House Of Marbles Description

House of Marbles is a splendid place to visit in Bovey Tracey, just off the A38 on the outskirts of Dartmoor. With no charge for admission and free parking, hours can be spent watching the many fantastical marble runs in action. Seek out new and exciting treats in the gift, game and homeware shop.

It is a unique site with plenty for all ages and the whole family to see. Explore the museums, learn about the history of pottery and view the bottle kilns that are still standing today. Be amused by the spiffing games of old, ponder the many generations who’ve played with the antique marbles on display and catch a glimpse of the history of glass before watching it being crafted in the onsite working glassworks.
Stay for a bite to eat in the licensed Old Pottery Restaurant, open for breakfast, lunch with choices from the Chef’s specials board, or afternoon tea. There’s outdoor seating for warmer months and a secluded children’s play frame, and this is also where you’ll hunt down the huge floating marble in the games garden.

Don’t miss a visit to this treasure on the edge moors.

This is our 5th trip to the house of marbles and love it - the cafe has lovely food and the play area for my kids is perfect. I love Teigh Valley Glass and collect it so a vist to the workshop to see the glass blowing is a must, to see the glass I collect being created right in front of your eyes is amazing and i alway come home with a piece for my collection.

User

Such a wonderful place to spend an afternoon. The shop is amazing. The marble runs are delightful and the cafe is a lovely place to spend a couple of quiet hours. We recommend it to our guests and it's been agreed that it's one of the best stops in Devon.

User

Love house of marbles, went when I was a child, now I take my boy's and hubby there, they love it too.

Love seeing all different marbles shape and size as well designs, boy's like pressing the buttons to see the marbles moving around the machines, very clever.

Glass marking wow always take my breath away, was nice could order glass piece b4 going (as we did this time).

We all can not wait to go again next year.

User

I've never actually been here but I ordered something online and had some pieces missing so they shipped one to us for free with no questions!will definitely shop here again!

User

I visited for the first time yesterday; my husband had been twice and had told me about the place and said I would love it. I did! What an interesting place. We were all like children in a sweet shop. Looking at all the marbles brought back childhood memories for all of us of playing marbles with family and friends. We did not manage to look around everywhere as we had no time once we had finished our meal. The restaurant is lovely and so was the food. The Thai fishcakes are just lovely. Hopefully, we will be going back in half term with all the children.x

User

I emailed House of Marbles to enquire about purchasing a replacement piece for one we had lost from a favourite game. Two days later and it arrived in the post free of charge. Fantastic, kind and friendly service. Thank you so much to Debbie, my children are delighted!

User

I could of pottered around the shop for ages. Pottery museum was interesting but really loved the marble museum with the marble gadgets. The glass blowing I could of watched forever. Everyone was so friendly especially to my dog who was allowed everywhere. The restaurant food was lovely and was asked several times if my dog needed water. A great place to visit.

User

Had a really relaxing afternoon with a cream tea and a wander around the shops. Spent a while watching the glass blowing too... so relaxing we forgot the time watching the super marble run,. The staff were excellent even though it was closed by the time we left... thank you. Xxx

User

Great service, even though I am a new customer they gave me a free gift.

Marbles are excellent in detail and well made, I wasn't expecting the marbles to be so good for the price.

User

Great place to visit on a rainy day. The marble runs are amazing. Wish we could have stayed longer but our little ones were struggling to contain their excitement with all the wonderful toys in the shop. Myself and my 4yr old walked away very happy with bags of beautiful marbles. The staff were lovely. Will definitely be back again.

User

Brilliant afternoon here today...thought we would pop in for an hour and ended up there over 3 hours....kids loved the play area outside and the marble run wall. Only had a coffee in the restaurant but the food looked amazing so will stay for lunch next time. Brought a couple of the glass ornaments which I feel were good value compared to other places I have seen. X

User

Amazing! We had been looking forward to a visit for a long time and were not at all disappointed. The museum parts of the site were engaging, with enough quirky details to keep it fresh and not stuffy and dull. The restaurant served beautiful fresh food and the marbles mess sundae was the indulgent treat the menu promised. You are really close to the action in the glass workshop and the finished pieces are a feast for the eyes. Toilets were really clean and spacious.

User

Always worth the visit and good food available

User

Went yesterday . Very . Very busy 2 1/2 he wait to see Santa. Our choice to wait. Waited 30mins to get a table in restaurant then 45 mins for the food to arrive . The food was very nice. Staff very friendly despite the volumes they were trying to serve. Restaurant offering 2 course Christmas dinner as well as normal menu . Maybe do one or the other. We really enjoyed the displays . Museum and glass blowing.

User

Lovely place to stop.

Marble museum is interesting especially the giant run at the top of the stairs.

The glass blower was working too,so that was great to watch..

Nice cup of coffee too

User

I wanted to purchase a small toy from the gift shop for my little boy. It was £2.99 and I didn't have the cash. I had to leave it as I was advised that you only take card payment over £5. This was disappointing as the toy brand him a lot of joy in the shop. Apart from that it was a lovely morning.

User

We visit a lot, as locals. Today we had cake & drinks in the cafe-very nice and again, very friendly staff, we watched the glass blowing and then went to buy (more) marbles. Today my daughter was served by a young member of staff who did not make eye contact, made no attempt to be friendly and just about managed to ask for the cash, she was exactly the same with me. She was not up to the usual standard of friendly and helpful staff. I think she may need more training as to how to deal with members of public.

User

The children loved the marble runs, the glass blowing and the outside play area so it was a great success but ..... Want a coffee - I suggest you go elsewhere. The restaurant wasn't particularly busy so 30 mins to get 4 coffees and 1 hot chocolate to the table was far too long. The staff were helpful and friendly enough but the way the behind the counter area is set up seems to be really inefficient.

User

Nice place to visit but over the last few years we found the upstairs became a basic shop, just like the downstairs. We used to find many trinkets and rare collectables but now find it limited and overpriced, we still enjoy the cafe but our visits have gone from few times a year to once every year or two and rarely buy much
