About Old Sarum

A Norman castle built within an Iron Age hill fort. Steeped in history and with beautiful views of the surrounding Wiltshire countryside.

Old Sarum Description

Discover the story of the original Salisbury and take the family for a day out to Old Sarum, 2 miles north of where the city stands now. The mighty Iron Age hill fort was where the first cathedral once stood and the Romans, Normans and Saxons have all left their mark.

Today, 5, 000 years of history are told through graphic interpretation panels on site. Families, heritage lovers and walkers can enjoy a great value day out at Old Sarum - you could even bring a picnic and enjoy the fantastic views across the Wiltshire countryside. The gift shop has a delicious range of ice-creams and exclusive English Heritage gifts and produce. Wooden bows and arrows are also on sale to help the kids imagine what life was like all those years ago!

Don't miss:

There’s nothing quite like going for a walk on a crisp winter day. Why not wrap up warm and bring your dog along to Old Sarum for a stroll? http://bit.ly/2r0oVYe

This Sunday at 7pm we will be lighting a beacon at Old Sarum. The Beacon will symbolise the 'light of hope' that emerged from the darkness of war. Whilst the flame burns we shall read the names of all those from Salisbury who died. This is not an event but if people did want to see the beacon you should be able to view it from the original cathedral site on the outer bailey. The car park will be open but please be aware there is little lighting and you will need a torch and sturdy shoes if you wish to attend.

Thanks to Jeff Welch for this fabulous picture of the sky at Old Sarum last week. As the nights draw in, please be aware that the castle and car park are still open daily but now close at 4pm.

A lovely day now the sun has come out. Here are some perhaps more cute rather than scary pinecone bats made on site today.

Watching the mist lifting off Salisbury at the start of another beautiful day at Old Sarum.

User

Nothing like a colourful line of Hawke's automobiles in the car park to cheer up a dreary day at Old Sarum.

User

Opened early today to allow Alex Langlands and Rick Edwards the chance to film Old Sarum for an upcoming documentary on the History Channel. In Alex's words Sarum is a national treasure that more people should know about. We like Alex.

When I was young, I lived in Wiltshire, passed Old Sarum many times, but had never visited! Fast forward 60 years and living in USA, we visited this historic site,on a visit to the area where I grew up and both my husand and I were amazed at what we discovered, it was very interesting, and the views of surrounding area, were fabulous. Very well worth an afternoon strolling around Old Sarum.🇬🇧❤️

User

We lov to go there for dog walking .It is a great place the view is amazing all around ,

We live in Salisbury so are lucky to have this on our door stop .

User

We had lots of Halloween fun this afternoon - spooky stories, making dream catchers, a run around finding the pumpkins. And we can't come to old Sarum without rolling down the slope :)

User

The castle doesn't take long to look around - I did it in about 40/45 minutes but the walk up there is glorious and the views are stunning. I spent hours just rambling around, and there are plenty of sun traps to read in. One o my favourite places!

User

My relative, Robert Renfro ( Reynfreu) was a prisoner in the Castle of old Sarum in the years 1304 to 1307. I'm so curious to know why, and what happened to him after.....

User

Lovely walk and great views! Been a few times now and enjoy it every time! Haven't gone into the main castle though! Maybe will do next time! Only down fall was the amount of dog mess around!

User

Incredible, if only we could time travel

User

I went for a day of jousting, with falconry, jesters, juggling and medieval music. The views are fantastic, and we were very lucky to have perfect weather.

I'll give it 5 as it's such a wonderful place to go to, that's despite a rather rude and grumpy parking attendant, but I'd probably be grumpy after day in the heat guiding cars around!

User

Great; I'm in awe of the history , the view of constables' Salisbury and I walk my dog recently in this dog friendly community in respect of all users of this national gem

User

Great place to go. My son did the Easter challenge which made the morning a bit longer walked round the old Bailey with our dog is beauiful. Had a picnic roughly time scale 2/3 hours there. Salisbury View are amazing you can see the people jump from planes which is close by. Great morning out. Thank you

User

First time there yesterday & I fell in love with place. Just great surroundings & views & love learning about the history.Lots of people with their dogs running around which was lovely to see. People paragliding above, just a lovely atmosphere. Can't wait to go again

User

Fab Day with my family at clash of the Romans today. So much to do and see and everyone was so friendly. Thank you

User

We enjoyed exploring the castle and cathedral remains, whilst enjoying the views over Salisbury. It was a bit windy up there, but would love to return on a Summers day with a picnic.

User

Loved the historicity of the place. It was tranquil and peaceful even though there were a fair few people around. I went around the site barefoot and the Earthing experience was...

User

I loved Old Sarum. It's a great place for walking and exploring first hand. People don't understand what's so pretty about it, but when you walk from top to bottom (after the wind has been knocked out of you) it's worth the climb.

There's a nice walk from Stonehenge to Woodhenge. We got the bus from there to Old Sarum then spent the next day back there and explored Salisbury Cathedral.

User

Great show for the jousting event shame about the toilets very dirty lack off toilet paper and that was at 11-15 am food was a let down questions for ages at the pork place then gave up otherwise very good day 😊🎉

User

Great event and location, but disappointed with the facilites on the day (grand joust). Only food was hog roast, no alternatives for vegetarians.

User

From California, really enjoyed it. Maybe a small food stand would improve the experience but there is the "Harvest" across the street a short ways so food really wasn't a problem for us. Great place for photography, fresh air and learning experience.

User

Excellent event, Romans were awesome and My Son and I had a great time.

Only negative was the entire top car park was closed for disabled use only, seemed excessive only half the spots were used. Carried my son up the hill, which other people might not have managed.
