Sarah Mccaig Designs Description
My current work has evolved from a long-standing love of stitched and woven textiles and the experience of dress design and construction. My designs use a unique variety of pure British wools. I include natural and hand-dyed Herdwick, Swaledale and Blue-Faced Leicester wools from sheep bred in Cumbria, to colourful Scottish tartan and the beautiful Harris Tweed, and intricate handwoven fabrics. I enjoy using a range of techniques in my work and incorporate different combinations of materials and embellishments to achieve the desired pattern and texture.
My textile product range includes stitched, handwoven and crocheted cushions, doorstops, draught excluders and an assortment of scented products, together with woven and crocheted scarves and corsages. In 2013, the range of my designs was enhanced by the addition of handcrafted candles, a venture with my Father, to create candles to compliment and co-ordinate with the textile pieces. Colour, shape and texture play an important part of these intriguing designs.
The inspiration for my textile home and fashion accessories is driven by the desire to work with beautiful, natural fibre materials, such as wool and silk, and to find an exciting way to work with them. I am inspired by many sources, from the natural colours and textures of the Cumbrian landscape to ancient decorative geometric lines and shape.
The vast majority of my products are one-offs and cannot be replicated. Some designs are available in small numbers subject to material availability, and pieces can be made-to-order.
There is no compromise on design and quality, and all products are individually hand crafted and skilfully made in Cumbria.
