Garden design, maintenance and construction

Plantaholix Description

My name is Chris Birt and I started doing this in 2005 when I decided I'd had enough of the computer industry. I've seen a lot of gardens since then - good and bad although most of them were better after I'd been there. I'll happily travel anywhere for design work and have been as far away as Paris!
I've designed all kinds of gardens for people. Most want a "cottage" or at least "cottagey" garden but they also want it to be low maintenance. Unfortunately, the two don't really go hand in hand. There are ways and means however, and everyone generally ends up happy.
One thing I really enjoy is transforming bits of gardens that customers believe they can't do anything with like the shady bits, the damp bits and the bits under trees. There have been a few customers that have later told me that these have become their favourite bits!
I also like foliage. Everyone loves flowers but, on the whole, they are not around for long. The leaves are, however, and I place a lot of importance on how the garden will look when there are no flowers around. . . even in the depths of winter. A strong basic design is key to this and experience has taught me that a good design looks good before any plants go in.
If I can be said to have a speciality, it's tropical style gardens and woodland gardens.
Anyway, I hope to post on here the odd photo of some of the work I do along with the odd musing or rant!
