Here's another happy smile 😁 from one of our patients to share with you at the end of the National Smile Month.
Her previously treated tooth had part of the tooth chipped away impacting her smile. Dr Michael prepped the tooth two weeks ago and we had the coronation 👑 this week.
So we have another happy patient, who is very pleased with the natural looking results and the matching colour of the crown. The next stop will be to replace the old silver filling with a nice tooth... coloured composite.

This week we have met some wonderful new patients, who have decided to join our practice. We have also had visits from patients, who have been coming to this practice for decades, some since the 1960s. One of the patients mentioned that he has been visiting the practice since he was just a 18-year old new student at the University of Southampton.
Many of us find a dentist or dental practice we like and we stick with them for years. How to educate children about the importance of good oral health?
It's National Smile Month 😁 so I thought to start with the cutest smiles there are - the children's one - when I saw a short article about UK schools being "worse" for oral health education in the Dentist magazine.
As a mother of two 👩‍👦‍👦I thought I had quite a good idea of what my children needed to do in order to maintain good oral health. I started working at Highfield Dental & Facial Clinic about two year...s ago and even though I think I had managed to taught my boys some good habits, I have become very aware there was a lot more to do.
✅ Ensure teeth are brushed twice a day thoroughly - ideally with an electric tooth brush.
I'd heard two minutes brushing time before, but additional advise I have learnt was to brush each teeth surface for three seconds. This advice made it easier for my boys to aim for the correct thorough brushing of all areas.
My son was also told by our hygienist to target also those areas where bacteria might be hiding - like a game of hide&seek and that he needs to make sure he finds all little corners and pockets his brush. What a great piece of advice❗️
✅ Reduce sugar
I did know sugar 🍭🍬is not good for teeth, but what I have learnt is that it is not so much eating sugar, it is more about constant snacking. Reducing snacking and eating at regular times is better for teeth.
✅ Drink water
If after eating a fruit or drinking fizzy drinks🥤, drink a glass of water first before brushing your teeth. This makes brushing teeth less abrasive.
And make sure after brushing teeth at bedtime, kids do not eat or drink anything. Bottle 🍼at bed time after brushing teeth is not a good idea from oral health perspective!
✅ Regular dental visits
Make sure your children get into habit of visiting dentist and hygienist on a regular basis from early on. Prevention is always better than treatment.
Perhaps you could bring your child along to your examination to see what the dentist does before his or her first visit. We welcome children's friends to the appointments as well and I can tell you that we have had exciting visits from a kitten🐱, an otter and even from a dinosaur 🦖. And allow them got stickers - not lollies - afterwards.
