Millom “A” vs Ulverston “A
“Millom prove too strong for Ulverston” Millom 44 – 10 Ulverston
... It was a good day at the office on Friday night for Millom’s “A” team as they cruised to a comfortable victory over Ulverston in a match which showed off plenty of the club’s young talent. It was a nervy start to the game from both sides and it was the visitors who took advantage early on when their No6 broke over from close range to score. He could not convert the try but his side had a 4-point lead. Millom hit back when on 13 minutes, 17-year-old home debutant Luke Coulson latched onto an Ethan Bickerdike kick to score in the corner. Macaulay Bowman couldn’t convert from the difficult positon and the scores were level at 4-4. The home side then went on to score 2 tries within a 5-minute spell with Robbie Pattinson and Joe Moyes scoring from close range to extend the lead. Bowman converted one of the two attempts at goal to give Millom a 14 – 4 advantage with 25 minutes played. Back came Ulverston however, and it was their No6 doing the damage again when he burst over from 20 yards out to score. This time he could convert and Millom’s lead had been cut back. As the game edged towards half-time, it was Millom who had the last say before the break when Dylan Sykes scored twice from close range within the space of 3 minutes. Bowman converted both and the home side went in at the break leading 26 – 10. The rain began to fall much heavier at the start of the second-half and as a result the play became much tighter and more of a battle of the forwards with errors creeping into the game from both sides. Millom opened the scoring in the second-half when Luke Coulson went over for his second try of the game. Bowman converted. They were in again soon later when 16-year-old Jack Newbegin on his open age debut, sent three defenders with a delightful dummy and step to break clear and score. Bowman converted from in front of the sticks to make it Millom 38 – 10 Ulverston. The game then became very scrappy filled with errors and it took until the 70th minute for us to get the next score which would ultimately be the last score as well. Tom Newbegin, who was playing his first game back in rugby after an 18-month break from the sport got over from close range to make sure he wasn’t out done by his brother on the night! Bowman converted and the final score was Millom 44 – 10 Ulverston. Man of the match went to Luke Coulson who got over for a brace on his first home start for the “Woolybacks”.

Millom v Woolston Rovers Saturday 27/04/19 “Millom fall short as Woolston win again” Millom 18 – 30 Woolston Rovers Millom couldn’t build on their promising Barton Townley win against Dalton at the weekend, as they fell short against early promotion chasers in Woolston Rovers in a game which took 30 minutes to get a score on the board. ... The game began at a quick pace with both sides having to defend well in order to keep the other out. On 14 minutes Woolston did get themselves over the line, only for the brilliant Millom defence to come into play and get underneath the ball to hold the player up over the line. It was Woolston who did eventually get the first score of the game when Ben Dixon shot over from close range. Aaron Barber converted and gave his side what seemed to be a vital 6-point lead in what was looking like to be a small scoring game. This try however, woke Millom up and then responded with a try of their own just before half-time when Luke Brady made a 25-yard break to power over the line to score. Adam Kelly converted from in front of the sticks to make the half-time score Millom 6 – 6 Woolston Rovers. The second-half was much more of an open affair as the sun finally came out and both teams began to play more wider expansive rugby. And it was Woolston who benefitted off it when Ryan Brown pounced on a loose ball to dive over the line. Barber was left with a difficult conversion however and his kick slid wide of the posts to leave his side with a 4-point lead. The visitors were in again 2 minutes later when Justin Becker went over for the first of his 3 tries of the afternoon. Barber couldn’t convert again leaving Millom still within touching distance of the “Rovers”. Millom then responded through the returning Anthony Dixon on 56 minutes when the ex-international scored a brilliant solo try to get his side back into the match. Kelly converted and the lead was cut down to 2. Justin Becker then went over twice to complete his excellent hat-trick and round off his man of the match display and ultimately put an end to any hopes of a Millom come back. Barber managed to convert both of the scores and left Millom with the task of having to score a possible three tries in order for them to win the match. Millom would not lie down that easily and they responded once more when the home sides Man of the match in Hanley Dawson who is sponsored by The Beggars Theater continued his fine form this season to score. Kelly converted to offer Millom a slight hope that they could do what seemed the impossible. Woolston had the final say however right on the whistle when Ben Dixon darted over for his second score of the afternoon. Barber couldn’t convert but it didn’t matter because the final score was Millom 18 – 30 Woolston Rovers.
