About Jubilee Sailing Trust

JST aims to make a difference to the lives of all our participants, but we know that our impact is especially strong for some social groups.

Jubilee Sailing Trust Description

The JST started in Southampton nearly 40 years ago, and have now branched out to Australia, New Zealand and USA. Our voyages travel all over the world, reaching spectacular destinations and providing some exhilarating sailing between.

It doesn't matter whether you have a disability or not, whether you have sailed before or not. Everyone plays a part in sailing our unique and magnificent tall ships.

You'll learn incredible life skills along the way; build confidence, teamwork and leadership, whilst meeting inspirational people and forming strong friendships. Our ships are always on move, so visit our website to see if there's a voyage that covers your 'bucket list' destinations.

A few poetic words on volunteering written by James Venner in 2000. It is thanks to volunteers such as James that helped to build Tenacious that so many are now able to set sail for freedom on our ships #ThrowbackThursday #TBT #Tenacious
I joined the British Army almost fifty years ago We learned such useful attributes as marching fast and slow.
... We learned to fire a Bren gun and to hurl a hand-grenade And all the spit and polish - of such are soldiers made.
Though only National Serviceman we had a lot of fun Like learning how to kill by hand, by knife and with a gun.
Our kindly Sergeant Major taught us how to sweat and swear But his most important message was ‘you never volunteer.’
Well that was many years ago and with age you start to slip And I fell hook line and sinker when asked to build a ship.
So I drove around to Woolston to help to build a barque But was asked before shipbuilding, would I help convert the Ark.
We had to gut the building, every wall and door destroyed If you paused to take a breather you were sent into the void.
What a foolish lot of suckers, all that blood, sweat and tears I only hope that Shorewatch know about us volunteers.
When I got into the Shipyard, I did not have a clue It seemed I spent at least a year in sanding lumps of glue.
And when we reached the toast-rack stage I near threw in the towel I hope I never see again a metal square or dowel.
Then those countless little staples nearly drove us round the bend That task went on forever and we felt would never end. All those knees and frames and deck beams sanded smooth as baby’s bot Now they’re placing steel and plastic to cover up the lot.
Well the deck is almost finished and the teak looks mighty fine And those variable propellers, I just hope the shaft’s in line. From his cabin in the wheelhouse John can con his ship with pride Real bedroom slipper sailing, he need never go outside.
Soon we reach the stage of roll-out, then we have to face the cold You would think we’d learnt our lesson, wisdom comes with getting old. But in spite of all our learning and that message loud and clear There never seems a shortage of that breed, the volunteer.
I am searching for the right shaped bird to carve the figurehead We shall now not have a bulldog but a mermaid there instead. The spar making firm’s gone bankrupt so we may not go for sail Just another stinking motor boat if the engineers prevail.
But I must in truth confess to you and in confidence confide That having helped a little bit, I feel a touch of pride. Tenacious will be beautiful, when she’s launched I’ll shed a tear We are proud to be a part of her and to be a volunteer.

'Capt Campbell says it is hard to pick highlights from such a long career – although she does admit that being part of the Lord Nelson's round-the-world voyage between 2012 and 2014 stands out. "It was a massive undertaking at the time and was quite challenging in many aspects. We had some amazing sailing – sometimes at speeds in excess of 13 knots – and Lord Nelson was a great workhorse, ploughing through 60-knot winds and everything." Learn more about the highlights of Captain Barbara's distinguished 43 years at sea in this article from Nautilus. #WisdomWenesday #FreedomtoExplore

Today marks 70 years since the universal declaration of Human rights #HumanRightsDay2018. This year's theme is Equality, Justice & Human Dignity, which fits nicely with the ethos at JST, where our vision is of an inclusive world where we can all contribute and feel valued. Thanks to Catriona for sharing her JST experience during her voyage aboard Lord Nelson. #freedomtoexplore #theseadoesnottdisciminate
Catriona's JST Experience
... Freedom to explore....
“It was an amazing experience to be part of a mixed ability team with a common purpose, so when we were set tasks such as in happy hour everyone participated and played equal roles. Having a brother with learning disabilities has made me realise that the key to their quality of life is enabling them to do as much as possible; it was really nice to be on a ship where the crew and the ship’s design are there to do just that”.

This week's #TalkTuesday is from Rachel. In her own words Rachel talks about facing daunting challenges and rebuilding her life in the aftermath of her spinal cord injury...
"I had loved the sea in my previous life but then became very wary as I had dived into shallow water in the Indian Ocean when I had my accident, banging my head on a sandbank and becoming instantly paralysed which meant I almost drowned and had to be dragged out to safety. I had steered clear of the sea ...since, so when my friend introduced me to JST and told me he would be my buddy on a sailing trip around the Canaries, my emotions were pretty mixed. After agonising over whether to go, I convinced myself I needed to face my fear and try to overcome it, that nothing bad would happen and to just go for it and with the help of my friend and JST, I did!
Looking back now, I’m so glad I made that decision. One of the best things about the trip was all the different people I met, including others with a whole range of disabilities. The other great memory I have is being terrified yet excited as I was pulled up into the crow’s nest by ropes attached to my chair! Since then, my relationship with the sea has improved to the extent that I am no longer scared to go in the water and I have been in the sea several times since with my husband and young daughter, much to their delight!
I’ve now been in a chair 20 years. Life has had it’s ups and downs, this year though, I have had a bad year health wise and have been on bed rest since February due to a pressure sore which is just refusing to heal. So I got really down and despondent. My husband saw what was happening & bought me some paints as a surprise to give me something to do. I thought he was mad as the only art I had done for over 25 years were bits and bobs with my daughter. However, I needed some way to occupy my mind so I started painting and I kept at it. My idea was if I couldn’t go places, then places would come to me through my paintings, so that’s what I did and it has helped me immensely and has given me hope back that I will get out there again and am currently waiting for a surgery date. All my paintings are done lying on my side in bed and as I part of my injury means I have no grip in my hands, I have to use two hands to steady myself. My paintings very often feature the sea and I am not only painting but selling paintings!
Similarly to the ethos behind JST, when the chips are down in life, you have to keep trying to find the good and I have done this through my paintings just as JST helped me to overcome my fear of the sea all those years ago." #SpinalCordInjury #FreedomToExplore

I have had the most amazing voyages with JST over the years and can highly recommend being a buddy as well. Everyone is welcoming and you can both help others and be helped regardless of your physical ability or sailing skills (no sailing experience is required). The permanent crew are amazing and really supportive as well. They really are a great holiday!
