"Never has the work of Rangers been more important and necessary than it is today" - Dr. Jane Goodall
The International Ranger Federation defines a ranger as a person involved in the “practical protection and preservation of all aspects of wild areas, historical and cultural sites.”
They are the unsung heroes who devote their lives to the conservation of our most precious species and landscapes, and it's through their sacrifice, courage and commitment that we can travel to s...ome of the world's most remote and dangerous environments. World Ranger Day provides an opportunity to celebrate their achievements and encourages us to remember those who have lost their lives or been injured in the line of duty.
At Secret Compass, we are proud to work directly with these organisations. By building close relationships with select teams of locals, we know exactly where our money goes and can continue to support, sustain and track the important progress they are making, in often challenging circumstances.
Happy #worldrangerday to all our friends and colleagues around the world!

Massive welcome home to our 2019 DRC: Virunga expedition team!
It was definitely a wet one this time round, but whilst they've been drying off and settling back into post expedition routine, our team have been busy sending us through some of their favourite snaps.
We've been enjoying trawling through the 100's of great images, so thought we'd share a quick sneak peak of some highlights from one of our leaders, Jan.
... Keep your eyes on our social media channels in the coming weeks for more photo montages, expedition diaries and video clips from this year's team!

“By breaking down the barriers that divide us we can help paint different people as one humanity.”
Travelling with a bike is often the key to unlocking so many doors - the bike breaks down barriers that language and customs so often fail to, usually because the bike is such a universally identifiable thing, albeit in terms of transportation rather than as a sport. When you turn up on a bike, men gather to calculate the gearing, and kids want to try out the bike. It creates a buzz that isn’t easily created in other ways and that puts people at ease. Laughter is guaranteed.

Last year, Animal Planet and scientist Mark Evans embarked on this epic expedition into the Bhutanese Himalayas.
Supported by Secret Compass and armed with cutting-edge DNA science, the team's mission was to see if genetics could finally solve the mystery of the yeti.
With mysterious footprints, monstrous stories and medical disaster... did they finally find the lair or was this perilous journey into the land of gods and monsters a step too far?

Exploring comfort zones to discover wild places and disconnecting from the realities of everyday, with clarity of mind and unrivalled freedom we tap back in to the world around us. In these moments, we’re 100% present, and at the end of the day isn’t that what life is all about?
Our lives are full of insignificant worries and squandered opportunity so we owe it to ourselves to at the very least make the most of our time and embrace something greater than our daily routine.
...When all is said and done, what are you more likely to regret, time spent outdoors or time behind a screen?

Deserts are tough places. They’re hot and windy and sand gets in everything. Things take a beating, mostly feet. But they also have a compelling beauty; the vastness, the sparsity of people and the heightened sense of being something so insignificant in the midst of something so vast, all combine to create an environment like nothing else. As Wilfred Thesiger says in Arabian Sands:
“…for this cruel land can cast a spell which no temperate clime can match.”
