On Thursday, which was #WorldMentalHealthDay, my 2017 film Grey was screened as part of The Excited Orange Festival, a local arts fest focussed on mental health, which takes place at and features art from a local psychiatric hospital.
When Grey was first written four years ago, it was for my own mental health. When we filmed it, it was to share that story and representation, and to (hopefully) resonate with people who had similar experiences. In 2017 it was screened at SIFF a...nd several people approached me to talk about how it resonated with them. One actress spoke about how it helped her understand her daughter’s depression more. Since then I’ve had friends tell me it put things into words they couldn’t explain before, and strangers message me saying they could relate to the partner/family’s experience.
Even though it was hard to film, and there’s so very much I would change about the film and script, I still think it’s the most important thing I’ve ever made (and possible ever will make).
The fact that four years on from writing the screenplay (which came from songs and poetry written even longer ago!) and despite all its flaws that I see, I got such moving feedback from people at Antelope House - it really reminds me why I’m doing this. People who are waking up every day, often wishing they weren’t, who are fighting a battle against themselves. Mental health hospitals who have so few resources from wider government, where people lives are at risk because of a lack of funding. Individuals who are seen as nothing more than ‘crazy’ or ‘scary’. The fact these people in this place got even the smallest thing from my film means more than anything.
It makes me remember why I made Grey, and to see it not as a film that I have so many gripes with, but as a piece of my life, myself and a piece of work that can move people and give them something to hold onto.
My only goal with film has always been to make at least one thing that one person was affected by - sad, happy, nostalgic, whatever. The fact I’ve achieved that with Grey and that this little film and it still resonates years later truly inspires me to keep pursuing this.
If you’d like to, you can watch Grey here. Please be aware of references to suicide and self harm. https://vimeo.com/loreleijpbowman/greyfil m

Music was a huge influence when writing #WayfaringFilm and helped me flesh out the atmosphere. A massive thank you to my talented friend Beck for taking my original tangle of musical inspiration, screenplay and score notes and turning it into what is now an award-nominated soundtrack!

Managing post-production of an indie film when the whole crew is up and down the UK and working full-time jobs is a challenge; but we know it'll be worth all the (sometimes blood), sweat and tears!

What do you mean this isn’t a real clapperboard?

For the last year or so I've been considering taking my script editing work more seriously, and after a recent influx of requests to look at people's work I'm pleased to say I'll be starting a new script editing and consultancy service!
My services focus on providing clear and accessible editing and reading service for indie, amateur and student filmmakers who may not be able to afford the £300 sessions with a professional script editor.
I offer a bunch of discounts and diff...erent services including a free read and feedback if you're a student or recent graduate. If you have an idea, a draft, treatment or full script you'd like me to look at then just get in touch!
You can read all about it on my website: http://www.loreleibowman.com/script-editi ng
