Very entertaining friendly staff would definitely go again

User

Great night at the rum festival, our first time we've been to the guildhall and had a good evening, yummy rum and really friendly people, just everybody enjoying the bands music and atmosphere, we're coming to the gin festival next week. πŸ‘πŸ»

User

We visited for our daughters' graduation ceremony so this beautiful old hall was packed.

The seating was comfortable and the view from the upper tiered seating was good.

Staff all seemed friendly.

However, all those people did cause the temperature to rise considerably, opening a few of the many exit doors' would have helped circulate the air & made everyone feel less uncomfortable πŸ‘

User

It is a handy place- holds enough people standing for a comfortable gig - with a small balcony area

Would recommend the balcony as it faces the stage straight on and is brill

Only downfall- it is not acoustically sound- have been to far better places- take some sylicone earplugs - a must have item.

User

A reasonable venue, size wise not too bad, like a smaller brixton. Upstairs bit quite small but not too far away. Standing view we had was OK. Drinks we had cans and small wine bottles, not the worst prices but cmon a draught beer ain't hard to sort.

Tom Chaplin was good though, nice bit of crowd engagement with no problems hearing.

I would come back to Southampton for a gig.

User

What's the point of the O2 priority queue when they opened all the doors at the same time and then shouted to the crowd that there was another door where no one was queuing, so the priority customers ended up at the back of the queue!! The entry system definitely needs reviewing as does the staff telling the crowds to ensure they look after their property, surely that's just common sense!!

Nice venue but seriously needs some money spent on it and either get rid of the disgusting beer and dirt stained carpet or get it professionally cleaned. This could be a fabulous venue if only it was brought up to date.

User

We went for the Imelda May concert and were greeted by a young guy who pointed us to where our seats were...unfortunately he sent us to the wrong seats and it caused aggravation as when the people who were supposed to sit there turned up it was in the middle of the support act... to further spoil our experience with the guildhall was to be charged Β£3! For a small glass of lemonade, I know the prices will be a bit higher than normal but come on... it worked out more expensive than the beer! Why do this for an extra few pounds and leave people with a bad feeling. It was draught and costs you only pence, you could afford to give it away with a beer just to support the drivers.

User

The guildhall is just about the only place you will see an act of any popular culture significance, Southampton should have some thing better, i'm not saying its terrible but it could be better. The rose bowl is bad to get in and out, the Mayflower is very good for more theatrical shows, and St Marys again doesn't lend its self. The alternative is London? When a big ship comes to town what do they do they do with themselves, shop? I would like to see some bigger acts nearer to central southern England.

User

Staff were friendly even when confiscating my perfume for the duration of the gig as it was a glass bottle(first time that's ever happened anywhere). Feeder were absolutely fabulous and the venue itself is ok although in need if some tlc. Sizewise it's just right, not intimate but not too big. I didn't think the acoustics were bad but then I was right at the front. Carpet is never a great idea when drinks are allowed in the hall..quite sticky.

User

Sound not as bad as on previous visits but it's been a few years. All Time Low and Waterparks sounded great, SWMRS sounded awful but don't know if that was just then being poor or the Guildhall sound. Good size venue, like the free water but Β£4.50 for bottled beer (and no draft) - come on, that's just theft!

User

It's a posh-looking shed with loos and a bar. Carpet inside is disgusting and the area around the posh shed has all the atmosphere of an airport, without the planes to look at/get on.

That said it's a far better venue to see a decent band than an all-seater auditorium. Tom Chaplin was great. I expect the acoustics are rubbish, but Mr C turned the volume up so I didn't really care.

User

It was alright, quite a bit of echo in there, although to be fair it's a big hall. Little bit shabby around the edges, paint flaking off here and there. Bar staff were pleasant but the drinks prices are expensive, Β£9.60 for 2 cans with plastic cups and I had to open it myself! Toilets were stinking, they need a good clean. Cloakroom guy was very nice and friendly and cloakroom was reasonably priced.

User

I felt a bit disappointed turning up to the Rum Festival. At least being with my friends made up for it! The sound quality of the music on the stage was atrocious. Their voices were distorted by the overbearing sound of the music which was a real shame. I feel there could have been more decorations up, maybe a Limbo game or a photo booth even. A makeshift pirate ship with a plank? Only crisps and peanuts on offer for a snack and at Β£1.50!

Couldn't even just have a sample of Rum, you had to buy the drink! The venue is ok if looking a bit tired but generally clean.

User

Feels very dated & wasn't the cleanest of venues. On arrival the checks are a bit inconsistent. I had a bottle of water confiscated (fair enough) but also a packet of Polo's!!!! Purely because they were on view in the top of my handbag. Other people took food & sweets in because theirs weren't visible. You are able to claim items back as they operate a ticket system.

User

Venue was spot on. The rum festival could have, should have been much better organised from the layout of the bars, seating and food.... oops sorry there was no food. The local community could have stepped up to support the event. Shame next time get me involved I'll approach the appropriate locals and wip up a feast along with bands.

User

Wonderful show by the Inspiration Choir and Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.

The building is lovely but is a bit tired. The bar staff were noisy after the interval and their chatter and laughter could be heard during the performance. Outside was quite horrible with beggars bothering visitors and skateboards rocketing across Guildhall Square so that attendees of the show had to negotiate their antics.

Parking is tricky and you have to pay up until midnight. Then the wonderful Southampton City Council issued me with a Β£50 fine because I hadn't parked correctly.

I enjoyed the show but don't think I will go back again. A rather unwelcoming experience.

User

Went to see George Michael's Faith concert, it was ok. would not spend that much money again & certainly woud never visit the guildhall again, we tried to get a drink but the bar staff stood there talking saying the bar is shut till interval ? Then 300 people come in & you cant get served, who ever decides when you can buy a drink? What a stupid rule. I shall NEVER visit there again.

User

Nice venue, ok sound, but the poorest queuing system I've ever been in for such a small venue. The O2 priority entrance is pointless. The regular queue gets let in at exactly the same time and even had less people in it. You're actually better off in the normal line.

Also, one particular staff member was a bit overzealous with all the health and safety instructions. I really do not need to be told to keep my wallet and belongings in my pocket. I had no intention of swinging it around in a crowd of people so does this really need to be explained to everyone? I'm also not interested in having any sort of chit chat as I just want to get in to the venue. Scan my ticket, frisk me if needed, then let me in. I was not the only person to be wound up be this woman.

I'd love to say that this was a one off experience but I've visited 3 times in the past month and each time has been the same.

User

Have known and visited the Guildhall for over 50yrs. In the late 50's it was considered a great concert hall with many a recording being made there of symphony orchestras. Now really shabby and way off the mark for a music venue. The acoustics are poor by any standards and seating old and uncomfortable. Isn't it about time we had some major investment in this great building to bring it up to modern standards? O2 must make a load of money as an organisation, so come on get this place into shape for all the city to enjoy!
