Alan Titchmarsh Showcases New Book at a ‘Meet the Author’ Dinner at The Mercure Southampton Centre Dolphin Hotel
Television presenter, Hampshire resident and one of the UK’s most prolific authors, Alan Titchmarsh, will be appearing at a special ‘meet the author’ dinner on 4th October 2018 at the Mercure Southampton Centre Dolphin Hotel in Southampton.
At the ‘Evening with Alan Titchmarsh’, the author will be carrying out a personal appearance and book signing session as part ...of an event celebrating the launch his new novel, The Scarlett Nightingale. The evening offers his fans the opportunity to meet him in person, receive a copy of his book, enjoy a two-course dinner and hear Alan share anecdotes and stories of his career.
The night begins at 6.30pm with arrival drinks and dinner, after which Alan will discuss his book and highlights of a wide-ranging career as a gardener, TV presenter and novelist. Guests can participate in an audience question and answer session, before meeting Alan as he signs their copy of his book.
The Scarlett Nightingale, published by Hodder & Stoughton on 20th September 2018, is set in wartime London and occupied France, and is a thrilling story of love, danger and sacrifice.
Tickets for the event need to be bought in advance and are £37.00 per person including a hard-back copy of ‘The Scarlett Nightingale’. 10% of the proceeds from ticket sales are being donated to Variety, the Children’s Charity. Tickets are available from bookings@dolphin-southampton.com or call 023 8038 6460. Visit, https://www.dolphin-southampton.com/ Car parking is available at the Hotel.
This is the first ‘meet the author’ dinner in what is hoped will be a series of such events for the Mercure Southampton Centre Dolphin Hotel. Dan Wilson, new general manager of the Hotel, explains: “We are delighted to be welcoming Alan to the Hotel and to Southampton. It’s sure to be a sell-out dinner, so I would definitely recommend people book their tickets quickly.”
“The Dolphin Hotel has a rich literary heritage, and so Alan is certainly in great company! Jane Austen celebrated her 18th birthday here in 1793. William Makepeace Thackary wrote part of his novel, 'Pendennis', while sitting in the Hotel’s magnificent bow window, and there is even speculation that Shakespeare performed outside the Hotel in Dolphin Lane. We want to really celebrate our literary connections, and so are planning further author events in the coming year.”
Alan Titchmarch is known to millions through his career as a television presenter of shows including Ground Force, Gardeners' World, Love Your Garden, the Chelsea Flower Show and The Alan Titchmarsh show. He has written more than forty gardening books, as well as eight best-selling novels and three volumes of memoir. He was made MBE in the millennium New Year Honours list and holds the Victoria Medal of Honour, the Royal Horticultural Society's highest award.

Staff very friendly and professional and also got involved in the festive atmosphere with us all. Great night certainly will do it again. Well done Emma and Team

The staff where very friendly and a lovely and relaxing atmosphere food was amazing

User

Afternoon tea here is very nice, at £10 head it’s worth the visit.

User

A lovely hotel. Very clean and tidy. Warm welcoming staff that cater to your every need. Even when I asked for some more milk for our room the receptionist (night porter), went and got me some fresh milk with no questions asked, even though it was 1am. Also I think the extra security gate is an amazing idea especially being in the centre of town!! We will be back soon

User

Very friendly helpful staff, nothing too much trouble. Room comfortable and pleasant. Hotel itself set in the Old Town steeped in history will definitely return ****

User

I had an eventful night at the Dolphin hotel, after being stranded due to fog in Guernsey we were put up in this hotel. After going to bed at 2am, I turned off the lights to hear noises, I pinned it down to the skinny wardrobe. Lights on, opened wardrobe, nothing? Shut the door, lights off the noises started again (it was like hangers knocking together) I ended up sleeping with the lights on all night.. only after relaying the events to my work mates, one of them looked up the hotel to find it has 6 ghosts and one of them likes to play with the wardrobes!?

User

Friendly staff, standard room a little bit but otherwise good.

User

Went for a work Christmas meal yesterday

My husband and I came for afternoon tea yesterday to celebrate our wedding anniversary. I can't say I can fault the service, the price or the food...but the environment was a let down. The website advertises "Sit within the comfortable and relaxed environment of our Signature Restaurant..." however we were seated in the bar area in the corner as the only people eating, and surrounded by people with suitcases waiting for taxis and BBC News 24 on the tv. Not really the ambience I had intended for our celebration which is a shame since other reviews have given positive feedback due to being in the restaurant area. We felt a little out of place. I'm sure good hospitality was intended as the service was punctual but the bill was pushed on us 3 times and in the end even though we said we weren't ready yet, it was printed and given to us when we hadn't even been there for an hour. Afternoon tea means tea in the afternoon. This made us feel uncomfortable like we were being made to leave quickly. I think there may have been an event on and the restaurant was in use but nevertheless I was not told of this in the booking correspondence otherwise I would have chosen elsewhere so we could take our time and relax.

User

It's a nice hotel, friendly staff. Quite overpriced for what it is though, bedrooms are very basic, bathroom is quite nice but missing some essentials though (bin, toilet brush etc..). Also hold quite a large deposit when you come in and you can't claim it back until you have paid for the hotel and then takes a further 5working days to clear (So you may be left out of pocket..) for example our stay is £216, we got charged 275 as a deposit! We have to pay our 216 on leave and not get out 275 back until our payment has cleared... very long winded!..

On a brighter note it is nice and clean with a comfy bed! :)

User

Afternoon tea after a SEE Southampton walking tour.

Excellent and appetising selection but we had to wait 15 minutes for the food to arrive.

Staff not very pro active and we had to ask for extra tea, milk etc.

The dining room had a collection of suitcases that would have been better stored out of sight.

Reception very busy with guests checking in etc.

Spoilt some of the ambiance.

Hotel central location.

Historic building.

Site of Jane Austin’s 18 th birthday.

Free WiFi.

User

The shower was cold. Breakfast terrible. 25 minute for them to prepare 2 poached eggs as I was told. Sausages were burnt. Asked waitress to take them away and bring fresh one. Brought me some fresh sausages but left the burnt ones for other guests. Staff had no idea about clearing the restaurant for incoming guests. Worst thing is you have to pay £9 for breakfast on top of your £120 room. Luckily I got a discount

User

So disappointed with this hotel.

Where do I start: room 114 was grubby, white bedding stained, carpets stains by bathroom, paintwork was all chipped everywhere. Double bed was 2 singles very badly joined, mattress was very sunk on the left side. Windows were filthy, wouldn't lock as lock broken. Bathroom was dirty, dust on top of the towels, all woodwork chipped, bath was chipped in multiple places. The silicon around the bath handles looked as though a 3 year old had done it, unsightly and dirty. The toilet was also stained. Needed bleach.

On th plus side the breakfast was excellen and the staff were friendly. I gave feedback to the receptionist who did apologise but I'm afraid it just doesn't make up for this awful experience. They should have refunded me the money paid for the room. I shall be writing a letter to Head Office, with some photographic evidence.

I didn't believe the reviews I'd read but they were actually quite accurate.

I love Accor Hotels usually but this one is shockingly bad.

User

Needs serious work doing - paint peeling off in bathroom, grouting missing in places and window which wouldn’t shut... Unhelpful and very unfriendly lady on reception said she would send someone up to close window and bring some complementary water - obviously now we realised it was said just to move us on .... The hotel is dark and grubby - it needs a good overhauling and the lady in reception who had no name badge on (quite short, dark hair scrapped back into a ponytail, probably about 40yrs old) needs to go on a customer service course - definitely wouldn’t rate this hotel any more than a 2*

User

This has to be the worst hotel I’ve ever stayed in... seriously & trust me I’ve stayed in some sh#t holes.

From start to finish a grim experience all round & the only good part is that we are only staying for one night (unfortunately I was shafted for £130 for the privilege).

User

Room is tired and shabby very disappointed wasn't the cheapest option the tiniest wardrobe space a very narrow bed feel like you have been stuck in a cupboard a travelodge is far nicer option than this when asked if we could go into a different room reception Staff just shrugged shoulder and said all rooms are the same

Very disappointing will not be staying here have stayed in other Mercure hotels and have been great feel let down

Having stayed at mercure Manchester and had a great experience we then tried mercure Liverpool which was disappointing. We gave you a final chance and booked Southampton. We won't be booking again. Our room was tiny with hardly any sockets and very dated. Walls were stained with spilt drinks and our room being on the ground floor was next to the alley where it seems people gather after a nights drinking to chat LOUDLY. Cooked breakfast wasnt good at all. very disappointed for £130 per day. The weather was warm which was the only reason we didn't go home early. Sorry guys but you did ask

User

Disastrous last minute choice. Our room had many faults: bathroom light blown, noisy extractor fan, water leaking from basin and shower screen onto bathroom floor, cleverly hidden light switches on wall lights by the bed.

In addition, the hotel was difficult to find and also the car park. This morning starting at about 4am was an intermittent sound like a bird scarer every 15 minutes or so. The decor was very dated. The hotel needs a complete make-over. Security poor - the lift (which was clearly needing maintenance) was an easy way for criminals to access and walk around the upper floors.

Definitely not up to the standard we expect at the price we were charged and does not do Accor's reputation any favours. We would not stay here again.

No air conditioning in our room (on a very stuffy night). Winter tog rated duvet on the bed.

Plus points: nice staff
