Mary Hosking-Ellis, Riverside Health Therapies Description

I have been working as a sports and massage therapist for over 14 years and I am very passionate about helping my clients. I treat people with sports and non sports related soft tissue injuries, people with back / neck spasm pain, oedema, post knee or hip replacement treatment and many, many other issues. Other health problems can also be helped with Reflexology. I am good at what I do and see amazing results with my clients. No one should feel that the pain or discomfort they live with is untreatable. I am amazed at what people come in to me with which they have had for a long time, in some cases the pain has gone within a few sessions. Obviously every person is different so all experience different results. I hope that clients who like my page will write a little about their problem and how I have helped them.

On this page I would like to answer any questions I can. I would like to write some blogs and also to share articles of particular interest to my clients. I would also like to be able to post any offers.

An exciting new venture is that I am going to my teaching. Before I had my children I taught professional sports massage and love teaching. I am going to start with a few courses for home massage. I have often been asked to help show clients techniques that they can use on either themselves or members of their family at home. I will post more about this over the next few weeks.

I am going to be doing a lot more distance reiki and energy treatments at the moment. This is something I have done for 20 years and have provided for clients who have been unable to get out of their homes for different reasons. It is fantastic for stress and many health issues. If you would like to know more please contact me. I personally have had distance reiki, crystal and energy treatments and it is very effective.

Hi there. I just want to reassure my clients that I am continuing to work through this current situation. I am in the lucky situation where I have control over my own environment and can spray and clean thoroughly my clinic room, door handles and gate handles between each client. I may need to tweak appointment times between clients to give me more time to clean. I have plenty of anti viral spray!! All towels will be washed on a hot wash and fresh for each client (which is... normal practice anyway). If I need to move your time slightly I will let you know. I will ensure that the children are not going into those areas as well. As per current advise, if you feel unwell with a temperature etc on the day of your appointment please let me know ASAP. I will also promise that I will do the same. I would not work if I felt i had been in contact with the virus or if I felt unwell. Even under limited travel rules when you arrive at my house you can all park on my drive to avoid being on the main pavement etc. and the children will not be in the garden. A lot of my clients will struggle if too many weeks go between sessions. Last year when I had to be off work with my spine operation it was really noticeable how bad some issues got for clients. Let's work through this together and hopefully I can keep going without any illnesses!

It’s really cold!!!! Be very careful with any twinges. I am getting so many running injuries coming in so make sure your up to date with maintenance

The children are back at school from Wednesday so you will be pleased to know I am now a lot more available. Thanks for being understanding during the long summer holidays. Remember to try to get a maintenance treatment in before the weather gets cooler. If your muscles are not holding tensely you will be less likely to spasm or tear muscles when they get colder. It only takes a slight temperature drop to affect us. Every year I get very busy with neck and shoulder problems in September/ October.

Why is it important to have follow up sessions and how long do I need to leave between sessions?
This is a question I was asked today, and I have often been asked this over the years. The answer really does depend on the problem. If there is an old muscle spasm that is causing a problem the timing between sessions is very important. The longer it has been there the longer it may take to get to a manageable state. The muscle fibres have a muscle memory. The brain has a pre... programmed instruction to keep the body in its "norm". Sadly the brain thinks that the norm is the state the muscle was in at the start of the session. The fibres loosen in the session but over time the brain sends the message to return the muscle fibres to the tighter state. If we can loosen the fibres within 7-10 days the muscles won't have returned to their tighter state and will loosen nicely .... this may need a few sessions (depending on the age of the spasm and other factors in the clients day to day life). Over time we can get to a happy maintenance frequency which varies from person to person. Some of my clients like to come weekly, some every 2,3,4,6 weeks etc. A few just call me when they have their next injury. I was looking through my diary one year though. Those clients who kept to a maintenance treatment actually saw me a similar number of times through the year. It's much nicer to come once a month and be relatively pain free day to day .... than see my every 6 months with a lot of pain from an injury. This usually needs about 3 sessions to repair the injury/spasm.
I am happy to answer any other questions .....

Hi all. We are half way through the summer holidays already! I am working whilst the children are off.. just slightly altered timings. September and October usually get very busy with people getting neck and shoulder problems for some reason. So don't leave a problem to get worse. If you have a problem the sooner it's treated the quicker it will get better (and less treatments needed).

Sorry I have not posted for so long. I have been very busy working, and looking after my 3 children. Timmy is now 3 and is at kindergarden 4 mornings a week. He is loving it and I am loving being able to offer appointments in the mornings now. November and December have been busy as usual. Over the 15 years I have been in practice there has always been a sharp increase in back pain as well as calf injuries when the weather turns cold. Please wrap up warm and in particular make sure your lumbar and sacral areas in your back are warm.
