Positive Response Training & Consultancy provides evidence-based solutions to the prevention and management of complex challenging behaviours in people with learning disabilities, autism, acquired brain injury and dementia.

Positive Behavioural Support
Research evidence shows that the most effective interventions for supporting people with challenging behaviour are derived from Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA). Positive Behavioural Support (PBS) combines the technological toolkit of ABA with the values base of the five service accomplishments and delivers support within individualised, person-centred frameworks. The values underpinning PBS are entirely congruent with those within national policy and frameworks for people with intellectual disability.
We have a suite of PBS training which provides a whole organisation approach to embedding PBS in practice across all levels of staffing. The training is based on a graduated model. Each module builds on the content and learning of the preceding modules.
The training has a focus on learning disability services but we also have a forensic and mental health version to enable services in these areas to put PBS into practice. In the recent publication “A Positive and Proactive Workforce” (Department of Health, Skills for Health and Skills for Care, 2015) PBS is recommended as a model for other client groups and our inclusion of an adapted version will enable service providers to respond to this challenge.

Positive Behaviour Management Plus
PBMplus is our non-aversive tried and tested BILD accredited training programme and one of the very few UK or international reactive strategy training approaches to have any supporting peer review research into its effectiveness. It complements the PBS training by providing more in-depth training on secondary prevention and then focusing on ethical and safe approaches to non-preventable challenging behaviours. The physical intervention component focuses on the use of personal space, breakaway moves and a limited number of restraint procedures, should they be required, all supported by underpinning knowledge and values stemming from evidence-based practice and empirical research. None of our procedures uses pain to achieve compliance and known high-risk holds are avoided.
