Southampton City Art Gallery Description

The Southampton City Art Gallery is an art gallery in Southampton, southern England. It is located in the Civic Centre on Commercial Road.

The gallery's art collection covers six centuries of European art history, with over 5, 300 works. It is housed in an example of 1930s municipal architecture. The gallery holds a Designated Collection, considered of national importance.

Highlights of the permanent collection include a 14th-century altarpiece by Allegretto Nuzi, of the Italian Giambattista Pittoni; the Perseus series by Burne-Jones; paintings by the Camden Town Group and The London Group; sculpture by Jacob Epstein, Auguste Rodin, Edgar Degas, Henri Gaudier Brzeska, Richard Deacon and Tony Cragg; and Richard Long photographs.

Thousands of visitors explore the exhibitions and displays every month and, through a programme of educational activities, Southampton City Art Gallery provides opportunities for greater access, involvement and understanding of art for people of all ages.

visited today with my 4 year old and my friend and her 3 year old. we had a great time was nice to be welcomed into a place like this with young children and not have to worry too much about them touching things they shouldnt because the do touch trail kept them amused the whole way round! great idea!

User

We loved it! Took the toddler (2 and a half)... the interactive areas for kids were incredible. It kept him amused while I actually got time to really take everything in. Every gallery (and museum etc) should aspire to being so wonderfully family friendly! Thanks guys!

User

This is well worth the effort of visiting! More people should take time to see what it has to offer! It would be awful to lose it!

User

The Please DO Touch Trail is excellent. We'll definitely be going back.

User

Escorted a large group of 8/9 year old children and throughly enjoyed the experience. Staff were extremely knowledgeable in the field of all art work. The gallery itself it beautiful and clean and very easy to enjoy. Very impressed.

User

Attended the South Indian Traditional Dance Shoe with my family. Was not disappointed...

Bringing stories to life through dance and music.

Amazing costumes. Amazing teaching about the history and culture...

Will definitely return for more shows and workshops...

Highly recommended... :-)

As an artist I find this gallery a constant source of inspiration with the added bonus of it's free to enter! I loved the Louise Bourgeois exhibition from Artists Rooms, of course the JHG now open means more fantastic contemporary art within Southampton, the more the merrier as far as I am concerned, but it cannot replace our very own city gallery where we the people own the world class art! The two galleries compliment each other.

More recently I went to the Roger Mayne and St. Ives: A Defining Moment exhibition, absolutely fantastic! I am looking forward to Pillars of Dawn by Kelly Richardson. My only complaint would be the opening times it is often difficult to visit when it closes so early.

User

A wonderful gallery, one of the very best in England, with a particularly fine early 20th century art collection.

User

A hidden gem- well not so hidden but a real quality collection with remarkably few visitors. So much better than fighting the crowds to see a well known "master" in a London gallery. Given all the cruise ships passing through I can't imagine why it doesn't get more visitors. For the lucky few who get to see it now - enjoy. It can't last!
