About Hillfolk Illustration

Discover my growing range of landscape illustrations, inspired by some of my favourite views in the South West. My work centres around plants and flowers, focusing on how a view sits within the natural environment.

Hillfolk Illustration Description

Hi I’m Beth Hill, artist and owner of Hillfolk Illustration. I always wanted to make a living doing something creative, and initially studied Fine Art at uni, before training as an Art teacher and eventually settling into a career as a graphic designer 15 years ago. Nowadays I work as the lead creative for a local authority.
I was born and grew up on a farm in the nearby village of Shaldon, and after uni I returned to live by the sea. As a child, I remember going out and sitting in the fields amongst the cattle drawing the view – it was such a magical place.
I have always felt happiest amongst natural surroundings, and love nothing better than a walk in the countryside or along the coast.
I’ve been inspired by my love of the natural landscape to create a new series of illustrations. With plants and flowers as the focus, I aim to reveal some of my favourite places in and around my hometown.
Although I started painting in oils and acrylics, my career in graphic design has meant that my work has taken a new direction. Nowadays my computer is my canvas, using a digital stylus and design software to ‘paint’ my pictures.
I hope you enjoy looking through my work. I’m always looking for new places to capture, so if you have somewhere you would like to see please get in touch!

Wednesdays are now ‘walk to work’ days for me, and last night I just had to stop and take a photo of the wonderful golden light in my local park. Its official name is Sherwell Park, but locally it’s known as ‘pretty park’ - I’m sure you can see why!🌸🌿

A quick sketch this morning from some photos I took last year, but whereabouts in South Devon is this?🧐

Look what the postman brought today! 📮These are a new batch of A6 cards, and the first to feature the illustrations with no white border (as these are only small, I was getting alignment issues with the previous ones). I’ve also chosen a different card stock - if you look at the second photo you can see it’s slightly textured, giving it a more handmade feel. Hope you approve of the changes! Most of the Brixham Harbour ones are headed to the wonderful @coastvibebrixham, but I’ll be adding the others to my shop as soon as I get the chance. Look out for some special deals on the old style cards too!✉️🌸🌿 @ Hillfolk Illustration

Mondays are my day off with the boy. When he was younger I used to work while he had his afternoon nap, but those days are gone (stop growing so quickly little boy!) Luckily he’s really into pretend play at the moment, so I had a bit of time to do a more to this one (while he rescued Paw Patrol from the jail!🐶)

I captured this view of Goodrington last summer, with the pink valerian and daisies that grow on the cliff path leading up to Roundham Head. I really enjoyed drawing the Agapanthus in my Babbacombe illustration, and spotted some further up the cliff path at Roundham last summer, so expect to see a new Goodrington print for 2019 soon! @ Goodrington Sands Beach

I love to see which prints people choose to buy together! This selection sees my latest illustration of Babbacombe sitting alongside views of Elberry Cove and Brixham Harbour. I think all the blues and greens look great together - I hope you do too! 🎨

A bit of progress on this one this evening... The first rough colour layout for my latest illustration - peeking through the trees at Battery Gardens to Brixham lighthouse. 🌿 Looking forward to working this one up - and already loving the contrast between the soft greens and blues and the vibrant orange of the Crocosmia - hope you do too! 🎨

🎉My latest illustration is ready! 🎉Thanks to all of you who voted earlier - there was a clear favourite, so I’ve opted for Babbacombe Bay as the title for this one. Hope you like it! If you would like a print, you can now grab one from my website from just £10: https://hillfolk.co.uk/…/p…/sample-pr oduct/babbacombe-bay-19

Ooh I think I might have finished this one! I’m a bit bleary eyed this evening (it’s been a long week!) so need to take another look in the morning, but unless I decide to fiddle with it some more, I’ll be listing it in my shop very soon. Hope you like it! ☺️

I’ve been wanting to capture this view since last year, after seeing a photo on IG. I took a trip over to Brixham in the summer, and discovered a beautiful crop of fiery red Montbretia growing amongst the ferns. 🌿 I just love the way you can see the Breakwater and lighthouse through the trees - think I might add a fishing boat or two in the final version...⛵️

More captivating crocuses - this time on Torre Abbey Meadows 🌸 I find it fascinating that nature has chosen to create these flowers in the complimentary colours of purple and yellow (those of who did art at school might remember the colour wheel) Is it a coincidence that such a pretty view uses all the colours in the spectrum?!🎨

I enjoyed the couple of craft fayres that I did last year so much, that I’ve made it one of my aims for this year to sign up for more! I’ve made a page on my site with the list of confirmed events, so if you would like to see whereabouts I’m going to be visit https://hillfolk.co.uk/events-2019 😊

Feeling inspired after finishing my Haldon piece, so have started reworking an illustration of Babbacombe from last year. I’ve only actually drawn one Agapanthus flower so far (it took aaages!) but have duplicated it for the time being so that I can get a feel for how a whole bunch of them might look. 🌻🌻🌻 Next up will be the leaves - I’ve got an idea in my head, but I just need to get it down on paper (or screen in my case!)🌿🌼 Oh, and I’d like to redraw the @three_degrees_west building too - so it’ll pretty much be a totally new picture in the end!

I loved making this portrait so much! It’s the second one that I’ve done for this family and this time round they asked me to capture them in Halloween outfits!🐱🦖🦄🐭 They know how to make their portrait unique, choosing clothing that is instantly recognisable and lots of little details too.
If you would like to get some ideas about what to include in a portrait, I’ve written a post with my 5 top tips here https://hillfolk.co.uk/5-ways-to-make-you r-custom-portrait-…

And relax! Aah Friday, you’ve been a long time coming this week, I’m just hoping the weekend goes equally slowly! Well, I’ve finally finished my Haldon Belvedere illustration! I keep tweaking the colours but have settled on this combo - hope you like it! Anyone who’s interested in a print can find it in my shop here https://hillfolk.co.uk/…/pr…/sample-p roduct/haldon-belvedere ☺️

Is it just me, or is there anyone else out there who stops the car just to take a pic of something lovely?! 📷 I’m extra sad, as I’d spotted this magnificent magnolia at the weekend and took a detour on my way home so I could take a snap!🌸 I’d love to incorporate one of these trees into an illustration - anyone know of a spot in south Devon where I could find one of these with a beautiful view behind? 🤔

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️”Beth is amazing and was very patient with me... I wouldn’t hesitate to buy a print from her again” Thank you so much Laura for your kind words, it means a lot to me that you’ve taken the time to leave a review. I loved creating this special gift for you, so really pleased (and relieved!) that you all like it too! ☺️

User

Remember those ferns I sketched at the weekend? Well, I’ve now added them to my illustration 😊🌿 A couple more tweaks needed, then I’ll be listing this one in my shop. Watch this space!

User

I love how Beth has created a beautiful family portrait with a difference, it's a lovely thing to keep and the fact we could add special things like a train set for my little boy just made it perfect. Thank you!

User

Beth was fantastic and designed us a bespoke illustration for our wedding which we absolutely loved and used everywhere! I would definitely recommend her!

User

Beth was a lovely person to deal with and we are very impressed with her work.

User

Beth produced an amazing picture of my husband- even got his tattoos and our pup's markings down to a tee. He loved it and is already hung up, pride of place.

User

Beth is very talented and created a very special gift for a very special friend! Thank you so much x

User

Beth is so talented and original. She captured the essence of my stepson and his wife as they await the arrival of their first child. The quirky, unique portrait was an ideal and original gift for the Baby Shower and both future parents love it. I assumed that it would be put up in the baby's nursery but they want it 'displayed' in the hall or lounge. As my stepson would say 'Result!'
