Segedunum Roman Fort & Museum

About Segedunum Roman Fort & Museum

Where Rome's great frontier begins. Museum preserving the remains of Segedunum - 'strong fort' - at the eastern end of Hadrian's Wall, overseen by a 35m viewing tower. Gift shop and Cafe.

Segedunum Roman Fort & Museum Description

Marking the eastern end of Hadrian’s Wall at Wallsend, Segedunum Roman Fort & Museum is one of the most fully excavated fort sites anywhere in the Roman Empire. Once home to 600 Roman soldiers who guarded the frontier against barbarian attack for almost 300 years, the site features the remains of the original Roman fort, an interactive museum, and full-scale reconstructions of a bath house (currently externally viewed only) and a section of Wall. The 35 metre high viewing tower provides outstanding views across this UNESCO World Heritage Site and the River Tyne, in a place of great historical significance, both ancient and contemporary.

Happy Birthday to the man himself - Emperor Hadrian was born #onthisday in AD76, 1,943 years ago. This bust of him in our Empire & Frontier gallery is a replica of one in the British Museum.

2019's summer exhibition takes a different view of life on Hadrian's Wall. Borderline Funny features cartoons from the 19th to the 21st century, including some originally produced for Punch and the Illustrated London Evening News, and the late Roger Oram, a well known north east archaeologist and artist. We close for the festive season on Saturday 1 December and re open Monday 21 January 2019. Here's a wintry picture of the fort in snow from earlier this year.

We spent a very interesting and worthwhile afternoon at Segedunum.

Great to be able to appreciate the layout of the site from the tower. Friendly helpful staff and all capped off by a delicious cream tea in the cafe. P.S. Love the way Nexus have used Latin for directions etc. at the nearby Metro station.

User

Walked the whole of Hadrans Wall last year and Segedunum Roman Fort was the last stop. The little cafe served a lovely full English breakfast and the staff were very helpful. The viewing platform was a nice place to sit and reflect on my 84 mile hike.

User

Very interesting, my daughter aged 11 loved it plenty of hands on thing to do, build an arch, build a bridge view from tower was amazing.

User

Spend hours here yesterday with useful vision. Staff very good with the kids. They Really enjoyed the activities and the dressing up. Will be back again in the school holiday

Second time we've been today and just as great as the first. Malcolm, Elizabeth, the reception man and all of the other staff were just fantastic wih my daughters. Really hands on with the crafting, engaging and warm. If you haven't been before I recommend! Thanks everyone xx

User

Loved it. Went on a craft day and the ladies and gentlemen we're outstanding helping the girls create their masterpieces with patience and good humour. We will definitely be back!

Invited recently to help out with trialling a new interactive programme for the kids. My 7-year-olds had a ball! Staff, cafe and 'friends' of the museum were warm, friendly and helpful. As it's right in our back garden, I'm getting the season ticket for our family. Looking forward to exploring during the summer on our bikes!

I was just walking past yesterday as I do often on my way home... have visited a couple of times though and always find it amazing. Even just passing whether on the cycle path behind or on my way to the Metro I always slow my pace down a little and take it all in.

User

Great start (or end) to the wall. The museum, viewing platform, site and wall section was a good introduction to Hadrians Wall for two small boys.

User

Great museum with very friendly and helpful staff, well worth a visit.

User

Excellent facility, museum, and staff. Could not have started my hike nearly as well with out this visit. Immersive, informative, and engaging.

User

Enjoyed the Market Day and the Combat Display. Really liked that there was lots of Hands On activity.

Keep it up! We will definitely be back for more!

User

Amazing day had by my staff and nursery kids staff were so helpful it was unreal the place is fantastic loads for kids to do n good easy access for pushchairs n buggy good cafe also we will be back. Carols Kidz care

User

Some money has been thrown at this - a shame the staff haven't been sent to the charm school, in an area where there is a great deal to it

User

Staff were friendly and the cafe was nice. Not everything was at the museum itself. Museum is quite small and the end of the wall was quite disappointing. There seems to be a lot of activities for children though!

User

It's alright for a day out. Not everything is at the museum it's self. We were done after 45 minutes. It closed at 2:30, we arrives at 1:40. So i suppose it was right timing for us. Staff are lovely and friendly though! But I thought with it being the school holidays it would be open later!

User

Came across Segedunum yesterday whilst looking for somewhere to take photos of old Hebburn on south side of Tyne as part of family genealogy search. The observation tower was fantastic and we could see the Red Arrows at Sunderland air show performing in the distance!! We found the museum very interesting even though the cafe wasn't open but was definitely worth the visit.

User

Cafe and shop are good and the staff are friendly but not a lot to see otherwise. A bit boring compared to other Roman site's and the end part of the wall was full of Rubbish and dog poo, sad really. Nice food in the cafe and fantastic views from the tower. Worth seeing but wouldn't go twice. It's a good place to start a walk or bike ride along the old railway track but again it's full of Rubbish and dog poo.

User

Once again a poor event. Hardly no stalls, bath house closed and little to do.
