddles! Today we got to meet Jess, a 13wk old boxer puppy 😊 Naturally she got lots of fuss and attention whilst her owners picked up a few bits and pieces, and chatted about different foods.

Ooh, look, new fishy dog treats! 🐢 Dog Gone Fishin' is a nutritious range of grain-free fish treats made in the UK. They're either air-dried or baked to retain the natural Omega 3 which helps promote a healthy skin and coat. Two varieties contain glucosamine or green-lipped mussel supplements - great for older dogs. If you're after something a bit different then look no further than these flavoursome fishy nibbles!

From all of us at Herne Bay Pet Shop we would like to congratulate Rebecca Ruci Beckalooney, Natasha Hancock, Meelia Stewart-clarky and all of the team at Leading Dogss for their sponsored walk last weekend. To raise Β£727 for Dogs Trust is amazing - such a brilliant turn out, and great result to be proud of! Well done guys! πŸ˜€

It just goes to show that when you run a business with animals you should expect the unexpected.... Last week we took in a dozen cockatiels from someone who has moved away from the area and couldn't keep the birds. They're temporarily being housed in some cages in the shop whilst we assess their condition and get to know them and their personalities. There is a mixture of ages from 3 - 10yrs old and, as can be seen in these pictures, some are looking better than others. We believe this to be due to a mixture of boredom and one or two birds "bullying" the others. We'll be working to improve all of this before finding them new homes in the future. πŸ™‚

Look what's just arrived on our shelves... two flavours from Barking Heads & Meowing Heads newly relaunched range of cat food - "Paw Lickin' Chicken" and "So-fish-ticated Salmon". Both have a meat content of over 70% as well as ingredients such as egg, salmon oil, cranberry, tomato and seaweed. Their aim is to make the food naturally healthy as well as being full of flavour - enough to tempt the pickiest of cats!

Have you heard about the new cattery opening up this month in Herne Bay? Ann from Hilltops Cattery popped by today to say hello, and also drop off a leaflet and cards. For anyone who's interested in finding out more they are holding an open day this coming Sunday 12-3pm - all are welcome! 🐈

Calling all owners of smaller dogs... Piccolo Pet Food is a high quality dry dog food which has been specially formulated for small breeds. It comes in three flavours (and two bag sizes), is grain free and has 70-75% meat content. And, best of all, there has been a significant price drop from the manufacturer so it's now even better value. What more can you ask for?! ☺️

When Clare approached us to sponsor Luna Luck Photography she mentioned that she wanted to get new clothing with her logo on. We were more than happy to support her, and we think you'll agree that they look really neat 😎

Do you feed your dog Burns dry food? If so, are you aware of the loyalty scheme which is run by Burns Pet Nutrition? Only certain retailers are part of this scheme, and we're one of them!
Buy your Burns food from us, and we will give you a loyalty card to be stamped each time. Once you've bought 7 bags then the 8th is free 😎 It's that simple! We even do all the paperwork with Burns so you can just enjoy getting something for nothing!

Did you know that we also sell food and accessories for chickens? πŸ”πŸ₯ Along with bags of layers and growers pellets, chick corn and crumb, we have a range of medications and some feeders.

We've got a new charity donation pot on the counter... 😊 This one is supporting our local wildlife charity The Wildwood Trust. Any change you can drop in it will go directly to support the conservation work they do with British wildlife. As a business we have pledged funds to support their recent appeal - work to prevent the disappearance of red squirrels from our countryside.

Interested in Home Education?
Many of our regular customers are aware that we home educate our son, Ed. We are part of a large local and national home education ("HE") community. This week many in the community are holding *Not* Back To School picnics for locals to reconnect after the summer and also to welcome those new to HE. As there are often inset days at the start of the school term it can also be an opportunity for those interested in home educating their children to c...ome along and chat to experienced HE parents, while their children can experience the atmosphere of a home education group first hand.
I help organise a social group that runs on Mondays at Hernhill Village Hall and Grounds (near Faversham). We would like to open the invitation this week (Monday 3rd September) to other parents interested in home education to come along and join in our own Not Back To School event. All ages are welcome - tots to teens.
We're having a "messy" week this week: There will be painting (with your feet ;) ), bubbles, rockets.... Group den building... Apple pie making from local apples... Simple fun activities :) The hall has a small playground and a large playing field - we bring along a variety of outdoor toys.
Meet time is 1100-1500. Cost is Β£5 per family (to help pay for hall hire). Hall is next to Hernhill CofE primary school (postcode ME13 9JG). There is a nearby road closure in the village so best to approach the hall from The Red Lion pub (ME13 9TU). Public transport options are minimal sadly. I hope to have a similar "open" meet in central Herne Bay in the near future :)
I have met many people in the shop that are interested in home educating - from those with very young children whose parents don't think are "ready" for school, or who oppose starting school at 4years, to those with older children who just don't "fit" the system. There are numerous reasons to home educate and many many ways in which to do so. The best source of information about HE is home educating parents (and kids!) themselves. We have many local and national facebook groups (PM me for details), plus the following websites are also accurate, informative and up to date: https://www.educationotherwise.org/ http://educationalfreedom.org.uk/ http://home-ed.info/
Please note, if you do attend the group, that our regulars ask you to be wary of posting photos of children other than your own on social media etc without permission.
You are more than welcome to share this post to friends :) I do apologise for the late notice!

For the second time this year we are delighted to be sponsoring one of the classes at this fun dog show. πŸ• It's being organised by Colette's Horse & Dog Shows at the Faversham Show Ground this Sunday, and should be a good day since the weather will be drier by the weekend. If you want some fun with your dog do head over there - and if you win a rosette look out for the ones with our name on!

In addition to the Forthglade Natural Pet Food wet food trays, we now have their new grain-free cold pressed dog food on our shelves in 1kg and 2.5kg bags. Available with chicken or duck as the protein source, it's suitable for all lifestages from 2-months onward. And, with no "junk or fillers", the food is made of 100% natural ingredients all cold-pressed together to seal in the nutrients. Why not pop in and see us to find out more?! πŸ•

I took this photo on Tuesday at the end of our delivery round. Herne Bay seafront baking in the sunshine. It looks a bit different today! 🌧🌧

Did you take part in the dog show at the Herne & Broomfield Fun Day last weekend? If so, you may well find yourself in one of these great pictures by Luna Luck Photography. Printed copies are available to order direct through their page, and there's currently a discount if you want more than one :)

It was really nice to bump into Becky from Leading Dogss whilst I was out delivering earlier (even if she did nip into the parking space that I wanted! πŸ˜‚) If you're looking for someone to take care of your dogs whilst you're at work, or away on holiday, then give these guys a call!

Our cages are fairly full of different birds at the moment. With a good variety of budgies, canaries and finches in there the shop is constantly filled with background noise! These pictures show a selection of our current inhabitants 🐦 If you're interested in any of them please pop into the shop - we'll be happy to talk through their different characteristics and requirements etc
