We are often asked about the history of this boat situated at the top of the Charlestown harbour. ⚓️

With all of the recent excitement of a certain famous show being filmed in the Charlestown harbour, within the museum are a few items from another famous movie... can you identify the movie?

As bells ring across the country to signal the start of a new school year, one bell remains silent... the Charlestown bell.
The Charlestown bell was situated at the weigh bridge and was used to alert the Estate workers to open the gates of the harbour when ships were entering and leaving the Historic Port of Charlestown.
The bell last rang in approximately 1938, at the beginning of Second World War. It had been lost over the years and was only recently discovered in the Old Mill House at the top of Charlestown Road.

A look back in time... This classic image of Charlestown Harbour was taken in the early 1900’s.

On this day... in 1545 the Mary Rose capsized and sank with the loss of an estimated 400-500 lives.
The Mary Rose was originally built in 1509 and was the flagship of the English Tudor Navy. She was refitted in 1536 with an additional gun deck allowing for a more powerful broadside, making her the most advanced warship of its kind. The Mary Rose capsized in the Solent, a mile and a half from Portsmouth harbour, while leading an attack against a French invading fleet.
Rediscov...ered in 1971 and raised in 1982, Mary Rose artefacts have given incredible insight into the everyday lives of those during Tudor times.
Visit the Shipwreck Centre today to view original items from the Mary Rose as well as artefacts from over 150 other shipwrecks.

On this day... in 1743 the DIC Hollandia, while on her maiden voyage, ran aground on Gunner’s Rock, Scilly Isles and sank with chests of bullion worth 129,700 guilders. The entire crew of 276 and an unknown number of passengers all lost their lives in this tragic event.

Visited Charlestown and the centre on Thursday (15th) and really enjoyed whole experience. Wasn't expecting it to take two hours to get through the whole museum such is the depth of detail - other reviewers need to realise there is more to Charlestown than Poldark. Thank you to all for such a good exhibition.

An amazing amount of information about Cornwall and it's shipping. Really enjoyed it.

User

A great place with lots of interesting items, if you are into shipwrecks, you could spend a lot of time looking at the recovered artefacts. With the new owners having many plans for the future, it will be a place to watch and re-visit.

User

Car park had plenty of spaces. The display was extremely big and it took about an hour to circulate around it. Nice rainy day activity.

User

I have been there before the new owners and it was very good then. but now it has new owners 2 thirds of the exhibits have gone and not much left to see just another money making tourist attraction with not much to offer now

User

The shipwreck and heritage centre has not got a "poldark experience" as advertised in 'Best days out cornwall' I was a little disappointed! I would advise going for a free walk around the harbour.
