Tim Farron Liberal Democrat calls for new deal to fix broken social care system at PMQs
Liberal Democrat MP Tim Farron used today’s Prime Minister’s Questions session to call for the establishment of a new cross-party group to bring forward a new deal to fix Britain’s social care system.
Speaking on the floor of the House of Commons, Tim said: “This logjammed and underworked Parliament could become one of the best if we chose to work across party to fix our broken social care... system.
“Through free votes, good will and hard work, we could design and then enact a new deal for social care that could give millions hope for the future.
“As one of her final acts as Prime Minister, will she commit to meet me and establish a cross party group so that we can bring this social care new deal to fruition?”
In response, Theresa May said that it was important that Britain’s social care system has a sustainable future and that she hopes that the Government will bring forward a social care green paper to Parliament soon which MPs of all parties would be able to contribute towards.
Speaking afterwards, Tim Farron said:
“My suggestion is that we use the Local Government Association’s green paper on social care which has already been put together by councillors from parties of all colours as a good place to start.
“What I want is for MPs to work together for a couple of months to design and bring forward a bill so this Parliament, which at the moment is so rightly derided, might actually do one of the best things that’s ever been done by any Parliament.”

Liberal Democrats table legislation to tackle air pollution crisis.
Today, for World Environment Day, Liberal Democrat Climate Change spokesperson Wera Hobhouse is tabling a bill to give local authorities more powers to issue fines to idling vehicles.
The Bill will increase penalties for stationary vehicle idling offences, as well as increasing fines for those who repeatedly offend.
... World Environment Day is the United Nations day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action to protect our environment. This year the focus is on tackling air pollution.
Speaking ahead of tabling her bill, Wera Hobhouse said: "For far too long this Conservative Government has failed to take air pollution seriously. They have lost numerous court cases over their inability to tackle the toxic fumes that Britain breathes every day. Liberal Democrats demand better.
"This is a major crisis, with emissions from vehicles responsible for a myriad of health problems, many terminal. Research shows that 800,000 people die every year across Europe due to air pollution.
"Yet the Conservative Government do nothing. "The legislation that I have tabled is crucial step in tackling our air pollution crisis. It will allow local authorities to clamp down on idling without the need to apply to the Government first, and it will enable them to increase fines on repeat offenders.
"We must do more to tackle both the climate emergency and the air pollution crisis. The Tories must stop wilfully ignoring the problem and back my Bill."

Trump puts NHS on the table in US trade talks
Responding to comments made by Donald Trump at a news conference with the Prime Minister, Liberal Democrat Brexit Spokesperson Tom Brake said:
“Donald Trump has made it clear that in any post Brexit trade negotiations everything, including the NHS ‘will be on the table’.
... “This is quite simply a disgrace. Millions of people will be shocked and angry at the suggestion of selling off access to our NHS in return for the opportunity for Donald Trump to fill our shelves with chlorinated chicken.
